2014-2015 Medical College of Wisconsin Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
applying OOS too, but it looks like a great school.

idk if i should apply here or U of Wisconsin??!!

MCW is your better bet. University of Wisconsin interviews about 4% of OOS applicants.
I'm trying for both OOS... so frustrating because I live right by the Wisconsin border. Haha.

I'm applying here this cycle. I'm really excited about this school! Are there any current medical students willing to dish out some secondary/interview advice?

The secondary app in the past has been very quick, as in 20 minutes quick. As for the interview, they changed things up a bit this past year so an incoming M1 would be better at answering questions regarding it.

I'll be an M1 this fall at MCW, so if anyone has any questions regarding the application/interview process feel free to PM me. Also, just as CopaceticOne said, the secondary app is real quick and doesn't take much thought at all. Best of luck to all of you during this application process!

Applying here OOS! Good luck to every one!

I'll also be an M1 this fall. Again, feel free to ask any questions here or in PM. Just tag me. 🙂

Good luck everyone!

What sort of 'vibe' did you get from the school, city, students etc. on interview day?

The school and campus is beautiful. Walking up to the school is an amazing feeling. (You'll know what I mean when you interview!) Everything looks new. I also liked the feel of a medical campus where the hospitals and the school are in close proximity. Tosa itself is a quiet suburb that's just west of Milwaukee. The few students we met on interview day were all so nice and helpful. I didn't take the opportunity to stay with a student host but I'm sure you'd learn a lot from them. 🙂

Does the school really focus on primary care and emphasize staying in the region after graduation?

Anything notable on the secondary for those of us who haven't gotten one yet? 🙂

This nice long essay to write:

"The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) is dedicated to leadership and excellence in four distinct areas identified in our mission statement - Education,Research,Patient Care,Service. Choose one of these areas and discuss how you will contribute to our mission, both as a medical student and a practicing physician. (max: 3,000 characters)"

O no they added a essay 🙁. Its kind of a diversity essay though so I may just modify that with how my pharmacy background will contribute to education

Oh. I scanned the secondary and hadn't seen that yet. Whoops. Sorry about that. Thank you.

If you apply to the green bay campus, you will have 3 more essays... so 4 essays total.

Is the Greenbay campus pretty much only for state residents who are interested in primary care? Any oos people applying to this campus, or just staying with the Milwaukee one?

^^ I would appreciate some insight into this as well! Also, they only accept 25 students for Greenbay?

Thanks!

Conduct violators are required to submit a subsequent essay as well as note from dean. This will surely slow the app down

@gettheleadout, here are the prompts so you can edit the inaugural thread post:

Both Campuses:
The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) is dedicated to leadership and excellence in four distinct areas identified in our mission statement - Education,Research,Patient Care,Service. Choose one of these areas and discuss how you will contribute to our mission, both as a medical student and a practicing physician. (max: 3,000 characters)

GB Campus Only:
Describe your motivation for pursuing your medical school training in a community-based medical education program and how this will prepare you for your future career in medicine. Identify experiences in which you have lived or otherwise interfaced with rural or medical underserved communities and how they have influenced you.(max: 3000 characters)

Describe the community in which you envision yourself ultimately living and practicing medicine, addressing the benefits and challenges of life in that community.(max: 3000 characters)

Describe a time when you found a creative solution to a challenging or unfamilar situation and what you learned from the experience.(max: 3000 characters)

@Heplayer92 @mik30102 I believe (don't quote me on this) that the Green Bay campus is focusing on small town and rural care as opposed to traditional primary care, and I'd assume that it is rural Wisconsin or the UP that they are going to focus the curriculum on. So if you are an OOS student with no connection to rural health or Wisconsin in general, I think you would be a longshot to get into the program

So what happens if you apply to both greenbay and Milwaukee if you're OOS? is there any chance of getting into greenbay if you're OOS with no connections? I already did their essays.

Since some people didn't get a secondary (yet), do they screen for secondaries or just send it to everyone?

Since the photo is "optional", should we go to any lengths to get one and send it in?

From my experience photos are always good. I used to work for a doctor who always took photos of potential fellows/residents because she had a photographic memory and it helped her remember who was who. I suppose this will be more helpful when you actually get an interview and the adcom not having a photo of you on file may potentially hurt you.

Anybody know if the "advanced biology and lab" prerequisite refers to upper level bio? Would intro bio (with lab) and taking upper level bio (without lab) suffice? Thanks.

I have a LOR from my PI, who is nonscience faculty. I once completed an independent study course for credit with him. Would I classify this letter as professional, nonscience or work?

Thanks in advance for any replies! 🙂

Long time lurker, decided to finally participate now that my admission cycle has begun.

Just received secondary, applying OOS.
