2014-2015 New York University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yeah. That's what they told me on the phone last month.

Hmm interesting. I wonder how they issue acceptances then... Do they wait to reject till all applicants are interviewed? Not sure how it will work now that they added Jan. dates.

If anyone cares to shed some light on this --- what are the rough Lizzy Ms of people who have been accepted thus far (with Nov./Dec. acceptances) ? No worries if you don't want to share.

My hope is their next wave of acceptances will be for applicants with lower LizzyM/MCAT scores 😉 mine is 72-73, interviewed early September.

Accepted yesterday. Interviewed first week of November. 77-78.

LizzyM ~ 75, not accepted though. Hoping that that doesn't mean I bombed the MMI, especially since I heard that MMI performance is the best pre-matriculation predictor towards how well one performs on the STEP II (like how MCAT performances are the best predictors towards STEP I scores)

do we think the last of the IIs have all been sent after yesterday's tweet?

This might just be a rumor, but I've heard that with the MMI at NYU, they're able to score all the applicants based on how they answered the questions, generate a ranked list, and accept applicants based on rank. Does anyone know if that's true or not?

The MMI is definitely quantified. It was pretty obvious on the computers in the interview rooms that the interviewers had to fill out some type of Likert scale. No idea what the categories were though.

Baylor makes it clear that they rank applicants while other schools emphasize that they do not rank candidates!

Just started looking through this feed. I got offered an interview for NYU yesterday for Jan. 7th. Already been accepted to three places so no pressure but really excited to see the school!

Wow, I can't believe they sent out more IIs and into January too!!. I missed out again 🙁 Ah well.

But just out of curiosity how many days in January were available?

Congrats to all those with recent IIs and those accepted!

Accepted! Interviewed early October 🙂 Is anyone else thinking of applying to the 3 year MD pathway?

I'm thinking about applying to the 3 year pathway but I don't have a 40 mcat and I heard you need ultra high stats for that. I guess it wouldn't hurt to apply though.

I was also thinking of applying. In terms of cost-benefit, there is not much downsides to applying I guess

"We will be sending out more rounds of acceptances soon. Stay tuned!" on Twitter yesterday.... keeping the hope alive 🙂
Right with ya sunflower. Unfortunately based on last years threads its only acceptances until late January when the waitlists come out.

@godawg300 and @Juldarus, what specialities are you thinking of applying to?

I was thinking EM. That's the field I have the most experience in (of course, as a pre-med, that experience is admittedly small in the grand scheme of things) and I think NYU would be a fantastic place to do an EM residency.

The fact that the 3-year pathway is not binding is of course really important to me. I've heard most people change their choices half a dozen times or so!

@godawg300 and @Juldarus, what specialities are you thinking of applying to?

I was thinking ortho. I have 3 years of research in that area with pubs so that would make the most sense for me. On the flip side ortho is already super competitive so I'm not expecting to have much of a chance. I might just throw my hat in because it doesn't impact my acceptance to the 4 year program. The best part is that the program is non-binding so that's a huge plus for me.

It's good they're sending more acceptances (since, as I've said above, I've only heard silence despite what I felt was my best MMI), BUT I have mixed feelings about knowing that they're sending more. I guess last week when I knew the date acceptances were coming, I got my hopes up and was let down. Is it better to not know until good news comes your way?

That's a good point. I certainly don't like being in limbo with absolutely no idea of when to expect news, but you're right in that getting your hopes up and being anxious and nervous and obsessed with checking your email for an entire day is not terribly conducive either. I'm not sure what's best! I think I would rather know so I could brace myself for bad news/no news, since that's always my expectation.

+1 to everything

I think NYU indicating the precise day when emails could come out was the most stressful. Other schools indicate a day when everyone will get some status update (e.g. Pitt), and this offers more closure.

I agree -- I prefer it when schools release all decisions, whether positive or negative, on the same day. But if a school were to only release acceptances first, I'd rather know when those emails/calls/letters are going out. I appreciate knowing that I could possibly hear from NYU before the holidays, for example. One of my schools said that we would hear between December and April, and I'm not a huge fan of that vagueness.

But of course, schools will do what works best for them and what has proven effective in the past! Not much we can do about it unfortunately.

So I notice that NYU doesn't require any courses, only "recommends" them. I haven't taken genetics and am not planning on it, but it is recommended; should I add to my schedule now on the off chance I get admitted here? Or is it truly a recommendation only?

I contacted the admissions office earlier in the cycle about required coursework (I wanted to know what counts as an "English" course) and they assured me that it really is recommended. So you don't have to take genetics if you don't want to. Good luck!

I like that the girl who tweeted a response to that update from NYU has an unlocked profile and one of the latest posts is celebrating an acceptance to med school. Lol.

All I want for Christmas is an NYU acceptance 😍

I'd be pretty happy with a II at this point tbh.

I guess I should have sent them that personalized letter after all. Oh well.

CROSSING THOSE DAMN FINGERS!!!

Do they announce when they're sending e-mails or do they only tweet it that same day?

Last time (a few days ago) they had a tweet the morning-of saying "yo there's gonna be acceptances today" (that's a paraphrasing, despite quote marks). My prediction is that like Thursday (a week after their last round of acceptances) they'll do the same thing.

"Soon" was way too vague... I haven't done anything productive all week

Does anyone know when they go on break?

P.S. Thanks Bovary! I'd have linked/tagged your username, but I don't know how to do that in in my phone...

No problem. And no I don't know when they go on break (probably christmas eve like many other offices/businesses). And I guess today wasn't the day after all!

What do you guys think? More acceptances going out next week? Last year, post interview waitlists and rejections went out January 31, with all acceptances having gone out prior to that date. However, since interview season is extended into January this cycle, do you think that final decisions will come out a few weeks later to accommodate?

Good luck all! 🙂

URGENT REQUEST:
I was invited to interview at NYU on January 14th, but I am scheduled to be on a Habitat for Humanity mission in South Carolina on that day. There are currently no openings on any other day. Is there anyone interviewing on any day over the next two weeks that would be willing to switch with me? You'd make my life so much easier 🙂

I expect more invites to go out next week because of NYU's last tweet, but yes, the absolute final decisions would be released later... Either way, I expect they'll send another round of acceptances before the "final decisions" round. Or I hope, because I'll be checking my e-mail and SDN, anyway...

Ditto what marauderette says above me. Total tease on NYU's part with that tweet about acceptances coming "soon" (on what, the cosmic scale??), though I'd expect the coming couple weeks to see some action.

If I haven't heard anything yet, is it safe to say I am rejected? Or is there hope still?

Did they ever send out any acceptances after that Dec 12 tweet about sending out more? I was told on my interview day we'd hear by Jan 1... Still nothing. Anyone else in this boat?

They never sent any more acceptances. We're all on the edge of our seats now...
