2014-2015 New York University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Oh wow. They are already at November and interviews end mid-December anyways.

Congrats to all IIs! I was wonderin if any MSTPers got II? What were ur completion dates? Thanks

anybody know if NYU is receptive to update letters pre-interview? i have some pretty big updates (publication, and a few others). thanks!

Check out the physician scientist thread! It looks like there are a number of SDN folks who've gotten MSTP interviews so far.

Sure, 3.77/38, complete 8/1 (submitted secondary ~7/17, LOR processing delayed completion).

The email they sent this time around was identical. Here's the error email they sent following up the fake II email:

i was completed on 8/13 and got the same emails. similar stats. not sure how to feel...

I was wondering if someone could describe what the interview day itinerary is. Thanks!

Does anyone else have a designation of incomplete even after submitting all material and LOR? I am not interested in the 3 yr MD program, so this is the only item still marked incomplete. Anyone else have this problem?

Same here. I have checks on everything except the 3-yr MD since I never submitted that. You should be fine.

I did, contact them and they should fix it for you

So I got the diversity affairs invite to meet with a student. On the one hand, I would love to meet with someone. On the other hand, I feel like I have enough on my plate for one day. I just hope that they don't take the message that I'm not interested in diversity...

What did everyone else do? Is it some kind of unofficial requirement?

Note to self: The withdraw button at NYU is located right where you check completion. Don't click it by mistake because it doesn't ask you to confirm.

Time to email the admissions office...

I can almost guarantee it's not an unofficial requirement. You'll be fine. Many interviewees are flying in and out of town on tight schedules and can't make all the extras.

Any IIs today that aren't fake? Seems like before they came out mostly on tueadays

just sharing - I got my II on September 8th, and I was completed on 8/8. My interview is scheduled for November 10th.

Does anyone know if NYU sends out rejections alongside IIs, or do they just hold on to your app until the end of interview season?

LizzyM +78 and complete first week of August. Complete silence until now. Any idea when hope should be given up.

Has anyone received rejection emails? Complete the second week of August and I REALLLYYY want a chance to interview. When should I give up on NYU?

My guess is that they hold them as I haven't seen any posts about rejections. I was complete on 7/1 and I have heard nothing but silence, so I gave up hope for this school a long time ago.

They don't release any decisions until after they are done interviewing all candidates.

Is there a general protocol for thank you notes for MMI? I wasn't planning on sending one due to the nature of the interview format but wasnt sure!

I wasn't completely sure. It might not hurt to just send an email thanking the office.

Does anyone know if NYU has a place to store luggage during the day? Also, do you have to email them directly to note any dietary restrictions, or was there a place on the interview portal to indicate that? I can't remember whether I did it on the portal and I don't want to email them if I already indicated that...

There is space for luggage storage. I don't remember the deal with dietary restrictions though.

They gave me a separate meal due to my dietary restrictions. I'd completely forgot that I filled that out, so it must have been on the portal. Its worth pointing out that they had vegetarian and pescitarian options readily available.

PS. As a bonus for getting a separate meal, people will be intimidated by "the kid that packed his/her own lunch"

because they are giving out interview dates for november, if I was completed by mid August, do you guys think I should give up hope?

I did. But secretly hoping for miracle.

I was complete in July and received an II not too long ago, don't count yourself out!

So... I still haven't received a secondary (designated NYU after I was already verified on 8/8), I didn't think they screened, so I can only assume they are absolutely inundated with applications--right? Seeing all this about interviews already through November makes me feel like I wasted my money. Anyone out there like me?

I added Nyu after you and received a secondary the day after.......

I'd emailed them about a week ago too. I'll be calling them today, I suppose..

Good luck. Let us know how it turns out. They are inundated with applications but they should be able to get you a secondary!

Didn't get to speak to a human today... but left a VM.

Edit: Got my secondary this morning.. but I'm feeling like this is just too late :/

Do we have to submit tertiary together with secondary?

Is it too late to submit secondary for a 2014 interview?

As I sit in OHare due to travel difficulties I can give you guys my impression of my time at NYU.

I had a somewhat unusual experience in that I was invited to the MS2's post exam party by my host, so I got to see a lot of the social side of the students. It was pretty awesome to see that they can all be genuinely well-balanced people despite being in school. The school is pretty perfectly positioned for a 20something at the edge of Midtown, and it was nice to see that there is enough flexibility to take advantage of that, within reason.

Everyone that I talked to seemed to prefer the 1.5-2.5 setup, but I think there may be a little self-selection bias there in that people who applied disliking that curriculum just aren't at the school. In any case, it apparently works, and people will not hesitate to tell you that their Step 1 scores increased from a 235 average to 240 in the first year after the change in curriculum. As I noted earlier, they seemed to live completely full lives outside of school despite the tighter time and higher scores, so there didn't seem to be any trade off of increased stress from the curriculum.

As far as facilities go, the school did take a few hits during Hurricane Sandy, but they are using that as a chance to renovate some things like the study spaces. Bellevue is also beyond compare and pretty much encapsulates everything that draws me to NYC in terms of service, diversity, and pathology.

The MMIs themselves are what they are. I'm still lukewarm on the whole thing, but they're definitely no more stressful or difficult than traditional interviews. They just have a different pace. Moral of the story: don't stress out about it. There will be some stations you will wish you could redo, but that's true of any interview question.

Final Verdict: Loved the school itself, the interview day was short and didn't do as good a job selling it as the rest of my time there did.

UPDATE: I apologize for causing a panic! The glitch described below makes it look like there are course requirements, but there are not. There is absolutely no cause for alarm if you appear to be "missing" a page on the secondary.

I have an odd situation with this secondary--could someone help me out?

I submitted my secondary in August and got a complete email, and I have not been invited to interview. I logged back in just now to look over the secondary. I notice that there are instructions about entering course requirements, but I do not see any space to do so on my application. I can see the essays I wrote, which are listed as Page 1 and Page 2--but the URL for Page 2 actually ends in "Page3."

I searched this thread and saw that @ProbablyAPenguin wrote about the same issue on 7/10. Because she is sharper than I am, she fixed it by manually changing the URL before submitting the application. Sure enough, when I change the URL manually to end in "Page2," the course requirements part appears. And underneath the requirements it says, "No data was returned."

Does everyone else have three pages listed for the secondary application? Is anyone else without an interview invitation seeing 2 pages, like I am?

Thank you!

UPDATE: I repeat, no cause for alarm.
