2014-2015 New York University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have an odd situation with this secondary--could someone help me out?

I submitted my secondary in August and got a complete email, and I have not been invited to interview. I logged back in just now to look over the secondary. I notice that there are instructions about entering course requirements, but I do not see any space to do so on my application. I can see the essays I wrote, which are listed as Page 1 and Page 2--but the URL for Page 2 actually ends in "Page3."

I searched this thread and saw that @ProbablyAPenguin wrote about the same issue on 7/10. Because she is sharper than I am, she fixed it by manually changing the URL before submitting the application. Sure enough, when I change the URL manually to end in "Page2," the course requirements part appears. And underneath the requirements it says, "No data was returned."

Does everyone else have three pages listed for the secondary application? Is anyone else without an interview invitation seeing 2 pages, like I am?

Thank you!
+1 Yikes!

+1 here. What to do now...

+2 think there's anything we need to do to fix that at this point?

Wow! I wonder what this means for our applications? Have you emailed NYU about this issue?

UPDATE: ALL CLEAR.

I called the admissions office. "We no longer have course requirements," they said. They are aware of the glitch that makes it appear that they do.

Please return to normal levels of neuroticism.

I REPEAT: ALL CLEAR.

lol you started a fire

so we didn't have to take orgo? aw shucks.

Nope, you wasted your time!

The original reason I went looking for the course requirements section was that the FAQ on their secondary has several questions about how to fill it out. Turns out they have just failed to update the FAQ. It says right on their website that there are only "recommended" courses.

Have they not been offering II recently or have people just not been posting?

I can offer several explanations:

1. They may offer out IIs in waves, and therefore there is a calm before the storm, so to speak.
2. SDN users tend to apply earlier, and therefore the majority of SDN users who are going to get interviews, have already.

I don't know what is going on either, many threads are eerily calm.

I agree that it's definitely slow right now and agree with your reasoning. A third reason might be that a lot of people, once get onto the II stream might think realize there is no reason to obsessively checking or updating SDN, so we don't get to know their progress.

As I sit in OHare due to travel difficulties I can give you guys my impression of my time at NYU.

I had a somewhat unusual experience in that I was invited to the MS2's post exam party by my host, so I got to see a lot of the social side of the students. It was pretty awesome to see that they can all be genuinely well-balanced people despite being in school. The school is pretty perfectly positioned for a 20something at the edge of Midtown, and it was nice to see that there is enough flexibility to take advantage of that, within reason.

I think it's awesome that you had a chance to do that. I would love to get that sort of perspective on the schools I will interview at. Congrats on your experience!

Glad to hear people have enjoyed their experience!

Has anyone heard of this site... I feel like a mock interview with a med student who goes here would be insightful.
Hey there! Just did an mstp II here yesterday and I can agree, it was a great experience. We did the MMI too and it was actually a lot of fun! I used student mentor network and had mock interviews with Alexis, Justin and Seema. They we every helpful! I recommend it

Does anybody know when the last interview date here is? I'm thinking of writing an in-the-area email but I come in December 15th from Switzerland and I know interviews end sometime mid-December. Would greatly appreciate an answer for this one! 🙂

Last interview date for this year will be December 18!

Does that mean that if one does not receive an interview before December, they are basically toast for this school this year?

Do most schools finish interviewing in December?

They write on their website that they have rolling admission but last year the first acceptances went out late December...

The word out there NYU is a really early interview cycle. Check out last years thread for late II's.

How/where do we sign up for medical student housing? (can we?)

Does anyone know the best airport to fly into? Also, thoughts on staying in a hotel versus with a student host? I don't want to inconvenience a host if I have to arrive late at night, you know? I'm not really familiar with the area and would appreciate all advice!! So excited!

Laguardia is the closest , but JFK is more accessible by public transportation if you prefer that. I don't recommend flying into Newark.
Hotels are expensive but plentiful, i recommend staying in murray hill, kips bay, all of midtown east or midtown. If you have to select between a hotel thats more north/south of NYU, or west of NYU (NYU is all the way east), I recommend north/south as it is nearly impossibly to traverse east/west during rush hours, whether by cab or public transportation.

Long island city will offer potentially cheaper and nicer options, but stay in hunter's point. There is a ferry there, and for 5 bucks, that will take you right in front of NYU in less than 5 minutes total trip.

Personally, I prefer hotels because I know that I'll be overly considerate if I'm staying with a host (doesn't apply if I'm crashing at a friend's place), which will not help me rest well. With regards to hotels, everything's pricey in Manhattan, though I found the UN hotel to not be too bad ($300 is relatively less expensive), and it's walkable (0.6 miles north of admissions office).
I flew into JFK and took the air train and then subway towards a stop near my hotel, which cost me around $8.50(?) for one trip, but also took around an hour (maybe a little more), so if it's late, I might recommend taking a taxi.

Admissions also just sent an email about a webinar series. My heart jumped a little... Is this the first time they sent out an email not related to admissions?

Yeah I just got this too! Did you interview here yet? Are they sending this out to everyone? So many questions and still two months + till I hear back... must breathe...

Thanks for the input, bostonite and mostlyharmless1! Yeah, I'm leaning toward the convenience of a hotel since I do have to get in later at night.

congrats! when were you complete?

Thanks!! Also, I was complete 9/21!

Also, I think everyone gets that email. I got one as well just now.

I'd also recommend Airbnb. Just find one with solid reviews and it's pretty reliable. I'm both a host and a long time user. Never had a problem.

I just interviewed there today (I'm sitting in a terminal at LaGuardia right now actually). I stayed with a host last night and it was a good experience. We had dinner together and he answered any questions I had about the school. He showed me a bit of the school and even brought me to a class of his this morning before the interview day started. He lived in Greenberg Hall, which is about half a block from where you interview so you can't beat the location. I realize that you wouldn't get to talk with your host as much as I did because of your late flight though. One other potential downside was that I had to sleep on a couch. It wasn't a huge deal for me but I understand why some people would want a bed. I know you're leaning towards getting a hotel, but I just figured I'd let you know my experience with the host program. Good luck with your interview!

For those interested, I perused the 2013-2014 NYU Thread and found that indeed, NYU has a relatively early interview cycle. That being said, there were a handful of people who received II's in Oct. and even Nov. that were complete in Sept. and Oct., respectively, and at earlier dates too. Maintain faith people, stay hopeful!

I hope what you said would apply to this cycle. Although last year, due to the super delay on the part of AMCAS in verifying primary apps, many time lines are kinda skewed. I love NYU, but I am not putting much faith in her being receptive to my love.

Maybe only those who are II'd got the webinar thing?

Maybe some bored adcom sent them just to amuse him/herself at how all us donks on sdn will obsess over it.
Admit it. We are a bunch of DONKS.

Hope you enjoyed your laugh Dr (LizzyM?)

Turns out I might be able to get out to NYU a little earlier than expected, so I'm still going back and forth between the host/hotel decision. Thanks for the input!

Do you mind sharing stats and complete date. Congratssss!

Thanks! I posted my complete date earlier, but it's 9/21. Feel free to PM me for stats!

Hey everyone! Thought I'd give some insight into the current host vs hotel debate from an insider perspective. As an MS2 here, we LOVE hosting. Its really fun for us to see who might be at the school next year, and we always think its fun to see the students we host at revisit day or at orientation week if you decide to come here. All of us remember how sucky it was to pay for hotels while interviewing, and are happy to help out fellow students by offering a couch to surf on. Everyone who hosts volunteers to do so, and each person only gets to host a couple of students during the season because so many of us want to. Also the advantage to staying with a host is that we are available to answer your questions after the interview, especially when the final decision comes and you are trying to decide between multiple offers.

For anyone whose ALREADY interviewed, anyone know if its common to give thank you notes, especially because its MMI style? If so, how exactly do we do that... we don't have their emails. Thanks!

I was told on my interview day to not bother sending thank you notes so I didn't!
