2014-2015 New York University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I just checked out last year's thread for NYU. It seems around this time there were 3 weeks of dates left in December as well. In the second week of November a flurry of IIs went out. And then one more II third week of November. And one last II Dec 9th for Dec 10th date(1 day notice). Of course this information is from sdn users. So, really hoping next week we hear of some IIs.

Does anyone know what happens when you send in an update? I heard some schools reset your complete date to the updated date. But, wouldn't that be detrimental? It's like pushing you to the bottom of the pile when perhaps the adcom was just about to review your file again. I also heard updating forces adcoms to review your app again because they get notified it's been updated so in that case it would be like pushing it up on the pile or at least garnering some attention.
Should I wait one more week to send an update? I know IIs typically come out Tuesdays. So, if I don't hear anything next Tuesday, I'm going to send the letter.

@johnnytest my friend, you are making a lot of assumptions. Admissions offices are black boxes, so you should follow general good practices, and you will be fine. If you have an update to send in, send it when you're ready. Good luck.

I'm a first year here in case anyone has any questions.
Do you know how AOA works at NYU? I read online that they still try to incorporate test scores a little, but how would that work if the system is pass or fail?

Described here. Many P/F med schools still partition pre-clinical grades into sections (e.g. into quarters) for AOA purposes.

The questions becomes, then: How much does this AOA status really matter for residencies (compared to all the other factors like clinical grades, LORs, etc)

Interviewed elsewhere🙂....but made me love NYU even more😍.

My friend interviewed at NYU a couple weeks ago with a normal 1:1 interview. Has NYU been interviewing this cycle with just MMI or is it a mixed bag of possibilities?

1:1? Is he applying for MSTP? I thought they were strictly MMI, but I could be wrong..I had MMI on mine

For the regular track MD, it definitely is MMI-only

but is there not one MMI station where it is kinda like a traditional 1-1, tell me about yourself? or is that not there anymore, and it literally is only MMI scenarios?

Who knows? It's part of the fun. Interviewed applicants aren't allowed to disclose any of the stations regardless.

Alright then, here they are.
Station 1: One of the things that we at NYU pride ourselves on is how cool we are. Please tell us about how cool you are. Feel free to provide examples of times where you broke any rules because it was cool.
Station 2: You are a doctor, and your patient is a New York Giants fan. How do you treat him?
Station 3: You are a doctor, and your patient is a New York Jets fan. How do you treat him?
Station 4: One of the challenges of living in Manhattan is dealing with the constant traffic, especially during rush hour. Please demonstrate your traffic-related awareness and competence by playing this game of Frogger on the game console that we have provided in front of you while we ask you various ethics-related questions. You have one life.
Station 5: You are walking down the street when you see a man who appears to be unresponsive and unconscious. You quickly hurry to examine him and to provide potentially needed aid when you notice that he is wearing a Boston Redsox cap. What is your next move?
Station 6: Please tell us about your favorite scene from Sharknado 2: The Second One. Bonus points for mentioning scenes that could only have been possible because of New York City.
Station 7: One of the goals that we at NYU have when assembling a class is to assemble a class that reflects cultural diversity. Please demonstrate to us that you are not a huge nerd.
Station 8: Please write your SDN screen name on this sheet of paper, and provide the password so that we can verify it.

Note: You also get bonus points for quoting any Jay-Z lines that may be relevant to whatever you're talking about.

Station 7 and 8 were real. Source: someone who did not get an II at NYU

They prefer you express said answers in interpretive dance.
How do we know you are to trust after you've done your station 8? Are you who you said you are? or are you just someone who's sitting in an office on 1st ave and 32nd street trying to have some fun by logging in as claduva94 and messing around with the applicants on SDN...

It's p/np but you're still told how you did relative to the average when you get your exam score back. Your grade is basically shown to you on one of those little quartile plots. They told us something about how if you're in the top quartile for all of pre-clinicals you get a small brief mention of it in your dean's letter for residency. Then they went on to tell us that no residency director really cares about that brief mention.

As for AOA, we were told tons of people get into the "dean's letter blurb group" in pre-clinicals and don't get into AOA and tons of people get into AOA but were never in that higher bracket for pre-clinicals.

The only way I can give you an answer is through interpretive dance.

Also yes it's strictly MMI for MD only. I can definitely hear all of you giving all your answers very loudly every time I walk by the interview rooms to go to financial aid :|

"have been" invited suggests its already done. AHHH NYU!

Was this the last wave of IIs since interviews end mid-December?

Yup, seems like this is it!!! 🙁

Some light forum stalking says that last year they gave out an interview invite 11/19, and they had already offered the end of Dec date prior to that...so there may at least be a week left!!

Best of luck to everyone vying for the last few interview spots! You can do it!

Also got accepted!!! (hopefully, yay!) Definitely wasn't expecting it this early!
Double shots girl Amazing! You should have twice as much celebration tonight!
@breakintheroof , I thought you are going to go dormant for a bit, instead you are here following my foot steps congratulating people.

Yeah I can't even believe it right now... I heard nothing at all since Oct 15 and then 2 acceptances within an hour. So happy. Congrats to everyone else!

You caught me! The Sinai excitement made me reinstall the app.

Congratulations to the accepted! I just clicked the "withdraw" button (I can confirm it does not ask for confirmation). I hope my interview spot next week goes to someone!

Congrats everyone!!! Wow!!! What an awesome surprise. No word here....
