2014-2015 New York University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So if we have a post-interview update, do we just post it in the additional information section?

My application was complete on 10/5. I still haven't heard anything, and I'm nervous because there can't possibly be very many interview slots left. Has anyone else who completed near then heard back at all? I'm starting to think that they are just going to wait until after all of the interviews to reject those who didn't get one.

Just a guess, but I would say that most schools when reviewing applicants will choose to 1) invite them immediately for an interview, 2) Reject them straight away (probably not very many), 3) Wait and see until they've gone through more applications to see how this one stacks up against the entire pool.

If you haven't heard yet, don't worry! Most schools will stop accepting secondaries soon, so no more new applicants. That probably means they'll go back and review everyone for whom they have been putting off a decision. II's may ensue!

I loved NYU and hope you get to visit soon, too!

they say for their interview to be familiar with "current events and social policies". where would be the best place to read up and get updated on this stuff? thanks!

Personally, I'm rather fond of the Huffington Post.

Worth it to send any pre-interview updates at this point? Seems like most interview spots have been filled already

It is very possible that they are no longer inviting as their class has filled up or is filling up fast. Still there is hope...

I read this book in preparation for the interview cycle and, while I haven't been asked yet about the politics of healthcare, I am still glad I read it. It's a good read! Not dry at all. But any reputable news site will do, too.

how helpful are update letters post-interview at NYU? I interviewed about a month ago. I really liked my day at NYU and want to express some interest, as well as have some updates. However, at my interview day, it seemed like they do some sort of numerical ranking of your interview soon after and the fate of your application is kind of sealed after that.

Any thoughts on whether to send an update letter now, or save it until February if I'm waitlisted?

What a bummer. I interviewed in mid Oct. too but no news. Congrats to you. Are you a NY state resident?

Same here... no news yet. I thought the dean that talked to us mentioned that decisions would not be released until mid December. I could be mistaken though.

Don't believe the 300 number probably untrue based on their twitter feed and that they are giving out more II's

I saw the twitter post today: "Current reviewing all apps we've received since our secondary deadline and will send out the last set of interview invites soon!: ... It seems like they mean that they are only considering those who submitted their apps close to the secondary deadline for new IIs.

I thought this as well initially but later realized they probably ranked all applicants and are just placing the remaining apps on that list & will send out the final II's to the top X number of applicants, regardless of when those people applied.

Someone at NYU messed up the wording; after all they received NO applications SINCE the deadline. I think StayCoolIceCube is right

Ahh okay, that makes sense

First Post on SDN! I received an II today and the dates that were available to me were the week of 12/15-12/19 so the last few invites are going out now.

Congrats!! When were you complete? Was it around the deadline?

That's awesome!

From the twitter it's nice to know they put an effort into giving later apps a fair shake. There's one school I'm thinking of that finishes interviews on a similar early timeline where you don't have much chance if you aren't in by September.

So if we don't have one now, safe to say that we're out of the running for this school?

The admissions team seems to be pretty active on twitter. I wouldn't count yourself out until there is a tweet saying all interview invites have been sent out!

I checked last year's twitter post and NYU didn't post such an "our interviews are fully scheduled" status. Anyone else thinking they are done from this Wednesday's wave of II?

I keep hoping that because they only started looking at apps again on Tuesday, that they aren't yet finished and will send out some more over the next couple of days, but that could just be wishful thinking.

Accepted here in mid-November! Just about a month after interviewing.

Per last year's thread, someone apparently got an MSTP II on 12/9 for a 12/10 interivew. lol

If that was for MD and I got one today for an interview tomorrow, I'd freaking go.

I might just make up an ITA letter for that week and shoot it there way. No harm at this point...

Called the NYU MSTP office, and they said that they were pretty much done. No rejection or II at this point means that you are on hold, which gives you a very low chance of getting an II if someone drops. :/

I assume that you are referring to pre-interview rejection when you say rejection?

If you haven't heard from them or gotten an interview you're basically rejected at this point. I called them and all interview days are full, yet they haven't rejected us. It's astonishing that NYU can't hit one button and just reject us instead of stringing us out for no reason.

People cancel last minute and they like having options to fill in those spots. I don't know if I would describe it as "astonishing" so much as "kind of makes sense, and they have every right to do it that way even though it may be somewhat frustrating for some of us even though we aren't owed anything by the school".

Any value in a Letter of Intent now? I interviewed mid-October and haven't heard back. I heard from friends who applied in previous years that they sent post-interview LOIs, and were then accepted in the next wave of acceptances.

I think the majority of the mid oct acceptances did not come out earlier last month, and we're still waiting to hear from them. However, definitely worth sending an update if you have something to update them about, no harm done 🙂
