2014-2015 Ohio State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those of you who have interviews coming up, this is one to look forward to. The students are sooo nice and the dean of admissions is kind of a bro (very relaxed and clearly passionate about the school). Campus is beautiful and the two interviews (one faculty, one student) are very conversational and blind to stats. They are evaluating: will you be a compassionate and competent physician (faculty) and would I want you as a classmate/to work on a team with you (student).
They go super in depth about the new curriculum (LSI: lead, serve inspire) and how hands on early clinical exposure is a huge emphasis so though the website is a little sparse, you will know all the great things about the school prior to the interviews (which are in the afternoon).

I stayed with a student host and got to check out some of their student clubs the night prior and it was awesome to meet current students and see what they get to do outside of academics-- would highly recommend staying with a host if possible!

A lot of people (including myself) have been confused about the complete/received status. For those of you who have received an II, did your status just say "received" prior to that? I've submitted the primary, secondary, and my letters via AMCAS, but I have no idea if I'm "complete." I want to avoid hassling them if I can.

Thanks!

II today! OOS, LizzyM ~ 74 (Lower GPA/High MCAT). I'm really excited to visit this school!!! I wish they didn't pick a Wednesday date for me though; I had to reschedule...

When were you complete? And roughly when are they scheduling for? Thanks <3

Mine only ever said received, I believe.

I don't remember exactly when I was complete, but I submitted the secondary a few days after I received it. They had scheduled me for October 15th.

I submitted my primary app on 9/16, but I'm yet to get a secondary. Do you guys know if OSU screens their applicants or should I call them? I guess I should work on the questions ahead of time anyway, I just don't want to be delayed any further.

Thank you. As a lady-in-waiting, I find all information helpful; yours was particularly so.

Has anyone that was complete near the end of August received an interview invitation yet?

Does anyone know if the MSAR for Ohio State is correct, in that they interview about 1/3 of in state applicants?

Very excited for my interview day, this school has quickly become one of my top choices and I am so honored for this opportunity (especially as an OOS applicant!) Never been to Columbus before...any suggestions on places to eat?

Not a specific place, but there a lot of awesome restaurants in an area called the Short North (near campus). Also try out the North Market.

Thank you! Ahhh so very excited, I cannot contain myself (and I am also wholly terrified)

Breathe. . . .breathe. . . .breathe! By the way, that Baby Penguin is mighty cute! At first I thought it was a duckling, and was afraid that you aspired to be a Quack. 🙂

I was wondering if anyone knows more about what the acceptance process is like. According to their website, there's a committee vote after each interview day, so are the actual decisions only released in two week intervals (assuming it's after 10/15)?

Good luck guys! As a Columbus native OSUCOM is the dream for me. But I'm a sophomore and am way out in CT so I'm living vicariously through yall this cycle.

Dirty Frank's Hot Dog Palace is a GREAT lunch spot in downtown Columbus.. not exactly adjacent to OSU though. Otherwise, check out the Short North as others have suggested.

Yes. There are meetings every two weeks to evaluate the candidates interviewed up to that point, and the top ones are accepted after that meeting. If you've been accepted, you can expect a call or text message, usually from Dr. Capers, telling you the good news. This is for those rated highly post interview.

For those rated below those individuals, you can still be accepted after that, it just depends on how highly you're rated against the other remaining interviewers.

Hey, Forever Zero, congratulations! I finally got an II today (or sometime in the night?), also with a Wednesday date. Was it difficult for you to reschedule? Were there Mondays or Fridays available? Maybe I will see you there in Columbus! (We have, I believe, similar stats.) For those who track such things (and I am one, although I'm not sure that this is a sign of sound mental hygiene), my LizzyM is somewhere around yours, and with the same balance. I was marked "complete" on August 11th and have been waiting impatiently ever since--I'm in-state, so was hoping to get a chance at OSU.

II today! I am so excited I love this school! Complete early Sept (LizzyM 66-69).
Also, do you mind sharing your mcat? I was told by someone on admissions that "a 31 or greater" is typically required for an interview" and was just curious if that statement holds true.

That would explain the reason I'm likely passed over at this point:laugh:

Same... I spoke with the same person twice. First time I was told "Apply, we accept people with 26 + every year" and then next time I was told a 31 was usually necessary to be considered for an interview. So I don't know!

When were you guys complete? My MCAT is higher than 31 and I haven't heard anything.

For everyone without an interview yet, does your medstar still just say "received"?

This is my top choice, anyone know if they are receptive to pre interview update/interest letters?

They only do interviews on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Can't wait for my interview! Does anyone know if the interviews are laid back?

Interviews are very conversational and relaxed. It's a pretty fun day. They are not supposed to ask any ethical questions so you're safe haha. More details in my post at the top of the page!

It probably differs from person to person. I liked my student interviewer, but felt pretty stressed out with my faculty interviewer. I felt as if both my interviewers kept referring to a checklist they had though and so asked me questions accordingly based on that list, and hence I felt like my interviews were more like "answer this" "answer this" with no follow ups. I think it just depends on who you get for your interviewer and how you interview/they interview. Hopefully it'll work out!

I really didn't think I would be this nervous about an interview at this point... But it's OSU. I really hope our first date goes well...

I had the exact same experience. Faculty interviewer actually had a checklist in front of him based on categories of activities (leadership, service, etc.) during my college time and basically asked me questions like "anything else in this category? How many hours?" Not a ton of follow up. Student interviewer was great.

Yeah, I was one of the very first people to interview at OSU so I didn't really know what I was going into and consequently freaked out a bit. If I could re-do my interview, I would definitely try to "de-stress" myself and take a few moments to think before I answered questions…I just got kind of freaked out by how fast the questions were coming and how they were being asked. This wasn't my first interview either though.

I just received an email from Admissions urging me to apply. Is this common? Is it too late to submit my application here?

Yeah, I have to say that I felt that my interview was kind of stiff. Both faculty and student clearly had a check list of questions that they were asking, so it didn't feel too conversational. I don't know if they necessarily were bad, but right now I have no idea how I did. If you haven't had an interview yet, I would prepare for questions like "tell me about a time when (blank) happened and how you dealt with it". I felt that I answered adequately but somewhat awkwardly (there was at least one line I gave that completely butchered numerous grammatical rules).

Aside from that though, I was very impressed with the facilities, curriculum, setting, and students of the school.

I just got one but I have already applied. Its just an automated email based on your MCAT Scores saying that its within their admission threshold. Depending on the rest of your application, (GPA, EC, PS, LORs) they will extend an interview to you.
