2014-2015 Oregon Health & Science University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
That puts you in a "mission group," and a good group to be in. You are very much above the average for my class, and I think the class before and after me too. If the committee liked your application/essays, you should have no problem getting an interview. Good luck. 🙂

Oh sweet, thanks!

I wonder if tomorrow will bring some more interview invites. Looks like last years came out this week for apps completed in sept. If not have a good halloween guys!
My app was marked complete 8/28 and I received my II in the last round so they should be getting closer to the later complete dates. Good luck!

Any OOS non-Oregon heritage IIs yet?

Why do you ask? Have there not been any, yet?

I'm OOS, non-Oregon heritage, and part of a mission group; complete on 7/29 and haven't heard anything. Really hoping for an II. I want to do rural primary care along with public health research, and OHSU is ranked really high and well known in these areas.

Not that I'm aware of. I'm in a similar boat, OOS, complete in august, non-Oregon heritage, but part of a mission group.

I haven't seen any IIs that aren't IS applicant or Oregon-heritage.
I know of at least 1 but not sure when complete or anything else

I received the "hold" status today via status check (no e-mail).

Interviewed early October, IS, LizzyM 74, non-trad, strong connections to OHSU.

If anyone is interested, this is the message:

"Since your interview, you have been discussed by the Admissions Committee and were placed in the hold pool.

With roughly 500 interviews conducted over the course of seven months (September through March) and a limited number of placements to offer, the Admissions Committee must put many applicants in the hold pool until they have had a chance to discuss each of their interviewed candidates. The Admissions Committee will be discussing applicants through the beginning of April, which means that you will be notified of a final decision regarding your application no later than April 30, 2015. Applicants put on hold will remain on hold until April 30, when final decisions are made. At that point you will hear a decision of Accept, Alternate, or Refuse. Please note that further updates will not reopen your file or change the committee's decision.

We realize this is an anxious time of waiting and thank you for your understanding and patience."

Sorry to hear that! I interviewed 10/1 and my status hasn't changed yet.

I bet you'll get good news soon, they're probably writing your acceptance letter 🙂! I'm disappointed but not surprised, it was my first MMI interview and I didn't feel like it went super well.

I'm not so sure! I didn't think my MMI went really great either. I guess time will tell!

Sorry to hear! Many of my friends at OHSU were accepted of the hold pool, hope this is the case for you. I'm sitting here with two tabs open; my email and portal. Which ever changes first! will see.

Is it true that if you're on "hold" you won't hear anything until April 30th, or do they just say that? Can you be accepted anytime before April with a hold?

Most likely going off years past at least almost no one in the hold pool hears before then. (In the past it was later, around May 10th) but there has been a few each you who have come off hold to be accepted via SDN

This is how it has gone in the past. Everything you do for the application and the interview gets a point value. Those with point values high enough are offered acceptances (usually about 10% of the interviews). Those that score low enough are given rejection notices (also about 10-20% of interviews). The middle group is put on "hold" until everyone that can interview has been processed. Then they make a rank-list based on your score. The top scoring people are offered positions up to the number of seats left (from the automatic acceptances). The rest are put on a numbered wait list. As people decline their acceptance (why would anyone go somewhere else???), then the wait-list moves up the numbers. This can move several places all at once, or it can drag out for days at a time without movement.

Most of my class is made of people that were accepted off the hold in May. There are a lot that were also accepted off the wait-list in June and July.

A "hold" post interview is not a death sentence. There is still a good chance that you can make it into OHSU, you just won't find out until April or May. This can really hurt you if you are accepted at a school that has a non-refundable tuition deposit, or if you need to make plans to move across the country.

I really think that OHSU should get a new system for accepting people. I think that they are loosing a lot of good people by putting them on hold until the very end. There are a lot of people that will take a sure thing somewhere else while still waiting for OHSU to play the "hold game." But the school does not care. They still fill all their seats, and they still collect the tuition, and there are still people waiting in line to fill any seat that opens up.

edit: I forgot to mention that infrequently, the admission committee can re-normalize the automatic admissions score. If they find that a year is going without a certain number of automatic admissions, they will set the score to a new number. Then they would accept anyone that is above that new score off the hold list. So if the prior automatic acceptance is an 85, and you scored an 84, you are put on hold. But if they drop the automatic acceptance to 83, then you are invited to join the class at that time and not have to wait for May. This is how people have gotten off the hold list in the past.

This is exactly how it was explained to us at the interview.

On a separate note, I really appreciate your posts here and in the COMP-NW threads. They've helped me tremendously in navigating this mess of a process. If I am fortunate enough to make it to OHSU, I will most certainly have to buy you lunch.

Thanks again dsoz!

I think exitonly29 is right regarding the delay. Complete since early Sept and IS. Congrats to those with interviews! Let us HOPE that those of us who are neurotically checking the dual source (i.e. portal and email simultaneously lol) will also get some luv from OHSU. On a side note, applied to PNWU and got interview invite in less than a week! I wish all medical schools are like that and there is some element of cockiness on the part of schools like OHSU but I also do not know the reasoning behind their thinking and how they love to play games knowing full well that pre-meds are already neurotic and type-A personalities! At any rate, we just have to wait because if we get in, it is worth it (at least that is what we are being told). Good luck to all of you and just wanted to share those rants and I know some of you can relate.

Has only one person so far had their post interview status updated?

I was complete mid september, OOS GPA>3.6, MCAT> than 34. Any ideas on when I might hear from the mythical OHSU? Hoping for that interview invite!!!

Seems like so. It's odd, I thought they would responded in the same day to everyone who interviewed on the same day. Hopefully hear back by tomorrow, I don't want to wait any longer.

You may have had a different 1on1 then the other person who had heard back already. That person has to be at the committee meeting. But still surprising more people haven't heard/haven't posted they heard. Applying definitely teaches patience

They told me it'd probably be 6 weeks until I hear (they said 4-6 weeks, closer to 6) and I interviewed 4.5 weeks ago. So I'm not surprised at the silence thus far!

Are there any current OHSU students that are (or know of) OOS, non-mission students that were interviewed or accepted? Just curious if I'm spinning my gears here. I'm a non-trad and my undergrad GPA from a decade ago is now haunting me with this school. I do have a 3.8+ sGPA from my post-bacc.

They say we'll be evaluated by January. Am I basically wait-listed if I even get a II?

From what I have heard, they almost never interview outside of their mission based groups. But that list is pretty broad.

Complete 9/2 and still no peep from OHSU! I hope the dog did not eat my app:bang: but good luck and congrats to those who are fortunate enough to move on to the next step!

Scheduled interview for next Friday, November 14th. Anyone else interviewing on that date?

Anyone know why they have people schedule dates using e-mail? First time I have seen that so it made me curious.

Ease of use, allows people time to respond especially for OOS. Also so everyone who gets an interview invite on the same day has an chance at replying to their priority date. Less time involved in an email then calls back and forth if people don't answer too.

Oh, well calling would be a terrible idea. All of mine had been scheduled using the admissions portal.

Good question! I wish their is an app that allows one to schedule and know of one's fate in real time! I guess med schools need to hire robots. I think OHSU is not known for being technologically savvy. But it would be great if there is a way to expedite the whole process.

Yeah I actually have heard that they don't have any(or very few) web developers so guessing having a calendar based online system would be too much to handle.
