2014-2015 Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My scanned award letter is up on the status page 🙂. One more reason to matriculate here.

No email yet.
I just freaked out and checked... and mine is still totally blank 🙁

Does it say anything about merit aid?

*edit* found my letter! - but no mention of merit (yes or no)

No merit here. Not sure if they have been awarded yet or not - either way, Penn is by far my cheapest option.

Ditto! Penn is slightly more expensive than one other option for me, but it is most likely going to be worth that differential. I'd be very surprised if I weren't at Penn next fall!

Wow...Penn is super generous with financial aid this is going to make things very difficult

I got the most generous Need Based loan yet. Almost double what other, similarly ranked schools have offered. No merit aid here.

I cant find the letter on the status page, and my financial aid page is still blank... where exactly did you guys see the letter?

*Edit* it's like right under the thing that says "congratulations"

Hmm yeah mine isn't showing up yet. Guess I just need to be more patient!! :dead:

FWIW I emailed the financial aid office earlier this week and got an auto response that said:
"The award letters are now available for you to view on the Status page. This information will be entered into Your Financial Aid Page later this week."

so I think they should all be up in scanned letter form at least.

Such generous need-based aid. Falling more in love with Penn by the day <3

21st century merit scholarship! Looks like I finally know where I will be attending medical school 🙂. I can't wait for second look.
Congrats! Were you notified in your scanned letter along with need based aid? Or were you notified via email/phone/something else?

Were you informed of your scholarship via email or was it part of your financial aid notification page?

+1 for the generous aid... they gave me a need based scholarship that's almost full tuition. I think I'm pretty positive I'll be here in August.
Apologies to the people who weren't so lucky 🙁

I was notified on the portal like the others who have posted. It was together with the need-based aid information.

no financial aid whatsoever for me, just loans. pretty heartbroken right now 🙁

I'm sorry to hear this. I would encourage you to talk to the financial aid office during second look if you are attending. If you have any other offers of aid, definitely bring them along. The aid office seems pretty committed to matching any other offers.

thanks for the advice! I'm not sure if I'll be attending second look at this rate - I don't think I can handle falling in love with Penn even more if it's not going to work out. I plan on calling the office this week to let them know about a full-tuition scholarship at another top school. fingers crossed! congratulations to you, and thanks again!

A huge congrats to everybody who got exciting financial aid news today, and for those still waiting...stay strong, and don't lose hope! In my experience, the administration is open to these conversations, so I wouldn't hesitate to call and inquire.
One of the big reasons I chose Penn was a distinct sense that they wanted me in their class, in a very personal way. Backing up that feeling monetarily is just one very nice way in which they convey this. All your hard work has paid off, and you all deserve this. Go celebrate! :highfive:

Does this make your decision easier or harder? 🙂
Does this mean we will be classmates?! 🙂
Yes! No?! I don't know!!!

I received an email about an hour later from Gaye Sheffler regarding the scholarship. Gmail said it would have gone to spam if I hadn't set up a filter putting .edu messages on a safe list.

Sending congratulations to those who got the aid they needed, and sympathy to the ones who haven't. I hope that Penn changes their mind and finds a way to be affordable for everyone.

+1 Holy ****. It's in a merit scholarship PDF linked underneath the acceptance letter on the main page (my financial aid page is still blank). Holy ****.
That's awesome! I can feel the complexity and difficulty of your decision increasing by the minute! haha

Best of luck and let me know where you end up!

Not sure how many people have heard that some claimed to have a specially worded waitlist letter and said they were invited to second look as wait lister, but Penn Med admission said that's not the case. They won't be looking at the non ranked waitlist until April 30th. After having been accepted off waitlist the school will welcome these students to have their individual revisits.

What are people planning to wear at Preview (especially girls)? I know it says casual/"dress casual," but how is everyone interpreting that exactly? And are you planning on changing before the evening outings/is there even time?

I'm bringing jeans and nice blouses and maybe one business casual outfit 🙂

It's gonna be colder for the next few days than it's been this last week so make sure to bring some light-warm clothing!

Do you need warm clothing? PM me and I can find some or alternatively you can buy a jacket at the penn merchandising event
I think I'll be ok!! Not as bad as I thought 🙂

Do you know if jeans are ok to wear during the day events?

so unbelievably in love with this school. my original financial aid package was 100% loans, but after talking to the financial aid office and showing them some scholarship offers I've gotten from other schools, I got a call today offering me the 21st Century Merit Scholarship!!! I wasn't expecting that at all and hadnt made arrangements to go to Preview, so unfortunately I won't be able to join you all tomorrow, but you will definitely see me there in the Fall! I can't wait!

It was great seeing you all! Good luck with decisions 🙂

Absolutely loved Preview, and am very close to committing. Out of curiosity, any idea how Penn's Step 1 and 2 scores are so high compared to other similarly ranked programs? According to USN, they're 246 and 250 with 100% pass rates on each...that's obviously awesome, but I'm a little worried it could be indicative of a stressful environment.

That said, every student I met seemed awesome and not-too-stressed, so I guess I'm just double-checking.

Looking forward to seeing everybody in August! My own 2 cents:
well-structured curriculum (1.5year pre-clinical, Step1 after clerkships etc.) + Intrinsically intelligent students, who are good test takers = insane board scores.

Yeah we have the highest Step 1 scores in the country. I'm not sure why; our pre-clinical curriculum is really relaxed. I think it has to do with the fact that you basically take your Step 1 during your 3rd year of medical school, after you've taken the insane shelf exams/done your clerkships. The quality of life the first 1.5 years is fantastic. I can't speak for clinics since I'm not there yet, but it seems that can be hit and miss based on your personality (as it is everywhere). The pre-clinical exams aren't bad at all (I was anticipating worse before matriculating) and it's really easy to get honors if that's your thing (more than half the class gets honors on every exam).

Thanks so much! I actually just committed to penn about 2 hours ago, but that makes me feel a lot better! 🙂
