2014-2015 Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hello all, I am an accepted applicant from the 2013-2014 cycle who deferred a year and will be starting at Penn in 2015. So first off...best of luck to all of you applying and congrats to those with II! I know this process has its highs and lows, some heartbreak and a lot of excitement. There are current students who are better qualified to answer Penn specific questions, but if any of you have questions about my experiences during the last cycle, why I chose Penn etc. I would be more than happy to comment. I can't wait to meet all of you future classmates. Stay strong!

Hello Quantamflame: I am applying to Perelman this year, but i am also applying for a fulbright. If I get both, i am hoping the school will allow me to defer my admission by a year. I was wondering if you don't mind sharing how you managed to get a deferral. Thanks.

Hi sohhm: anecdotally, Penn is really open to deferrals. As long as you have a meaningful experience planned, I would say you have a great shot of getting a deferral. Personally, I brought this up during second look weekend (Penn Preview), and the process was fairly informal. An email to the director of admissions formally requesting the deferral was sufficient, and I got a letter in the mail confirming. Pretty painless. Good luck with both of your applications!

Hi Quantamflame thanks for the quick reply. I was worried because I have been hearing that schools are less open about allowing students to do this. Good to hear perelman is not amongst them.

Interesting, I hadn't heard of this trend. I can't speak to whether Penn is more or less likely to grant a deferral now than in the past, only to say that it was a very straightforward process for me.

Does Upenn do rolling admissions, or do they just have one admissions date in March?

One date in march 15th. Non rolling. Congrats Penguin! I wish to have your blessing.

Ohhh so when i schedule my interview doesn't matter???? at all?
The admissions committee still meets on a regular basis, but the final decisions aren't released until mid-March. It won't make a huge difference if you schedule a month from now or two months from now.

In the grand scheme of things, I don't think when you schedule your interview makes a huge difference. That being said, I still think there is an (slight) advantage to interviewing early. Congrats on the interview!

II here this morning! And they definitely get bonus points for the simplest and most convenient student hosting process I've used so far

Good to know! That's something to look forward to! (in addition to the II 😉)
Congrats jibbles!

Congrats to those with II! And I have to concur, the entire Penn secondary website was one of the cleanest and most functional of my entire cycle.

I think the days I was offered were a Wednesday, Friday and the following Monday IIRC. Unfortunately can't verify because I'm past the window to change dates through the website.

II today for MSTP. Complete ~7/20 (not exactly sure when my letters transmitted). I agree on the student host/nicest website yet! Good luck to all others applying 🙂

II for MSTP too. When is your interview date? Mine will be on Nov 20th.

Anyone know how many acceptances are offered to all interviewed? Can't find the stats online and I don't have US news subscription.

II! I'm actually pretty surprised at this one, my app wasn't complete that early, but I'm super excited nonetheless. Dates are for early Oct.

II! I got it yesterday and was offered dates from late September through October, booked for 10/3. Complete on 7/16.

I don't have numbers, but my year I believe it was roughly 1/3, give or take some. Someone should correct me if I'm wrong though

II! All the interview dates I can waitlist for look so much more appealing than the priority interview dates I can choose from, but signed up and excited nonetheless!

What do you mean by interview dates you can wait list for rather than priority interview dates?

I was given a list of dates I had priority to register for, and then a list of dates I could join a wait list for.

So like all the dates I could pick were T/W/Thursday. And then I could opt onto a waitlist for one of the M/F Interview days but it's not guaranteed (as I'm on a waitlist then)

(Can simultaneously sign up for a date and for a waitlisted date)

OH, that's new and interesting! What week/month were the dates in?

I got the same thing, but instead of by day of the week it was by month. So I got priority for October dates, and could waitlist for September dates.

Has anyone sent Penn an In The Area email?
I'm thinking about sending one myself. I'd be interested in reading others' experiences.

Should I send one? If so, send an email, or use their correspondence portal in the application website?

I guess they send them out in batches because I got one too!

I was complete in early August.
