2014-2015 Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Every time I check in on SDN, after checking various threads and seeing II's (while crickets live in my inbox), the heart squeeze of panic overcomes me. Hugely happy for the good news of others, but wishing I had some of my own!

Hang in there! Those of us with the slow SLOW cycles and the weeks (now months) of waiting for news rather than hours/days do exist! I totally empathize with that panicky feeling, but I try to remember that those later interviews have to be offered to someone! Anyway, just a fellow applicant here also trying to stay positive 🙂

I appreciate your sentiments! Very correct positive thinking!

I have to admit that whenever I've mentioned "I read on SDN...." (Which I don't even admit anymore), I got an eye roll that says you can't judge how it's going by reading "that." Analytically I get this, but in the absence of a support group in a church basement for neurotic med school applicants it's all there is! Definitely staying positive with the belief that I'll be more prepared when the II's come if I practice calm and zen like thinking now!

Quick question for those who have attended the happy hour--I can't find anything on the website about dress code. Did other interviewees typically stick to business casual or were most people more formal (ie, with suit jacket)?

Excited / (very) nervous to interview!

I've been wondering this too. Would anyone who's interviewed care to comment?

I wasn't able to make the happy hour, but I can't imagine you'd be expected to wear a suit jacket. If it were me, I would stick with business casual. Button down, nicer pants, decent shoes, etc. But no suit.

I also wasn't able to make it to the happy hour. I was originally planning on going though and I feel like I remember the student who was organizing it saying it's a lot more casual than interview day. Like onceawolverine said, you don't need a suit and business casual should be fine. You might even be able to go a little more casual, like a polo with khakis if you're a guy or a nice blouse and skirt if you're a girl (sorry, I'm not really too familiar with women's clothing so I don't know if that was actually a good suggestion).

Ditto this, happy hour is for you guys so you can meet each other and us and get any first questions out of the way. No need to dress to impress, just look presentable. Keep yourselves comfortable!

Did people ever receive "Application Complete" emails from here?

No, but I would just log into their site and check your app status.

Also, if anyone's wondering, I was convinced that Penn would already be into January interviews, but many dates are open in November / very early Dec.

Can anyone tell me the name of the bar/restaurant for the social the night before? Thanks!

I received the following status on the portal

The Committee on Admissions reviewed your application but has not invited you for an interview at this time. Additional reviews will occur and any change in your status will be communicated to you.

Is Perelman receptive to updates at this point in the process?

+1 Same status.

They are receptive to updates btw, you can upload them on their website.

+2. Same thing here. Anyone know if this is pretty much a death sentence or does anyone get invited after the "additional reviews"?

In past years, people have definitely gotten interviews after this specific status change. It's not many and likely won't happen until the end of the interview season, but if you have any significant updates, it might be worth it to let the adcom know!

Hey thank you so much for the reply darkjedi. I both hate you and love you for keeping my hopes alive. I'll make sure to send in any updates I have.

has anyone who applied MD-PhD experienced a status change on the portal?

Change to what? I think mine has stayed the same

to anything really, but mostly i was referring to the "hold" status that some of the MD-only applicants above have been talking about above^. mine has stayed the same as well.....

Got the same thing from Penn as well. Complete mid august.

I'll call that a rejection. Atleast I can say I've heard back from a philly school now...

Does anyone know what the deal is with this 'happy hour' event the night before interviews? I have my interview Thursday and it will really be a pain for me to get to the happy hour, but if it increases my chances even a little I have no problems finding a way. I hear its pretty informal and mostly informational but just wanted to see hear the experiences of others.

Won't affect your chances at all. We don't even keep track of who actually comes. Its really just another chance for you to socialize with fellow interviewees and some students -which will be a select few since we're taking exams right now. Its fun, but don't worry about having to miss it cause you'll have plenty of chances to meet, greet, and ask questions on interview day

Still 3.5 months away from the decision day. :zombie:

EDIT: I'm a full, it's 4.5 months away. Can't count.

Anyone else noticed that they took the line "we interview until January" out of "the hold" message?

Getting accepted here would be so amazing and I just keep thinking about it. The more I think about it, though, the more I replay my interviews in my head, wondering "Should I have said that? Did I come across as the way I wanted to?" Is it March yet?

+1!!!!!!!! You read my mind. Just when I read the first two words you said I had a mild myocardial infarction.

We won't know for sure until it no longer concerns us, but perhaps the number of applications is so high this year that schools are lengthening the interview season?

This process is full of neuroticism and speculation.

Does anyone get a call from UPenn asking about how the interview day goes post interview?

To add to this neuroticism and speculation: per last year's thread it looks like no one reported getting an II after the SOD. But one MS2 anectdotally said that he did the 2 years prior, so it can happen, it just looks like it is very unlikely. Rejections go out officially at the end of January when they're done interviewing. Others who do not have the SOD are still in the running it looks like they send IIs mid-December and early January.

+1 to the "we reviewed your file but did not give you an II" pile. Oh well. Long shot.

What is the SOD?
