2014-2015 Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So pumped to see the new building. Is the whole thing open to students or are they still working on parts of the building?

To all those with pre/II rejections, keep your chins up! If you're still waiting to hear back from other places and/or interviewing, go out there and crush it 🙂

It's all open except some work on the balconies (too cold to go outside anyway). The construction above the medical school is supposed to be labs/hospital space. This misled a lot of people to think that they weren't going to be done 🙂 I'd post pics but I feel like I don't want to ruin the surprise; Penn looks and feels like a completely different school now (in a good way).

PS: It's gigantic.

Just a teaser of the new med school (a small portion of it and the view from a study room) 🙂

Does anyone know when the second look weekend is?
Tentatively determined to be the weekend of April 24th per one current student.

Anyone happen to know what kind of GMAT or GRE score you need to get into the MD/MBA program at Wharton if you are a student at Perelman?

What hospitals do Penn students rotate in?
I feel like my Penn interview day had more information about rotations than any other, which was great. I'm going to take a stab at this question from memory, and I hope others will correct me.

I got the sense that almost all rotations were in Philadelphia, with the main hospitals being HUP (Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania) and CHOP (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia). Some were at Presby (Presbyterian Medical Center) and the Philadelphia VA. All four of these hospitals are right on campus, except Presby which is less than a mile away (and is the new site of the trauma center instead of HUP). There is also Pennsylvania Hospital across the river in the city center, which I believe is focused on OB. Also, some students apparently go to a hospital outside the city, I think in Reading, PA, where they get put up somewhere by the school.

A list of affiliated hospitals is here.

Does Penn want updates? I can't remember from my interview day.

Perhaps those currently applying (and have heard instructions for this cycle from their interviews) can comment, but at least when I applied (last cycle) updates were completely optional. I never sent one, and got accepted. If you have something significant to add, such as a publication, major award, or something that bolsters a weak point in your application, then I personally would send a brief update. Otherwise, just hang tight, and keep obsessively refreshing that status page 😀

Ya know, I'd better get them financial aid forms submitted quick. 'Cause tuition here is real exPENNsive, but so worth it!

They require GMAT/GRE for MD/MBA? MCAT itself is not enough?

EDIT: Nvm. See it on the website requirements.

I had a nightmare the other night:

I got an email from the admissions office saying they had sent a certified letter regarding my decision to my house, but the email didn't say what the decision was. I ran home from work to find three big envelopes, all from Penn, in my mailbox. I ripped them open and started going through everything. There were pamphlets on housing in the area, packets on clubs to join, financial aid info and about 10-15 actual letters... yet none of them said anything about whether I was in or not. I told myself "Why would they send me all of this information if I didn't get in?" but I searched through all those papers and could find an acceptance letter.

It was great.

Edit: And by great, I mean horrible. Mid-March can't get here fast enough.

I've heard that getting over 700 will probably be good enough as long as your business interest is clear and demonstrated. Although it is Wharton so maybe over 740 would be safer?

Hi all. I know this is premature, but I'm optimistically trying to plan for days off of work for Penn Preview. Does anyone have a sense for when it might be?

Subject to change. Per currently student: Penn is unlikely to hold it on the busy April 10th weekend+the school has something going on the third weekend of April. So likely April 24th.

On an unrelated note: Is it still too early for the word game of PENN? Anyone want to join me in carrying on the tradition to help passing the time?

I know there are still PENNy days left, but my heart has been PENNdering for you PENN.

Are we really doing this? I think our time is missPENNt if we don't at least wait until they disPENNse the decisions, Which can hapPENN any day now.

Penn Preview date confirmed: Apri 23-25
It looks like the decision won't be earlier than the 11th. 😳 Since I was asked to turn in some missing document by the 10th today through email. By no means this has anything to do with my own decision, purely procedural stuff.

You're taking all the susPENNse out of the situation. Though maybe it's a good thing we don't end up with a timeline for decisions stretching between now and the heat death of the universe like the Duke thread did...

Agreed. Penn does it right. No promises or definite dates other than general traffic rules every school must follow. This way the only disappointment would be in the decision itself, not how it is disPENNsed. No hard feelings either way. I like it.

It's like they've been reading House of God: "The delivery of good medical care is to do as much nothing as possible."

Or maybe they totally intend to tell us earlier but they can't promise because they know they are procrastinators. In which case they should accept me because I am one of them.

+1

Out of a mixture of utter boredom and complete neuroticism, I have compiled a list of past release dates:

2013-2014: March 12, 2014, Wednesday
2012-2013: March 13, 2013, Wednesday
2011-2012: March 12, 2012, Monday
2010-2011: March 14, 2011, Monday
2009-2010: March 15, 2010, Monday

So yeah, it seems like its going to be next Wednesday. Also, from previous thread, there seems to be an maintenance before decisions go up.

Do we think it could also be the following Monday? The portal does say by the 16th, so I wonder if that includes the possibility of them letting us know on the 16th.

last year i remember hearing from other students that penn released on the exact day the portal stated.

Edit: I lied, they stated the 14th, but no one caught them changing the day on the portal either from what I know. Let's not speculate, if we learned anything from the Duke thread its to avoid sdn until you get an email/mail

The AAMC traffic rules recommend that all schools have issued at least as many offers as there are seats in the class by March 15th, or if that is a weekend, the following Monday. (The "rules" are really guidelines with no associated enforcement, but schools try not to be too obvious about breaking them.) So the 16th could be in play.

I subscribe to the theory that the Penn staff are being cautious so as not to over-promise. If I were an oddsmaker I'd set the over-under at Wednesday 3/11 like @pharmolu said. But I wouldn't rule out Monday 3/16, especially given @minion1992's info.

FYI -- heard from a friend who's applying MSTP that the MSTP director said they plan on releasing decisions on the 14th (not sure if the same is true for MD only though...)

Hmmm. It seems odd to send them out on a Saturday. Maybe they are really being released on Friday the 13th, but they are too superstitious to say it out loud? 😉

I admire their tact.
In other news, how bad does everyone want to check out that new Henry A. Jordan center they built ? I bet second look here would be sick. All the students seemed super-chill + philly + new med school building = Awesome.

As an MSTP applicant, the news from the director said, "our acceptances are on track to be released about 10 days from now," in an email dated 3/4/15.

Crossed fingers for everyone!

kinda new to this thread but i have been looking back at Penn application threads for the past years and since 2012, penn decisions were up the wednesday before march 15. if history repeats itself, Wednesday, March 11, 2 pm is a big possibility! but then again, they switched the date on the portal from "decisions will be released by march 15" to "march 16." argh! this waiting game is killing me.
