2014-2015 SUNY Upstate Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did anyone from September NOT get a decision yet? I'm not sure if I should bother calling or just assume that I've been rejected or waitlisted and they are taking even longer to send those out.

Did anyone upload any update letters post-interview?

That's basically an LOI. I remember Dean Welsh said that communication would be welcomed and the easiest way is to upload it as a file onto your portal.

I thought a LOI was a letter expressing a commitment to attend the institution if given an acceptance. Whereas an update letter just merely states what you've been up to since the interview.

Did anyone else receive their acceptance packet yet?

I'm anxiously waiting and the web portal says not to click "yes" for the spot until we've read through the packet. Did anyone go ahead an sign their spot without getting their packet?

I could be wrong, but an LOI is basically love letters to the school that can be sent at any stage of your application, although some schools may limit further communication unless you get an II. Most schools not only have an interest in knowing what you've been up to but also that you have a sustained interest in their schools and that you know why you'll be a good fit. Personally I believe any communication that you did with the school can and should aim to serve that purpose. For example instead of just telling the school what you've been up to and wait for them to make the inference, talk to the school about why some of the things you did recently will make you a happier and more qualified student at Upstate.

Hmm, are you speaking of a "Letter of Interest" vs. a "Letter of Intent?"

It's the same thing. Btw: no one really sends post acceptance letter. You pay the deposit and you get a seat. Some school don't even have a deposit.

I don't think it's the same thing. Letter of Intent seems to be a binding commitment (on your end) whereas Letter of Interest merely expresses a desire to go to that school.

How did you format it if you don't mind me asking? Also, how long was it?

My update letter was just to let them know what I was doing during my time off- basically the stuff I did after I submitted AMCAS.

I interviewed on 9/17, and got an email telling me I'm on the high priority alternate list. I dont know how Im supposed to feel.

Yes, but I live 5 minutes from Upstate and that probably means it was sent out yesterday or today and delivered to my house in the same 24 hours. It's coming- breathe!

I just want to know if should put my deposit in now although it says to read through the packet first!

Wait to read the packet first since you have to check a box saying you read the packet before you can deposit. You will have enough time to receive the packet, read it over, and deposit to save yourself a seat.

I got the packet too. It just says the requirements to matriculate, a shopping list, and the technical standards. Worth a read through before you accept the spot. You have 15 days after you receive the packet to reserve your spot so you really have plenty of time.

Thank you for this!

Has anyone from 10/08 heard anything?

Thanks!!

Lol no, still says "congratulations..."

I'm just antsy is all. 🙂

the congratulations still have your interview date on it right? mine turned into "you have not selected an interview date at upstate"...

Yeah, my date's still there...

When did yours change?

Accepted! It got posted today on my portal. Does it let you know which campus you got accepted to on the portal though?
Interviewed 9/29 Instate.

Accepted as well! First one so I'm over the moon 🙂
I didn't get an email, just found out via portal like jpjs. For anyone else who has been accepted, is there an email that gets sent after the portal is updated?
Interviewed on 10/6, In-state. Good luck to everyone else!!

You'll get the email tomorrow! And the packet took about 4 days!

high priority isn't too bad. i hear theres usually quite some movement for upstate.

All we have to do to hold our acceptance for now is pay the deposit, right?

I actually didn't get an email at all (was accepted over a week ago). I know some people did though.

Is it an issue if you don't get an email? I haven't received mine yet and I want to know if there's any important information in that email I may be missing out on. Help somebody?!

ETA: Just got the email around 2pm today (11/17). Looks like my neuroticism was getting ahead of me 😛

I never got the email but got a packet in the mail about a week later. Paid the deposit and all. Hopefully it takes, haha.

Hi all!

Interviewing in the beginning of December, and a little nervous since it's my first and only interview as of right now. Any important tips about the MMI style interview are greatly appreciated - what do those who have interviewed at upstate believe is the best way to prepare? Also, I'm expecting it to be freezing since it's upstate NY - would it be appropriate to bring boots to take the tour of the campus in and to change into ballet flats for the interview portion/will there be somewhere I can leave a bag/is it appropriate to also carry around a purse to hold my phone and such? Lastly, has anyone stayed overnight with one of the Med Student hosts? I'm thinking about doing that so I can learn a little more about the school and a student's insight specifically.

Thank you all - I hope your app processes are going well!
