2014-2015 SUNY Upstate Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
New member here - I interviewed 11/1 and I remember the admissions officer saying that we should expect to hear back around 4-5 weeks later. I was wondering if people had been hearing back in that time frame or if it had been taking longer?

Took me 7 weeks to hear back, although they had said 3-4 weeks. Took all my willpower not to call admissions, but that didn't stop me from checking the portal daily...

Any II recently? Dying of anticipation over here! (please include complete date!)

Nearly 9 weeks via portal update.

Are update letters almost mandatory here?

I wouldn't say mandatory...

I sent in updates because I felt that they were significant to this cycle (publications; new research study; FDA drug approval for another study), and I also felt that they would help my application. The interview page did hint at providing an update post-interview, but I wouldn't say it was a requirement.

Like any medical school, I suppose they would want to know of your interest and an update is one way of showing that while you wait for the final decision.

They do ask for your class list and grades (?...I may be misremembering) (not sure if those were mandatory, since my last classes were in May)

Hope this helps! 🙂

Interviewing here next Wednesday, will be staying in a hotel down the block on Tuesday night.

Anybody else planning on the same?

Is a hold pretty much a rejection?

And does anyone get flat out rejected pre-interview? Or are they placed on hold?

hey guys and girls,

im an ms1 at upstate med from downstate, ny.
if youve got any questions, just ask me here.

weve got an exam soon so it may take me a day.
see you all soon on the interview circuit.

what have the major curriculum changes been this year? have you liked or hated them? the first two years are P/F now right? Thanks!

kazin --

i know students who were held, got ii's, and then were accepted and students who were held, got ii's, and then were rejected, as well as people who were held and did not get ii's. no rhyme or reason.

i know people who were rejected pre-ii, so i dont think the hold is upstate meds way of rejecting people.

You know people this cycle who were rejected pre ii?

hey guys, i interviewed here yesterday and thought the school was awesome. Is the application portal down for anyone else? The page isn't even loading

Apparently it's an issue with some browsers, like Chrome. Firefox works fine for me.

For those that were accepted and paid the deposit, are your portal's now blank? Mine doesn't have anything other than the processed application.

Yup
feels a little unsettling but I got my deposit receipt and a nice letter packet

Anyone not get the packet in the mail yet? Accepted 11/30. Thanks!!

How many people do they put on pre-interview hold?

If anyone hasn't read this, I highly recommend it (actually pretty sure someone already posted it earlier):

I read it prior to my interview and I found it a helpful way of understanding more about what Upstate looks for in its students. Based on their questions at the MMI, they clearly want to know more about each applicant. I would say they use the MMI format most effectively in the interview process for that purpose.

Another school (not mentioning names) explicitly said they used the MMI as a tool to mark how well you would do in your third year, and so had just scenarios and some ethics questions. It made me feel like they didn't want to know me, just how well I could play a role. But this was different; they give you an avenue to let them learn who you are! 🙂

Congrats!!! I interviewed that day as well, still have my interview page though... I'm going to sound like a neurotic premed, but do they do rejection/WLs post interview at this time? I have a hunch it won't change because I'm not accepted ):

Where you in the early or later group? I wouldn't worry about it just yet, maybe they aren't really doing it in a rigid order. And I received the email around 5:30 ish, maybe they're done for the day and you will receive your acceptance tomorrow! Stay positive!

I can't log into the admissions portal at all. Anyone else having this problem?

Afternoon - hopefully my group will hear back soon too! 🙂 Thanks for the positivity!

Try a different browser if you can't log in. It's down for me on Chrome, but works on Firefox

Yes I'm also interviewing here. I'm a bit concerned because the weather forecasts up to this point were pretty clear, but are now predicting a "significant snowstorm" for this region. I've lived in Pittsburgh and Boston before so I'm not totally unfamiliar with bad weather, but I also know that snowstorms in this area can be particularly severe and crippling due to the lake effect. Maybe some folks from the area could give me some guidance re: should I be concerned about delays flying in Tuesday? Also I was planning to take the shuttle from the airport to hotel, and from hotel to interview. Is this the best method of transportation from the airport?

Take the shuttle from the airport to the hotel because it's free and you likely aren't too pressed for time. For everything else, a cab is more reliable.

Gosh I am getting itchy I can't wait to hear back. I hope this is the week 11/3 hears back. I would just love to go to this school and its the only interview I have had so far so right now all my eggs are in this basket!

Has anyone from 10/22 afternoon heard back yet? My interview page is still availabe-making me nervous and thinking about calling

When I called, I had been waiting 7/8 weeks since my interview day. They didn't look up my file and just told me the decision would be coming "soon". I assume the same is true for you, so it might not be worth a call, for your sake or for the office of admissions! It may, however, be worth the wait (as frustrating as it is) 🙂 Good luck!

At my interview I remember the Dean of Admissions saying they try to get back to everyone by 4-5 weeks but at that time they were lagging behind by 2-3 weeks. That may explain the variations everyone's been seeing. Hang in there, guys, we'll get through it!

Accepted last Thursday by email!! Interviewed here on 10/22! This is my first acceptance so needless to say I'm really happy about this!
Congrats! Do you mind saying if you were in the morning group or the afternoon group?
