2014-2015 SUNY Upstate Application Thread

Anybody from early November here back yet?

I had the first interview date in November and haven't heard anything back yet. I really hope it comes sooner than later - the anticipation is killing me.

Hope they can't see how many times I have checked the interview page praying it has gone blank haha.

I feel you man. I would be so happy to get an acceptance here. They're the first school that gave me a chance when I hadn't heard for months and I had a great time on interview day.

Lol, that said...I probably need a link, if you'd be so kind! 🙂 (can't find it)

Would you recommend living in Geneva as a 1st year? The price tag is pretty daunting, but it is awfully convenient and all-inclusive. I'm leaning towards finding a place off-campus and going with that, but I don't know if that's recommended as a 1st year.

I've spoke to a few ms2's I know there who said just go for off campus if I can find something reasonably close. Geneva tower would be great but I can't see fronting 900/mo

Those are the dorms, right? I've heard 2 common reasons people choose not to live there:
1.) As you mentioned, they're very pricey. You can get an apartment for a lot cheaper in the surrounding area.
2.) If you're OOS, I'm pretty sure you won't be able to establish residency after the first year if you live in a dorm.

If it was an apples-to-apples comparison, I wouldn't think of living in Geneva. The thing is, Geneva's $900/mo covers utilities, it's pretty close to campus, it's unquestionably more convenient than living in an off-campus apartment. Assuming $400-500/mo to live in the surrounding areas+~$100/mo in utilities, etc., maybe it's worth it. Personally, I'm leaning against Geneva, but I can definitely see its appeal.

Never mind, it's at least like $600/mo when you're near SU/Upstate. Admittedly, this is based on a really quick glance at craigslist

1.) You're looking at off-season listing prices. Even though demand will also go back up in the summer, supply usually has a stronger influence in determining cost.
2.) Utilities will not cost $300. They represent a pretty minimal expense if you are careful about conserving water/heat.

Even if you're only saving $100-200/month, that adds up over time. People also like the peace and quiet of living in an apartment as opposed to a dorm. Also consider the sq footage of nearby apartments vs. dorm rooms...

The off-season thing is a very good point, but I doubt prices would fall too far below $600/mo for a decent place. I'm guessing utilities will come to around $100/mo, they don't need to cost $300 to make an argument for Geneva once you consider its inherent advantages. That would represent a savings of roughly $200/mo over Geneva.

The other thing is, Geneva is a pretty lame place to live. Reminded me of an adult version of my freshman dorm

I'm from Syracuse and am not even considering Geneva Tower. I am more familiar with the housing market around here because I grew up and currently live a few minutes from school. You can get a nice place in Syracuse for close to half of the price you would pay in rent at Geneva tower and I think that other off-campus housing options in the university area are a much more pleasant place to live than right next to the interstate. There's not really a big "on" or "off" season price jump.

Oh I remember housing discussions before my husband and my dogs... haha it is so easy for you all!

Has anyone who interviewed 10/29 or 11/3 heard back yet?

Interviewed 10/29 and still nothing yet. My portal still shows the "Congratulations on being selected for an interview" message. Hopefully they'll release our decisions sometime in the next week or two.

I decided to withdraw my spot from the class of 2015. A very good school, I just won't be attending for some personal reasons. Hope this will give someone some good news sooner than later.

Good luck to you!! Hope everything works out well for you! 🙂

Has anyone called the admissions office lately and have any sense of when they are going to release the next batch of decisions?

Nothing. Been praying every day!

I interview on 11/19 and they said that they normally turn around decisions in 3-4 weeks but they were 5 weeks behind at that time. With time off for Thanksgiving and Christmas-->New Years it will probably delay decisions even more. They said that our group should expect to hear back mid-January.

Of course that doesn't stop me from checking the portal daily lol

The portal tells you if you've been accepted or not?

it will and you are also supposed to get an email too, but from what people have been saying on this thread I think the portal changes first.

Darn! I was hoping to hear back before Christmas!

I wonder when the next batch will get released though as far as this thread goes - it looks like they haven't released any decisions since 12/4

What's the situation to hold one's spit after acceptance? I saw mention of a deposit, but received nothing in my packet regarding it..

I recently decided to withdraw my application and interview at SUNY Upstate. Best of luck to everyone else! 🙂
