2014-2015 Texas A&M Health Science Center Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Guess it's official now. I have to assume that they did, in fact, send out a round of acceptances, we just didn't hear about it.
I'm going with they just didn't send them out at all lololol

I feel like they sent them out too lol. Here's to waiting until match...

If I don't hear back on match day, it's definitely going to put me in a real state of worry/stress/tension seeing that this is the only school that interviewed me. Fingers crossed, and hope everyone gets accepted at least somewhere!

I pray you get in! But I was in a similar situation last year and only interviewed at one school but I didn't get in 🙁 but I reappliead and interviewed at 5 schools so if that DOES happen (and I hope it doesn't) all hope is not lost!

Why would you assume that?

It just seems really unlikely that they would only send out one round of prematches on the first day, especially when they've told people a couple times that they'd be sending out another wave. I'd sooner believe that they just didn't send any to people on SDN than I would that they lied to everyone and didn't send out any.

Yeah I hear you, but they also added two interview dates in Jan. So I think they'd release them after those, so those applicants have the chance to prematch

Yeah, like @Earl Simmons said, you can't prematch after December 31st. It's the last day for acceptances before the match; there are no acceptances sent out in the month of January (except for OOS students, of course).

I was checking last year thread around same time. I believe there were no prematches at least on SDN after Dec 15th posted.
However, What was surprising to read was some folks actually got a post interview Rejection email by Dec 31. There is good debate on that thread about what, why, etc.

My conclusion, No news is Good news if you have interviewed. TAMU acceptance to interview ratio is very high. Most certainly, All interviews are already ranked from 1 to 5xx and will be offered into match day except for January interviews.

if the application page says "under review" and i havent heard anything from them by now.. does that mean it is over? :| and do you guys think a 28 mcat is sufficient to get into this med school if i apply early next cycle?... sigh

Are you IS or OOS? Either way, no, it's not over. If you're IS, there's still the match (where many get accepted), and if you're OOS, you could still get in. Admittedly it's less likely if you're OOS, but definitely still possible.

i also havent gotten an invite yet for II and am IS. thanks for the reply 🙂

I have a similar MCAT score, interviewing late January at A&M, this is also not my only interview. I also took the MCAT late, so apply early next cycle & be confident!

My sincere advise to you is to retake the MCAT after solid preparation and reapply next year. Work on any other weakness in your application and get better LORs.

Hey did anyone who has interviewed but hasn't heard anything yet send their Fall 2014 transcript? How do we know if they received them & should we email the school to notify them that we did?

not sure if i can prepare for the new mcat in time to apply early :| really don't think i can make it with 28 mcat if i applied early?

A 28 is an accepted score. It just means every other portion of your app must be flawless. I know ppl with higher Mcats who got no interviews and ppl with 27s who received multiples.

If you apply with a 28 I would also be open to TCOM as that is about their average MCAT score

Just applying early with 28 is not a big factor in itself. There are successful candidates with 28 MCAT but they then have solid EC, LOR, GPA, sGPA. If you cannot retake a 28, I would also suggest you be open to DO schools. Next year I believe one more DO school is opening in Texas.
If you are URM, it helps

I'd also like to caution you not to bank on DO schools just because they have a lower average MCAT. I was actually very interested in TCOM but did not get an interview there, although I interviewed at UTMB, A&M, and UT Southwestern.

Has anyone here been invited to Temple's interview orientation in the morning and then relocated to Round Rock for the interviews on the same day?
If so, what were your experiences like at the Round Rock campus?

Very easy. You get plenty of time to drive, and they send you out before the army talk (so if you've interviewed at TTEP or UTHSCSA and heard it before you don't need to sit through it again). The people at Round Rock were great, very accommodating.

any OOSers hear back that interviewed in november?
This is my first post on this A&M page. I am OOS, interviewed in Oct for the md/phd, received acceptance email before Christmas and just waiting for the letter in the mail which should have been sent this week now that everyone is back in the office.

ayy I forgot about this place until I saw some people interviewing on 1/8.

If you already have prematches - go enjoy your life, for real. If you're a senior, don't slack too much!
If you're still waiting, wait for the match. A lot of people match. If you don't match, the waitlist goes on till the summer and there is movement so don't fret!

As always, message me or post questions here and I'll try to answer

I interviewed on 1/8. Love the school!

Hello, everyone! First-time poster here.

According to "Information for Applicants" book that was handed out during interviews, the class size was 200 in 2013 (pg. 17). However, I noticed that there were only 126 residency matches that year (pg. 24). What happened to the other 74 students? Did I miss any information that could explain this?

Perhaps their class sizes have gotten larger?

They didn't mention anything about the January interview date's match chances vs waitlist did they? I'm interviewing on 1/15 and for some reason I'm worried that they're interviewing my group strictly to fill their waitlist. Again, that's not based on anything I've heard. Just wondering.

Congrats on getting an interview! When did you get an interview invite @typoncho? When did you submit your secondary?

They made it clear we absolutely still had a chance at matching.

matching or pre-matching? I would understand prematching, since that window is gone, but I find it unlikely they would say you couldn't match. They said they do a rank system, so if you have a kickass interview you'd be up near the top with those who interviewed at the beginning or middle of the season who also did well.

Right. I said that we did have a chance at matching. Of course it's too late to prematch, though.

Are you already able to rank them on TMDSAS? I'll have 5 days after my interview to rank them by the 21st lol.
Nope, I can't rank them yet. I'm so worried about that with Southwestern! I interview there on the 17th.

Question. Maybe I don't fully understand the diff. B/w prematching and matching, but is it possible to match at more than one school if you didn't prematch? For example I've had two tx interviews, and I didn't prematch here but TT in Lubbock I just recently interviewed there, so can you match at both...? Is it different from prematching? Gracias!

You can't hold more than one match. All of us end up with one acceptance coming out of match. However, if you matched at your second choice school, but not your first, you can end up still being placed on the wait list for your top choice. If you make it off the wait list, I'm a little unsure if you are automatically pulled out of your lower ranked school or if you can choose which to attend.

To "prematch" just means for a TX resident to be accepted early (between Nov 15-Dec 31). TX residents can hold multiple prematch/acceptances up until January 21st before they decide to only hold onto one of them (since after the match process you can only come out with 1 acceptance).

Match day is on February 2nd. The way the match process works is you rank each school you interviewed at in order of your preference and you will "match" (be accepted) to the highest ranked school on your list that accepts you. In your case, you would rank A&M and Tech Lubbock on your TMDSAS application. If, for example, you rank A&M #1 and Tech Lubbock #2, match to Tech Lubbock, and are waitlisted at A&M...then on February 2nd you are accepted and attending Tech Lubbock for the time being. IF, at a later date, A&M decides to accept you off their waitlist, because you ranked them higher on your initial ranking list, you will have the option - typically a 2 week period - to accept or decline A&M's acceptance off their waitlist. If you accept, you would attend A&M, if you decline, you still have your Tech Lubbock acceptance and would matriculate there. Vice versa also if you decided to rank Tech Lubbock #1 and A&M #2. If you match to your #1 choice school, then your remaining list of schools you ranked on your application are meaningless - you automatically decline anything under your top ranked school (the rest) that you match to.

Question: does Texas A&M not have a fafsa code? I can only see the undergraduate college on there.

" 1. Complete the FAFSA (TAMHSC School Code = 00494800) "

http://www.tamhsc.edu/finaid/loans/applying-to-direct-loans.html

When do we need to start filling FAFSA out for whatever school we're going to?

Edit: this code can't be found on fafsa.ed.org but that's the code on TAMHSC website so I'm not sure now. Maybe you apply under Texas A&M University? This link states for professional programs at Texas A&M "If you are seeking financial assistance, make sure your FAFSA lists Texas A&M University as a school to receive your information electronically. Texas A&M University's federal school code is 003632" :
