2014-2015 The University of Toledo Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
@Omppu27, @BengaliBrat thank you both for the replies and info! I will definitely see if I can find that video and check out last year's thread. I have heard of several schools changing OOS status to IS status after a year, but I wasn't sure how typical that was for schools or if Toledo fell into that category or not. I am very happy to hear that they in fact do. 🙂 Thank you again, and congratulations to the both of you on your acceptances!

Does anyone know if Toledo typically awards their scholarships before the deadline to pick a school?

Accepted! Interviewed 2/9, IS, 3.7cGPA, 3.6sGPA, 27, 32 retake.

Haha so much for relaxing for the next 6 weeks. You must have really impressed them! Nice work! Was your acceptance via email?

Thanks! I was definitely surprised when I got the email this morning. What's funny is this was one of my worst interviews... I thought I was visibly nervous, stumbling my words, etc. Just goes to show that you never know how things will turn out!

Do accepted students get the background check email like right after the acceptance email?

Just got an II yesterday! Didn't even realize they would interview this late. Picked April 6th for my interview date. I'll have to touch up on my interview skills! Haven't had one since November. Esp the ethical questions. This thread has been very helpful!

Complete at beginning of August. LizzyM score of ~68-69 with postbac masters degree.

@brikmac, congratulations! The interviews here tend to focus on "your journey toward a medical career," but there are also some ethical questions. Good luck!

Just got put on the alternate list today. I've looked at threads from multiple cycles in the past, but does anyone know the chances of being accepted off the waitlist? This kinda stings since it is the only in state school at which I interviewed.

I interviewed 2/9 BTW.

Only an impression, not a fact, but I have heard from several sources that there IS significant waitlist movement. People have a pretty good idea of which choices are open to them, and they can choose only one. I am hoping for the best for you!

Did they mention how many spots were left? Hopefully you hear some good news in the future about the waitlist.

They did not mention, but I do know what interviews go into April. Toledo was my first interview (I had 3 total) and the only one in-state.

In hindsight I suppose I was a bit more nervous, but my second interview also really confused me. My interviewer picked out a book that I had read my sophomore year and adapted it into a feminism debate. Maybe I should have politely insisted that it would be not be appropriate for a med school interview. Do you have any thoughts?
I think that's one of those questions/discussions where you just have to do your best to get through. It doesn't seem like something you could have prepared for.

I have been creeping through the previous 2-3 application cycles and to me it seems like nearly the top 1/3 of the waitlist ends up getting accepted. Also I have read that over the past few years Toledo has been receptive to letter of intent emails (after interview). So keep that in mind come May when waitlist movement begins. I wish you the best of luck!

@Waterskier15 Thank you, it means a lot! I saw that you interviewed on 2/26 - how did it go? Have you been accepted elsewhere?

@abcjmz I think both of my interviews went well but I guess we will see in a few weeks. Either way, I was super impressed with the school! I have been accepted to Midwestern University in Downers Grove but nothing In State.

Any accepted students begin to look into housing?

Accepted this morning. 🙂 OOS. I was accepted to my state school last week, and I thought it would be a no brainer decision, but now I'm starting to have second thoughts. :/ gosh dangit Toledo.

congrats @docdoc14! i'd say that's a pretty good problem to have! best of luck making your decision!

Thank you so much! They both are incredible programs and I consider myself extremely lucky. As a reapplicant, it's a very weird, but very welcome feeling haha. You said you interviewed on the 19th? Are you the girl that I was talking to that is going to be joining the bowling team?

@Waterskier15 and @docdoc14, congratulations. UT has a lot to offer and (judging from my interview day), a good community feeling.

Thank you! The community feeling is phenomenal. Out of all the places I interviewed at, the folks at Toledo were by far the kindest and most laid-back. That is including both the faculty, early admissions kids that were accepted already, and the peers that were in my interview group. It brings a small tear to my eye haha 😉

It's so funny that you bring up bowling, @docdoc14 , because I am volunteering this weekend at a bowling event to raise money for a charity. (Too complex to explain. . .) But I am, sadly, not joining any bowling team. UT was my first interview, way back in the fall. I am still happy about your good news, though, although I am not an Alley Cat! 🤣

Does anybody know what Toledo's grading system is like? Is it graded, pass/fail, etc? I forgot to ask this question on my interview day.

99% sure it's some format of pass/fail and then the clinical years are letter graded.

I actually found the policy on UT's Website. It wasn't very specific and it looks like there are some graded curricular blocks and some pass/fail curricular blocks. I'm not really sure which is the majority. Here is the link to the policy: http://www.utoledo.edu/policies/academic/college_of_medicine/pdfs/3364-81-04-013-01 Medical student evaluation in the four year curriculum.pdf

I can't speak much for the grading of clinical years, but the blocks in the first two years are all graded on a honors, high pass, pass, and fail scale. Electives are generally pass/fail, depending on whether or not you fulfill the requirements.

How long does it usually take to receive a message confirming an interview date? I emailed last week about signing up for a date but I haven't heard anything... should I call? Just want to make sure I haven't missed any significant correspondence! Super excited to interview and visit the campus 🙂

@taligator I received a confirmation email within a day or so. I would definitely email or maybe call the admissions office to confirm.

Does anybody know if UT has any computer requirements? Does the school prefer Mac or PC? I emailed the admissions office this morning and they literally told me to ask current students on the facebook page. So I am assuming that they do not have a preference.

Anybody going to second look? I unfortunately won't be able to make it. A run-down of how it went would be greatly appreciated 🙂

Here's the recommendation for general students - UTCOM doesn't have any specific requirements. Probably around 50-60% of the first years have Macs, so you can have either and it will work with any programs you will need. Quite a few of the people with PC's have touchscreens or tablets, so that's an option too.
