2014-2015 Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think I'm a little late to the game, but for the sf86 form where do I get extra pages for the employment part?

Any updates on calls?
I'm curious too, I wonder if people have been receiving calls but just not posting about it on this thread. I'm playing the waiting game from the Sept 25th interview and still haven't received anything via snail mail regarding wait list vs. alternate.

Early on this thread, @sdbolthead24 said that September interviewees shouldn't worry yet.

But to be honest, I AM worried. Apparently, the class was 1/3 full as of LAST Thursday. That means 50-60 people have already been accepted by last Thursday. Only around 100 people interviewed in September.

We are the forgotten children of September...

Hey, that sounds like a pretty good title for a movie or something....

Also, be prepared to answer questions about leadership experiences you've had. Some form of a leadership type question came up on both my interviews.

If you don't know already, check out the SDN Interview Feedback results for USUHS found here:
http://schools.studentdoctor.net/school/usuhs/survey/26#survey-result

You can find questions that were asked in previous interviews. It'll give you an idea of questions that tend to be repeatedly asked throughout the years.

Thanks I was trying to find that link!

@Premedspouse, one other thing that just occurred to me as I think back on my interview day - the wife who came with her husband mentioned she had been in touch with several people from the USUHS spouses' club. You might want to consider contacting the admissions office and asking for the contact info for someone from that group. They might be willing to either meet with you in the afternoon (when you'd have the most downtown since this is while your spouse will be doing actual interviews) or at least answer questions and give you suggestions of what to do during the day if you opt not to go to campus.

My phone is disappointingly silent...
Sean, my man....I'm a fellow 9/25 interviewee and have not gotten that call either. They said we will hear back in 4-6 weeks. It's been 4 weeks, 4 days. Let's funnel that nervous energy into optimism. Keep your head up and good news will come soon.

My brother! Still waiting for that call...

But increasingly I am beginning to feel like those hapless souls that wailed in the fridge ocean after the Titanic sank...waiting for an absolution that will never come.

Got an ii today for 12/4. re-applicant. Waitlisted last year. Ultra excited because USUHS is my top choice.
This cycle I've been off and on the forums, sorry. I just skimmed through 10 pages right now. 🙂

Reapplicants- if you were cleared by Dodmerb last year, do you have to redo any of the stuff? I recall receiving a letter stating I did not have to, but there was no information on this on the pre-interview documents.

Also, I wouldn't worry too much if you interviewed in September. You'll get in. I interviewed 10/24 last year, and that seemed to be the transition from acceptances to waitlist because some in my interview group got in and others waitlisted.

Are you absolutely sure? To my knowledge, last cycle, the class wasn't full until the end of November. Waitlists are only given when the class is full, so unless the schools accepts EVERYONE who interviews in September and October, there's no way the class would be full by the end of October.[/QUOTE]

Hope so because I'm interviewing tomorrow and id be pretty bummed if the class was already full!

The dean had mentioned something to that effect this year when I had interviewed

That being said, I was Navy. Hence, perhaps only Navy list was filled at that time. Perhaps I just wasn't competitive enough. Who knows?

Not gonna lie, I've been checking this page every so often to see if calls were made. This is my number one choice as well. I interviewed 9/25. Really getting worried but I gotta stay hopeful. Solidarity Sean.

Haha I'm entertained by the titanic analogies Sean, is your preference for service branch Navy by chance?

Ok guys this is getting a little bit melodramatic. Hopefully, I can offer some perspective to calm your neuroticism (looking @Sean Lee).

The 8th out of ~24 interview sessions will be going on today assuming that interviews end on 12MAR2015, which is a conservative estimate. So filling 1/3 of the class is reasonable at this point. When I interviewed in 2012 spaces for AF, NAVY and PHS filled in DEC and early JAN. ARMY had 6 available spots when I interviewed in early FEB. The numbers change but this seems to be consistent year to year.

If you get put on HOLD status do not fret. This simply means the admissions committee is deferring a final decision until they have a better feel for the applicant pool. Many of my friends went from HOLD(SEP or OCT)-> WAITLIST(FEB or MAR)->Acceptance(usually in May). This takes time. Keep in mind since 2007 the applicant pool to USUHS has increased 60-70%.

The applicant pool is also getting more competitive.

In 2007 average MCAT for students accepted into the SoM was 30. The average GPA was 3.5.

In 2012 average MCAT for students accepted into the SoM was 31.1. The average GPA was 3.5.

In 2013 average MCAT for students accepted into the SoM was 31.3. The average GPA was 3.6

The good news is that despite the increased competitiveness the acceptance rate has remained ~55% meaning you are more likely than not to be accepted after the interview.

To summarize:

If you have an interview date coming up, Practice up and bring your A-game.

If you have already interviewed, be patient and find a good project in which to channel your neuroticism so should you be waitlisted you can send in an awesome update letter in April.

If you are just waiting, rest assured that this is a long process and takes until the summer to finalize everything.

Everything he said coincides with what you know, you're just looking at it differently. If the class is full at the end of November and it takes 4-6 weeks to review applications and make a decision after interviews, that would be mid/end October interviews taking the last spots, which is the same thing he said.

Also keep in mind that's the initial fill, then you have people that withdraw, get accepted elsewhere etc, hence the waitlist movement. Remember that USUHS waitlist is not the same as many other schools, so a spot waitlist is still a very high chance of getting in.

And I don't mean this disrespectfully, but I'm going to have to take off my alerts for this thread because your stress is stressing me out lol.

Yep. Spot on. I was an early December NAVY waitlister and some people in my interview group got in late November.

I'm also a slightly older applicant, 3 years out of college. Never really was a stresser, but I feel like I have matured a lot to the point where I view getting into medical school as the trivial point. I'm not going to lie. I kind of chuckled at the stress comment. Sean if you really want to stress, think about the future- 4 years of medical school, the lifelong committment you are making right now at about probably 1/4 of your lifespan, and all the other passions you are foregoing for medicine are things you probably should be stressing about.

I like to exercise when I'm stressed out. Try going for a heavy weightlifting session. I guarantee you will feel like you are flying and on top of the world afterwards.

Interviewed today. Dean Saguil confirmed that navy was full but still doing wait list spots while the other services still had open positions. Awesome day, BTW. Was apprehensive that military would not be a good fit for me but I think the interview really showed me that I would be very happy as a military physician. Put air force as first choice but noted that I would be equally happy in anything but the public health service

Are you kidding?!?!?! Navy is ALREADY FULL????

I don't know about frequent but I know at least in the past it has been checked

Are you talking about admissions committees in general, or USUHS specifically?

I am assuming that there will be some phone calls tomorrow that wraps up the final September interviewees. Crossing my fingers!

Yup. Today they said the last committees were wrapping up the end of September/moving on to beginning of October

It will be before the setting of Friday's sun that our fates will be decided.

I got the call from LTC Saguil this morning for an Army acceptance! I interviewed in September!

I have no prior military service history, but I want to make military medicine my career. USUHS is my first choice, and I am so proud and honored to have been accepted!

And I want to share something with those who are still waiting/those who will interview soon. While my application did have a lot going for it, it also has some rather significant flaws. My numbers are mostly competitive for USUHS, but not every component is above (or at) the school average. But despite these deficiencies, USUHS still gave me the opportunity to join its class, and I am beyond grateful for their decision. So if there are certain aspects on your applications that you feel are less than optimal, do NOT worry! USUHS does look at the entire picture (not just stats and the typical EC checklist)!

Best of luck to everyone out there!

Sitting in an airport waiting for a plane that seems like it will never come so I thought I do a more comprehensive post reflecting on my visit.
1) The people here are absolutely amazing. I didn't think it was possible to have such a warm welcome at an interview day. I was so impressed that Dean Saguil took the time to chat with the interviewees. My interviewers were also incredibly friendly
2) I think the most impressive part of the facilities was the simulation center. It seems like usuhs prepares students really really well for their jobs as physicians and leaders
3) the most striking aspect of the whole day was when I realized after the interview that all of the people (either alums/faculty or students) had the demeanor that they would be very calm and level headed in a crises situation. I don't know if that is something that usuhs selects for in its class or trains in its students, but it was noticeable and different from any other school I've interviewed at so far. Usuhs had moved very, very, very far up my list because this is the type of physician I want to be and I think usuhs can help me get there.

Tldr: awesome place! Hope I get in and see all of you guys next year! Also, sorry for any egregious spelling/grammar mistakes. Working on my phone

you should only be sorry for using the word egregious before my 3rd cup of coffee 😉

I absolutely love USUHS as well and am hoping for positive results in about a month!

I definitely agree with you on that 😀

He didn't happen to mention if all the Navy spots were full did he? lol. I'm still hoping my release letter ends up saying I can switch services just in case.
