@myleftorpatientleft? How long does it take for your conditional acceptance to turn into an unconditional acceptance?

This was two years ago so the exact details/timing im not too sure of, but ill give it a go. There are two main things: a) your acceptance (probably the biggest factor) and b) your health approval. You need to be a "go" on both these ends. The health approval can be delayed be a couple of things like scheduling the screen or the need for waivers. IYour health records then get sent to a central office where theyre processed. Once they are processed, youll receive a letter/ you can check online after a period of time (therell be an estimate), telling you that you are medically cleared to join the military. Without delays this should take about 2 weeks. Once you are a go on both these ends then youre basically home free. After this, Itll probably take a month to get the paperwork that you have to sign. Make a copy of all the things you sign and save it in a folder. This will now be your military folder.

From my personal experience, I interviewed in October, got accepted into USUHS in december and i believe had my medical screening done in November (?). When i got back to school from Christmas break, the time sensitive documents (i.e unconditional acceptance) were already in my mailbox. I had to give the admissions office a call to let em know i was away when the letter came and they were more than accomodating. Again, this was some time ago, but i think this was the relative timing of things.

Thanks! I was medically cleared by DoDmerb before my interview. So now I guess I just have to wait for the paperwork to process i.e. about a month?

I was medically cleared already, but how long will the SF-86 security clearance take? I heard that BOTH the physical and the background check have to be cleared before an unconditional offer can be given.

This is really helpful! Thanks for detailing the process. So do I need to have my medical records ready to share or do they only ask for them if I have something that needs a waiver? If I need any waiver (don't know yet...), do I have to gather the records or do they request them directly from the physician?

Anyone know where there was no call this week? Does this mean that they've finished accepting all the September interviewees, taking a break this week, and moving on to the October interviewees next week? Very few people from Sept. 25 have heard anything.

Sean, remember that SDN is a relatively small subset of the total applicant pool. There could very well have been calls this week, just to people who don't post here. I'm sure more calls are forthcoming for September folks!

You are most likely right. Argh....with every passing week my chances get lower. I'll wait one more week before assuming a wait list or worse.

I hate to say it man but you gotta relax. Don't log on SDN for a few days. I know from the interview yesterday that the class is about 1/3 full and packages get processed at different rates following the interviews depending on how fast interviewers return materials etc. try to get your mind off it 🙂

So maybe September interviewees fill the first third, October the second third, an November the final third. People say that by the end of November, the class is full. The admissions committee is probably going to focus on October interviewees going forward, while picking off any stragglers from September.

I don't think they do it that way. Realize that end of November is only mid October interviews. Also I know it's easy to say not to stress. I'm stressing too. Just trying to say stay sane 🙂

What are the chances of success if one's on the wait-list?

good, alot of years they go through everyone on the waitlist, last year I think 2/3 of it.

That's good to hear. But I heard that waitlists are only given if the applicant is perfectly good but there isn't spots left. There are still plenty of spots left right now, so I don't think I'll qualify for a waitlist. If I am perfectly good, then I would just be straight accepted since there are still spots left.

I may have to shift my expectation to an alternate, if not a hold. Just trying to be realistic.

I got accepted on Thursday and interviewed on the 18th of September. Don't lose hope.

Stats are good (average MCAT and above average GPA)...but I have a little different package than the majority of the applicants because of the job I have in the military. I will remain in the AF.

This post's a little long, but I've broken it down so you can look at the parts that are of interest to you:
Class closeness. It's mostly by year. At the beginning of each school year, you'll most likely hang out with the people you go to basic with (because you've spent a month with them. BTW this is not like "basic-basic" i.e young kid joining the military, so nothing like the movies where there's a lot of yelling. You'll still learn the military stuff, but there's a medical focus at least for the army. Oh and you get to do cool things like run field hospitals, do medivacs, shoot, and land-nav).

Something unexpected. I didn't realize that I was only going to be here for 1.5 years. With the revamped curriculum, we cover the preclerkship material in 18 months. My class is heading for our rotations all around the country (another great opportunity) in January. This gives us more clinical experience. Admittedly, I had my reservations about this- specifically with regards to Step 1- but the first class that did this curriculum crushed their step 1 so it's looking good so far. Hopefully it's more than just that class haha.

Negatives. Very few if any. You'll have to fill out paper work if you want to leave a certain radius (I think it's like 300 miles? Top border is New York City if that helps- i.e you can visit NYC without a pass). It's not really a problem as you can get the paper work filled out pretty easily and if you do it a week in advance you should be good. Also something that a few might consider a negative is some of the additional military stuff we have to do (i.e disaster response planning, mil history, etc.). Personally, I love those things as they're a welcome break from constant medicine, plus it makes one a more well rounded physician. Admittedly it can seem like a drag if it's on the week leading up to an exam, but you'll manage.

While we're on the topic of extra training, I just want to share how great this extra training is. We see see a lot of ultrasound (relatively speaking), we have tons of patient/sim patient interactions, we're now certified in ACLS (something most other students do in their internship year; we do it twice before internship!), we learn a lot of emergency-med/trauma skills even in our first year (like intubating, starting IVs, chest tubes, needle decompressions, etc), and we get to partake in field exercises where we get to do things like learn combatives and how to maneuver obstacle courses. The training is really unparalleled and if you're passionate about something you'll find that you can get training in that (i.e me and a whole bunch of students are already doing FLS- fundamentals of laproscopy- training at Walter Reed. This is something most people do in their surgical residency!). This is one of my absolute favorite things about this school and can go on and on, but hopefully you get the gist. I didn't even get to summer experiences!

Finally Admin/Prof Drama. Not a lot of that here, if there even is any. The professors are all very friendly and extremely willing to help. Most go above and beyond, but obviously you have to reach out to them (although module directors will reach out to you if they see your struggling).

Random question here, but do you or anyone you know have experience having a pet while at USUHS? I have a dog and am wondering how it's going to work with traveling for rotations and such. He will go with my parents if it's not feasible, but I'd like to hear perspective from someone...

I interviewed 9/18! I ranked army and PH as my first choice, so I have gotten army but they decide PH in November, so I would pick between the two then if I got it!

Have you gotten your letter in the mail yet? I have a similar situation (PH first, Air Force second), and am wondering if I haven't gotten the letter because they haven't confirmed the branch yet...

The only hope I have is that it seems a majority of people who interviewed on 9/25 haven't heard anything yet. So there's still hope.

Yah id rather be in your shoes, i interviewed 9/18 and havent heard back yet i interviewed And got waitlisted last year and was told if a spot were available it would have been given to me. Feeling kinda bummed since 3 or so ppl have posted here from my interview dAte witth acceptance cAlls. Still feel hopeful tho!!

hi all! So I'm wondering do I need to fill out the SECNAV-5512 form? I am interviewing in October and am active duty already with a secret security clearance...

For those of you that have already interviewed, what kind of questions did they ask you in the interview? (I tried skimming the thread for some, so sorry if I'm being repetitive).

Be prepared to answer why you want to be a military doctor. Make sure you have an understanding of the differences between civilian and military medicine.

For those who have interviewed already, were there many (if any) guests accompanying interviewees? I noticed there is a portion that the guests cannot view, but it appears that it's okay for guests to come for the other parts in the morning. I will be traveling to D.C. with my husband, but am hesitant to come as a guest if I am likely to be the only one. Thoughts? Would it be worthwhile for me to attend as well? Thanks for your insight!

There was only one, and I believe it was an applicant's father? It was a little awkward that he was there, but I personally feel it was that way because it was a parent not a spouse or significant other. I think a spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend would be much less noticeable. I will say that I'd leave it up to your husband. If you being there will make him nervous don't go 🙂. If my wife had come with me I probably would have been more stressed, but that's a personal thing to me.

i sent my application in 4 weeks ago but I haven't heard back yet. is this normal because it says the application should be reviewed within 3-4 weeks? I'm getting nervous.

your secondary was sent in 4 weeks ago or your primary?

if secondary, email your admissions contact to verify receipt of your application. You also need to let them know if all letters are in so they can process.

If primary, I would also email or call admissions and ask if your application was received, as secondaries from USUHS seem to be automatic, prior to any screening.

Premedspouse,

My partner came with me and apparently blended in well enough to hide from Glycerine. 😉 The only other guest was a parent. Everyone there is *ridiculously* nice, so if your husband goes alone, he will be well taken care of. If you go, do be prepared to be the odd one out, all day long. Lots of waiting around, but my partner didn't mind, and had a nice, chill, informative day.

That being said, I did find myself wondering if he was getting lost/into trouble/over-sharing while he was out of my sight...

😛

haha! Didn't even notice he was there. I knew you said he came with you to DC though. Was he in all the info sessions?

Sort of reinforces my point though that someone of the same general age group won't be obvious 🙂

I believe it was about 6 weeks after that that I received an interview invite.

edit: scratch that, I think it was 5 weeks from when I received confirmation that I was complete, but it was 2 months and 2 days after I send in my secondary that I received and interview invite.

Anyone who interviewed in September still haven't heard back?

Also, be prepared to answer questions about leadership experiences you've had. Some form of a leadership type question came up on both my interviews.

If you don't know already, check out the SDN Interview Feedback results for USUHS found here:
http://schools.studentdoctor.net/school/usuhs/survey/26#survey-result

You can find questions that were asked in previous interviews. It'll give you an idea of questions that tend to be repeatedly asked throughout the years.

Sorry if this question is already answered but do anyone know if we'll receive a conformation from Ms. Larhonda Baker regarding the SECNAV form?

I submitted mine by mail for my interview on November 6 and I received confirmation that it was received around 1 week later. So yes, we are supposed to get confirmation. If you don't receive confirmation, I believe they prefer that we call so you can get access to the base on your interview day. Hope this helps!

Do October interviewers need to turn in that form?? Is it all interviewers??

There was one spouse on my interview day. I don't think she was bored or felt out of place at all. Also, at least on my interview day, they had replaced the smaller vans that used to transport people to the simulation center with a bus, so everyone got to go, including guests. So the only part the guest was sitting around for was while her husband was in the actual interviews.

Yah

i nterviewed 9/18 i emailed saguil saying i was concerned and he said to not be concerned and i am "A ok"

Oh so you emailed Dean Saguil and he told you not to be alarmed that you haven't heard back yet?

Thanks for the insight! He says that he doesn't care either way, but I'll be sure to be intentional about being as stress-free and as supportive as possible. That's a great point!
