2014-2015 Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was just curious since it is provided for you if it was quality equipment or things that would definitely need to be replaced by the time your clinical rounds came around. Just a curious applicant 😉

I'm glad to hear that things seem to be pretty good, because if two students didn't have any issues with the equipment it can't be bad.

Thanks guys.👍
It's Welch-Allyn BP cuff, otoscope/ophthalmoscope, etc and an ADC stethoscope. It's not for clinicals, but for the P Exam class in Fundamentals. Bag not included.

The only necessary piece of equipment is the stethoscope. I would recommend getting a better one for rotations.

lol their average MCAT is like, 30. I'm seeing all of these 33s and 34s applying and it is making me nervous
SAX, it's going to be okay. All those people with 33 and 34 MCAT scores have become blind as a bat from studying so they will flunk the eye exam, and they are so weakened by the whole application process they won't be able to do the required number of push-ups and sits up. They know this, and are so depressed about it, they eat donuts all day and will therefore not meet the weight requirements...

Literally LOL. I would "like" this more if I could. 🙂

Has anyone with interviews been able to login at dodmets.com? I called to give my social last week, but it's still telling me my login is invalid.

Did you just get an II?

That was a really awesome post Van LOL. what is required for pushups and situps and pull ups and mile and stuff? Ive tried but I can't find that information anywhere

Got one with the first group last week- didn't get around to posting then.

Congrats!

Do you mind sharing your stats and when your secondary app was received/forwarded for review?

I honestly can't remember...sometime in early July. From reading your posts, you need to take a deep breath. Constantly checking other people's stats isn't going to get you an interview any sooner. For what it's worth, I had a >30 and >3.8, but seriously, you're going to drive yourself crazy checking here all the time.

I received a mail package today regarding my DoDMERB scheduling. You have to wait 5-7 days before they have your social security in their system in order for you to log in.

For anyone scheduled for interview, do you know if you must complete the DodMERB BEFORE your interview date? I know USUHS page says you just need to schedule it before the interview and can have it done later. But the instruction that I received today in the mail says that I need to have it done within six weeks, which will be before my interview date on 9/11.

No, you don't have to have it complete before the interview, you only need a scheduled date for the physical. However if you already have it done, I think it shows a prompt effort and a more genuine interest in USUHS, and further expedites USUHS' decision on your application.

If they have given you confusing or contradicting information I would contact your admissions adviser, goodluck!

I got two quick questions for people with IIs.

1) The email says that we'll receive another email later regarding DoDMERB scheduling. So I am assuming that I am going to get another email shortly after today?

2) We are required to respond to the II email ASAP. Should we reply to the email, or send another email regarding confirmation? What did you guys do?

Good luck to everyone applying to USUHS! I think keeping up with this thread is going to give me high blood pressure lol

II this morning! Also for late September! My very first II, so I'm super excited about this!

Now I've just got to get my weight down a few pounds for the physical...off for a run! 🙂

The email says that you'll receive additional info about scheduling, but if you look through the documents on the website (linked in the first paragraph of the II email), the interviewee letter provides a phone number to call to provide DoDMERB with your SSN, which is the first step to getting into their system and getting the scheduling process rolling.

Not sure about whether you reply or send another email; I haven't responded yet, as I may need to reschedule the date, so I'm waiting to confirm until later today.

To confirm your attendance or reschedule, just contact Ms. Ferrell. I confirmed my date and she responded very quickly! Hope this helps!

Here's some information regarding the physical exam.

As soon as you get your invitation email, call Ms. Wilhelmina Ramseur; her number can be found on the interview materials site of USUHS (click on the interviewee letter). Basically, you'll give her your social security number and last name over the phone, and she'll give you the DoD website that you'll use to sign up for the physical. However, you must wait 5-7 business days after giving your SSN to Ms. Ramseur before signing up on DoD; the system needs time to get your SSN and last name uploaded. Do not wait for any other emails before scheduling your physical.

Hope this helps!

I came across online that there is minimum height/weight to pass for the DoDMERB. It seems like I am 7 lbs under their minimum weight limit for my height (female). Does anyone know if they strictly enforce this minimum weight criteria? If they do, I am worried that I need to gain some pounds ASAP before my scheduled physical in 3 weeks.... ;(

I would imagine so...packing on pounds won't be as hard as those of us who need to lose a few!! Also, can you confirm it's dodmets.com? When did you call to give her your social? Mine is STILL saying invalid login...

I would be safe and start gaining weight.

Also, do you have any idea what we have to do to pass the physical? I was looking at the link provided above, and it seems pretty rigorous. I think we need to get 60% in all the categories (pushup, situp, 2-mile) in order to pass. Can someone who's been through the process comment on it?

I thought that this physical was just the medical clearance (height/weight, eyes, hearing, medical history, etc) and that the PFT, which is service-specific, was done over the summer at training? I could be completely mistaken about that, though...someone with more knowledge of the process have any input?

Okay thanks. I would hate to gain weight on purpose but I guess I have no other choice... ;(

Yes it's http://www.dodmets.com. You have to give your social security to Ms. Ramseur 5-7 days prior to logging in. Also, check your snail mail to see if you have received a mail from DoDMERB. The mail has detailed instructions regarding how to complete the process. To give you a basic timeline, I received my II on 7/28. I called Ms. Ramseur on 7/29 to give her my social security and I received the mail from DoDMERB on 8/1. It says you need to call the authorized providers within 5 days of receiving the mail to schedule your optometric and medical exams. So if you are still not able to log into the dodmets website, I would call Ms. Ramseur and ask.

This is good to know. I am assuming that you didn't give you physical address when you called and that the school already has our addresses from the AMCAS primary?

And are we supposed to receive postal mail regarding the physical? I thought all the sign-ups occur online.

I think I am in trouble. I can barely do just 10 pushups....am I screwed?

When you log into the website, you are already assigned authorized providers in your location. The postal mail also indicates the same authorized providers assigned to you. I had to call DoDMERB to change my optometrist because when I called to schedule my optometric exam, they said the doctor will be out of town until late September.

But you have to wait 7 business days before you could log in, right? It seems in your case, you got the snail mail before the 7 business days.

Don't worry. I am in the same boat. We have some time to work on our pushups, sit-ups, and 2mile-runs until next summer if we get accepted into USUHS. I believe this DoDMERB physical is just to clear your medical history and see if you have any prominent illnesses/problems that might keep you away from joining the military like @LaceyMD says.

Actually I received the snail mail on 8/4 but it was postmarked on 8/1. So yes, it seems like DoDMERB sent the snail mail within 3 days of processing my social security in their system.

Oh really? So we don't have to pass all the pushup, situp, and running requirements at this first physical?

Can a current student provide more info about the physical? More specifically, I have the following questions.

1) Will the initial offer of acceptance be dependent on whether or not we pass the physical?
2) Will we have to do all the required pushups, situps, and 2-mile run during the initial physical?

I know that we are encouraged to complete the physical before the interview, but I am afraid I am going to need more than a month to get into proper shape! I can barely do 8-10 pushups right now!

Can a current student please answer this?: I am prior Air Force enlisted and cannot find any information on whether USUHS determines your service branch or you are able to keep your prior branch? Thanks

I have no idea about official school policy on this. However, I believe that USUHS does it's best to accommodate your branch preferences and will try to offer you a spot in your service of choice first. Later in the process you may be offered a spot in a different service if there are spots available and you are still on the wait list. In other words no guarantee of being offered your prior branch.

That being said I know of only 1 student with prior service entering a different branch for medical school( Air Force->Army) and that person is an MD/PhD student. Perhaps the others took the HPSP scholarship instead of coming to USUHS.

Ok so the physical exam required for acceptance and the PFT for push-ups sit ups and the run are separate events.

1) No. Your initial acceptance will be conditional on you passing the DODMERB exam, getting any necessary medical waivers, a Height/weight, and a security screening background check. Once these things are done you will receive an unconditional acceptance and you are good to go/wait for bolc/cot/ods. No PFT.

The DODMERB exam consists of a physical exam looking for possible current or former medical conditions that may preclude you from serving in the military. No physical fitness test required. If they find you have a disqualifying condition it may be waiverable, but that process is a pain so get started earlier rather than later.

2) initial physical is the DODMERB exam so the answer is No. At bolc etc they will administer an initial and final PFT. you just need to pass final PFT before the end of BOLC so again the answer is no. However, if you pass the initial you get to do combatives instead of group pt in the am.

If you are worried about the PFT you have plenty of time just make small changes to your routine and build your base fitness level. You can then train up the specific fitness events in the PFT with about 1 mo until the test and get your numbers up easily enough. Just do more and make incremental progress.

You are offered a slot for a specific branch. If you are out of the military you can pick any (preference order) and if your first isn't available but your second is, they will ask you if you want that.

If you are still active duty you can not change services except under unusual circumstances

Thank you! This makes me so much better knowing that I don't have to pass all the physical fitness events within the next month. Whew...

Does anyone know what the process is if you have to be taped for body fat % for exceeding the max weight? I've been looking at the requirements, and I'm pretty sure that's going to be the case for me, so was just wondering how much time that tacks on to the process. Thanks!

First II of the season! First time reapplicant. Submitted secondary July 7th, confirmed July 14th. Got the invite yesterday for September 25th.

First time reapplicant here. Waitlisted here last year. One professor didn't write letter until late September 🙁

Nontraditional, both GPAs 3.8, MCAT 33, current reservist.

When did you interview last cycle? To my knowledge, USUHS accepts over 50% of the people it interviews. And if you interview early (before November), do your chances go up even more?

Sadly, I didn't interview until early December. They didn't have any real slots left by then, only waitlist slots. They told us that as soon as we got there. Talk about a mood killer.

Yes, they do rolling admissions, so the earlier you interview the better.

Not sure how familiar you are with the military fitness tests, but you'll have to pass the test twice a year for your entire career as well. So getting in shape for it won't be a one time deal just to get accepted.
Unfortunately a lot of people think that way and I don't mean in this thread. We lose a decent number if people every year who are good at their job but can't manage to stay in shape.

For clarification I don't blame the system. If you know you need to stay at a certain weight to stay employed and you don't so it, that's on you. Now those of you that have to get in shape to start out I empathize with. I've been there

Exactly. It was the 10 push-up comment that concerned me a bit, though that's not to say there's plenty of time to make lifestyle changes and get in shape for life at this point. At least with the Navy, you usually do a GMO tour before residency. That includes being with the Marines, a flight surgeon, undersea medicine which can include training with the SEALs, etc. As a military doctor, you're expected to be healthy enough to hold your own and not be a burden should you ever find yourself in a combat theater. Just because you're a physician doesn't mean you're excluded from the same fitness standards. Do you have to go to mandatory PT sessions during your career? No. But you are expected to stay in fighting shape.
I would agree with you most of the time but in my current squadron all officers are required at PT including our flight surgeon 😛

Oh I entirely understand that we need to complete PT twice a year. I am just glad that the physical we have to complete before our interview doesn't involve pushups and running and all that.

For current students, how much is the typical rent for a one bedroom apartment near the school? Do most students live within walking distance to the school? Will the 1800+ BAH be enough to cover monthly housing costs?

Current MSIV here. I'll try to answer a few questions.

This is accurate except I don't know why you would buy another stethoscope, the one they give you is fine. I've been using it throughout my rotations and I don't have any trouble hearing things I need to hear. I don't know anyone in my class who replaced it except for a couple people whose parents gave them one as a gift. This definitely isn't what you need to worry about before you get into school.

Most people do not live within "walking distance" per se. There aren't a lot of apartments that are really close to the school. A lot of people share houses or live in apartments on the Metro. Grosvenor is a popular location. You should really try to find something along the metro because parking is a nightmare at school and it's almost impossible to get a parking permit to park there, unless you're carpooling with at least 2 other people. Even if you end up having clinical rotations at the school or at Walter Reed, you may not be allowed to park on base. This changed since my class started and it has screwed us over because a lot of people live out farther away and were counting on being able to drive in and park. My advice is to make sure that you can get to school without driving from where ever you decide to live. Riding a bike isn't a bad option either. That being said, you can find 1 bedroom apartments from 1500-2000 with varying amenities in the Bethesda area. Finding a 3 or 4 bedroom house and splitting the rent is often a money saver.
