2014-2015 Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Also, did you guys receive an II over email from your admissions counselors?

It looks like people getting IIs now either have very high stats or are prior-service.

II for 9/18, so stoked!!! I'm from Cali, no prior service, interviewed here last year and loved it but was waitlisted (interviewed in January) sooo happy to have the opportunity to come back and avoid the waitlist. Good news for fellow apps as well, 29 MCAT (11PS 10BIO 8VR), 3.7 gpa, students seem happy here, and I would love to come here for school!

Congrats!

Didn't you say that you applied in November of last year? You got an II even with a November application? Did you have really impressive ECs?

So, to clarify, your interview invite came from your advisor and not some generic email?

mine did not come from my counselor, but from the admissions email. my email shows the name as office of admissions and outreach.

[email protected]

that's the email address I saw in case you want to keep it from entering your spam folder 🙂

my interview was from "admissions" and not my counselor. And my extracurriculars are decent, normal volunteering really. I had a volunteer abroad trip to Guatemala; kinda unique. I think something special about my application is that I worked to fund my own education and living my last two years at SDSU. I think as a Navy applicant, they can appreciate my work ethic and I have been pretty resilient. Worked around 30 hours while going to school full time, busy busy busy. but I think when I interviewed last year I made a good impression, and I have been in contact with Dr. Saguil of admissions, thoroughly demonstrating my continued interest in the program, and I think he took me seriously which is awesome.

Sure thing. 3.4/30. Pretty solid extracurriculars and extensive clinical experience

Awesome. Do you mind giving a rough overview of your clinical experiences? Did you have paid clinical work experiences (aka EMT, scribe, etc), or just hospital volunteering hours?

Will send secondary tomorrow. Hopefully there are still IIs left! 😀

I am sure there are plenty left. They interview 600ish people a year. But I think the first round might be running out, leaving me in the dust 🙁

I feel you.

I was REALLY hoping for one of the first interview invites, for a few reasons, one of which is that I am PCSing during that time frame and making it there would be easier than having to coordinate leave or TAD at a later date. Obviously if I get one later I'll still be happy but I was definitely thinking I had a good chance for the first round.

I am shocked that you haven't received an II. You have killer stats and active duty military...

Also, is the "first round" over already? Or will the school just keep sending out IIs consistently over the next few weeks? You applied to the school last cycle, any idea on how they work regarding interviews?

My completed app was forwarded for review on 7/16 by my admission counselor. So it has only been two weeks.

I think I may be having an issue there as well. My completed app was forwarded 7/21 (or at least that's when I got an email about it). What I don't understand though is that I turned in my completed secondary June 28th (the day after they were released) and all my LORs were in AND AMCAS was verified. I feel like I got held up for some unknown reason.

Oh also I didn't apply last cycle. This is my first one 🙂

Maybe you are onto something here. Could it be that some application materials got misplaced? I turned in my secondary in paper, so I am afraid that some components of it might have gotten lost during the shuffle. Or it could be that they just don't want me, haha.

And Glycereine, if your app was forwarded on 7/21, then I don't think you have anything to worry about. it seems that most people with IIs right now were complete before July 10th.

Just finished my secondary. Since this was my top school I was very careful with everything, I had FIVE drafts of my essays lol. Complete 7/31!

We have to calm down man. I'm in the same boat as you. Been checking my email about every 5 minutes. Just gotta sit back and let it happen. Nothing we can do but wait now.

Thanks. Do you mind sharing when you submitted your secondary?

Secondary was submitted July 3rd. Got an email that it was received July 8th. Everything verified and submitted by AMCAS July 15th.

I see. So I am assuming that your completed application was ready for review July 15/16th, the same date as mine.

From last year's thread, it looks like they sent a batch of II's for one interview date, then waited a week later before sending the next batch for the following week and so on. It seems to have a bit different pattern this year with invites going out two days back to back, but I wouldn't be surprised if they start becoming about a week apart. Who knows.... I just hope we all see them soon. 🙂

Sean, you think you are in a not good situation? Your MCAT is 3 points higher than mine, and you submitted a month or more before me. I still haven't even gotten my confirmation email.

I don't think you'll get a confirmation email automatically. You have to ask for one.

And I submitted my secondary via postal mail, and I contacted my counselor after my tracking number indicated that the package has arrived. After a few email exchanges and clarifications, my application was marked complete, and my counselor forwarded it for review on July 16th.

So email your counselor and ask for a confirmation!

If we submitted in the first batch but didn't get an II, does that mean we'll be put on the back burner? Or do they periodically go back to the previous batch and offer II as we go along? I am afraid of my paper secondary getting lost as the cycle goes on.

I think you guys could use some R&R...

Rest and Recuperation? I know R&R is a military term...

Anyways, I really really really want to enjoy the military and hence attend this school...first choice by a landslide

I wish I knew for sure. I just tried to look at previous threads to get an idea of the pattern/dates to anticipate an II based on our submission date. But I'm not sure exactly how they determine who receives an II or what they do with those who do not receive one right away. It looks like other people who were submitted the same day as yours just received the II, so I know the wait sucks, but see what happens with the next batch of IIs. Maybe you'll be at the top of that list. And when you notice that they have obviously passed the date that you were submitted, maybe you can call and inquire about your status. Good luck!!

My admissions counselor is on leave/vacation until next week so that timing is rough if there was something wrong with my application.

I have read that USU supplied all of your supplies for school, including equipment. Can any current students tell me anything about the quality of the equipment provided? Is it the cheapest on the market, average, or above average? Any additional comments are also appreciated.

Thanks,

Sachmo

What do you mean equipment? Like uniforms and personal-issue side arms? Is the berretta 9 still the standard issued pistol?

I was talking medical equipment that every student will need both during school and likely during their career such as a stethoscope and whatnot.

Oh...
That I have no idea. But I really don't think there's any meaningful difference (at least for a medical student in training) between a "cheap" stethoscope and a more upscale version. And if you don't like your issues equipment, you can always buy your own, right? Can't imagine these things costing more than a negligible sum.

Can any current students/grad shed some light on this?

Incoming MS1 here, I'll let you know how it is when they actually issue it (school hasn't even started yet) although I can't fathom why it's any concern of yours.

I'm a little curious if you somehow heard it was lower quality equipment/materials?

I spoke to two USUHS graduates here since your post and they were confused by it and said everything is normal/good.

I was just curious since it is provided for you if it was quality equipment or things that would definitely need to be replaced by the time your clinical rounds came around. Just a curious applicant 😉

I'm glad to hear that things seem to be pretty good, because if two students didn't have any issues with the equipment it can't be bad.

Thanks guys.👍

I can't answer for certain about USUHS but the military in general doesn't skimp on education.

Oh, my stats weren't anything too special, 34 MCAT, 3.5 GPA, typical extracurriculars, a few low-impact publications here-and-there, I got my AMCAS and secondary in by the end of July and towards the end of September I was offered an interview for late October. USUHS was my top choice so I was pleased to get accepted by Thanksgiving.

This makes me feel a lot better! I have a 3.6 GPA, 33 MCAT, pretty diverse ECs, and decent research. My app was forwarded for review on July 16th, and I am still waiting for interview invite!
