2014-2015 University of Arizona Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Looks like UA - TUCSON hasn't reviewed secondary applications past the 3rd week of July and it's almost September!!!!:-(

IS. Rejected- on interview wait list... to be honest im floored. MCAT 31 GPA 3.65

I thought I was for sure going to be given an interview as IS and that it was up to the interview to get me in. I dont know what to say.

wait. Did they flat out reject or say "We can't offer you interview now but may later"? I didn't know that they reject or at least this early in the cycle. If it is the latter, you may get II (based on last year's thread)...

Sorry to hear that buddy. Your stats and extracurricular sound great! When were you complete if you don't mind me asking?

If you got the "hold" email don't fret, others here have gotten IIs after being put on hold.

It isn't the end of the world, at all. If you look at last year's thread, you'll see plenty of people got that email and received interviews later. If you want more recent... I got the hold email on 8/12, and received the interview invite on 8/22. Keep the faith 🙂

Im OOS with lizzy M of ~71...is it too late to submit and still have a reasonable chance at an II? I plan on finishing it this Saturday (it is my last secondary w/ essays!). LORs have all been sent. Kinda in a money crunch and dont want to waste 75 bucks on a school for which I am too late.

You are definitely still in this! When did you get the email? Yesterday?

i got it the 22nd but I didnt see it until yesterday because I had to actually go into the portal itself to see it.

it looks they have rejected people and not put everyone in hold email..based on Official 2014-2015 rejection thread

This is from that thread:

I'm not sure if I believe that. I applied last year and they didn't reject anyone pre-inteview until February. However, they may have changed their process this year.

Hi everyone,
Just wanted to say hi and good luck , this is the worst process known to man (extremely stressful during the cycle(s)).
I was in your shoes so any way I can help or answer questions between studying I'd be glad to.

Being an avenger, how did you highlight your strengths/weaknesses during the interview and how did the adcom view you given your unique background?

Any words of wisdom for our upcoming MMIs? What made you choose UA over other schools? Thanks for helping us out!

I had to dim-down how great I was, it was truly difficult!

On a realistic note now: MMI's - If you haven't done one yet yet, they are fun butttt its much more difficult to get across "how awesome you are." Some schools still do the 1-on-1 or 1-on-3 interview, which I personally are more difficult but way easier for the interviewer to figure out who you are. Try and make references to things you have done, make yourself stand out! If the prompt ask "how would you deal with so and so situation" answer it and then indirectly add in "when I saw so and so volunteering at whatever... I saw a similar situation and this is how I handled it." It gives the interviewer a glimpse into who you are (without listing your resume) since they know nothing about you. Don't sound like a pre-recorded robot (I want to be a doctor to save the world),it is so obvious when people do that and very annoying. Also don't brag... at least try and sound sincere...

I have many ties to UA - it was by far my number one choice for so many reasons. Go where you see the most help and friendly students/staff. The material you get even is SO dense and who wants to feel alone during that? UA literally tears the "competitive pre-med" out of you. All the students share notes, meet up for study sessions, etc everyone helps everyone in every possible way they can. Some top upperclassman (AOA people) send out all their study guides from their past 2 years which is amazing to get a foundation on how you are going to retain all this info. You don't find that everywhere and frankly I don't want to go to a Harvard/John-Hopkins type school where its cut throat (even if I applied and was accepted - which they wouldn't and I didn't lol).

If you have specific questions PM me or just post on the forum
Again good luck in this nightmare of a process

Sincerely
The Avenger

Thanks a lot for your thoughts!! My question: How likely is to get II after getting a hold status? Is it unlikely (like some schools like loyola) or very likely? During your cycle, where you put on hold and eventually got II?

The interview invite has less weight of your actually stats and more so on your secondary app. Just because you have a
38 Mcat and 4.0 does not mean you will get an II.
You have multiple screens first being meeting a certain criteria of gpa and Mcat in order to get secondary. The next is based on on your secondary. Now what ever you score here is what determines an interview or not. If you got a hold email it means that you didn't score high enough compared to that group of invites. Now your score gets passed to the next round of invites, if it scores high enough later then you get an II. The earlier invites are usually very very good applicants so if you got a hold this early don't think your out of the runnings. Same applies to the earlier acceptances.

With that said personally I didn't get a pre-hold but I know many that did and are my classmates. After you do interview acceptances are done in a similar fashion. So your score may not get you an acceptance in the first round (you will get a new hold email) and then if you score high enough in later acceptances then you will get an accept. I got those hold emails.

Don't lose hope your so early in the game. For those still turning secondary's in they are very important spend the time on them.

Good luck hopefully this all made sense, if it doesn't pm me.

I wrote this on my iPhone so don't judge it was not the easiest task, you can call it my kryptonite 😉
Hi The Avenger!

I have applied to UA-Tucson twice, got interviews both times 2-3 weeks after submitting my secondary applications. However, I wasn't accepted either cycles after my interviews. I know it's probably hard for you to say, but does that mean that I didn't get accepted most likely because of my interviews?

Also, after the interview, do stats (MCAT AND GPA) still play a huge role in our acceptance?

Secondary submitted! Hopefully this OOSer isn't too late to the party...

Good luck, everyone!

When do you guys think the next round of interviews will be sent?

Thanks for all your help, it is very much appreciated! Just out of curiosity though, how do you know so much about the admissions process? Do they tell you about the entire admissions process once you start school at UA-TUCSON? Again, I truly appreciate all your advice, I was just wondering how you know so much;-)

Does a green check on the "application complete" part of my status mean I am complete? I never got an email saying I am complete.

Yes, I didn't get a complete email either and called them and they said it was ok. I guess it's always good to check with them though.

Interviewed here today! The MMI wasn't bad at all, and I actually enjoyed it. That was the consensus of my interview group. You cant really prepare for an MMI, so try not to stress prior to any that you have. This is my home institution, and today only reaffirmed why it's one of my top choices. Love the school!

Congrats on your interview. Did you do the Mock MMI. If so, do you think it helped with your actual interview?

I did not do the mock MMI. It was my 2nd interview, but first MMI. From talking to my fellow interviewees, there's no good way to prepare for these. 2 minutes is plenty of time to read the prompt, and come up with your answer if you're relatively quick on your feet. The important thing here is good social skills and ability to think quickly, since you only have 7 minutes to make your mark at each station.

I had my interview here yesterday. It was such a great experience. I really got the impression that the school is very invested in finding the students with the best fit, and that everyone on the staff/faculty is invested in the students' success. It's definitely a great school.

Still waiting for the next II batch- where oh were could you be?

Hi!

Do you know when the next round of interview invites will be sent?

Has anyone received any interview invites/hold emails recently?!?!?!?!?

I was complete 7/19 and put on hold 8/22. I didn't send an email yet just in case that status changes. Should I send them an email updating them on what I've been doing? Or should I just keep waiting? I know that some schools frown on such emails, but I can't find anything telling me not to contact them.
