2014-2015 University of Arizona - Phoenix Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For the last prompt "What is important to you that you want to make sure the Admissions Committee knows about you that is not already included in your application?" what did you guys discuss?

Is this a place to expound upon something we are passionate about or to give reasons for applying to UA-Phoenix? The prompt seems kind of open-ended and I want to make sure I'm not going to ramble on about something way off the mark.

Edit: for the 12-13' cycle this was a place to discuss grade fluctuations/time taken off school. Is this still what the prompt is for?

Bump bump! Can anyone shed some light on what is appropriate to include in the final prompt? @UA Phoenix Med?

Thanks in advance for any information. This thread is a godsend.

@hellanutella I was going to use this space to discuss some biographical info not included in my AMCAS, but I believe I am going to use this space to emphasize my interest + excitement (especially being an IS applicant) - as you seem to plan on doing. I am guessing it's 100% appropriate. 🙂

Welcome to the 2015-2015 application cycle! I hope to meet many of you over the course of the season, but until then I would like to introduce myself. I'm Dr. Cunningham, Assistant Dean for the Office of Admissions & Recruitment and Assistant Professor at the COM-Phoenix. I've been in Phoenix since 2006, the start of our four-year program, and the class for which you are applying will be my 9th class. Our program has grown from 24 to 80 students and our campus has expanded (still is) in the thriving and lively downtown Phoenix biomedical science corridor.

I'm here to answer your questions about our two programs: MD and graduate certificate (aka Pathway Scholars). Pathways is for Arizona-only, while MD is open to anyone who is a US Citizen or has Permanent Residency.

You are always welcome to call or email our office - visit phoenixmed.arizona.edu for contact and other helpful information about our selection criteria and application process.

Remember to breathe through the process and be responsible for your own information. We're here to help!!

We will post our newest MD class stats once they arrive on July 7. Pathway Scholars begin on June 23.

Hello, thank you so much for making yourself available to all of us here, it's a great resource. I was just wondering if you share any information with the university at Tuscon for applicants that applied at both campuses? Thanks.

Wondering about this as well. Asked in the Tucson thread, but we were directed to ask here too. 🙂

Hi Dr. Cunningham,

Are there any Mock Multiple Mini-Interviews workshop that we can attend to familiarize ourselves with the interview process?

Thanks

Dr. Cunningham,

Is there any way to make alterations to the secondary if it has already been submitted? I finished my last essay last night (1 am) and then copy and pasted the wrong one in the promp box. As such the committee now has my challenging factor essay twice and is missing the essay regarding the last 12-18 months. If there is any way this can be remedied I would love to know what I can do, however if there is nothing we can do I understand as well and will live with the consequences and hope for the best.

Medical schools do not share information other than final decisions (acceptances/waitlist/rejections) per a national report.

Best school ever. Good luck to you all!

Miss you, Dr. Cunningham- hope you're well!

Does anyone know when the first OOS interview offers are sent out? I've seen that in previous years, the first few interview days are for Arizona residents only. I submitted my secondary and all necessary info today.

When checking status do you see "interview" then a little padlock and "Not scheduled yet" ... ?

Hi Dr. Cunningham,
Can you shed some light on how UA Phx considers reapplicants? I applied last year and got placed on an alternate list for an interview. This year, I'll be completing a Masters in Health Care Delivery. Thanks!

MS1 here - They gave us some statistics on our class earlier in the week and I believe 28% were reapplicants, including myself.

The outcome of the past year in no way influences the outcome of the next. You are making a second "first impression" and will be compared to a new pool.

Hi Dr. Cunningham,

I have a question regarding the section for required courses on the secondary application. If one of the required courses I listed (along with an explanation of why I think the course satisfies the requirement) is later not approved by UA Phoenix to satisfy that requirement, will I be notified in time so I can enroll for that class at a community college? I understand all required courses must be completed and grades must be on transcript before June 2015.

Thank you so much for your help!

Yes, our team will notify you as soon as possible so that you can work to find a course.

Hi Dr. Cunnigham,

I've added this school last Wednesday and still haven't gotten secondary. Do you know when the next batch of secondaries will be sent out?

Thanks!

Hi Dr. Cunningham,
I am an in-state student that submitted the primary app on June 3rd, but haven't yet been invited to complete a secondary application. Would I have been notified if there were any holds of some kind on my application?

Thanks!

Dr. Cunningham,

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions. I have a question regarding coursework. If I have AP credit that I would like to enter, for the social and behavioral sciences and english requirement, what would I put for the grade? Additionally, does the coursework section have to be completed prior to submission of secondary essays? Or does the coursework need only to be completed by matriculation?

Thank you!

You can enter AP for the grade and all remaining coursework must be graded by June 15, so apply and continue working in your remaining courses.

Happy to help!

Dr. Cunningham,

As a reapplicant, will my secondary from last year be compared to my secondary this year? I feel that my answers from last year were well written and were a good representation of me as an applicant. I plan on making minor changes to reflect what has occurred since I last applied, but I'm not sure if I should completely rewrite my essays. Thanks!

In order to save Dr. Cunningham some time I'll copy and paste her response to this question a couple pages back. She said "... We do not compare applications, so it is to your power to make a great first impression each year!"

Dr.Cunningham,
How are applicants selected for an interview at UA Phoenix Med? Are only GPA and MCAT scores used as selection factors ( I know certain schools automatically weed out applicants based on MCAT / GPA ). Or is the entire AMCAS application, secondary application, and all letters of recommendation looked at? I know UA Phoenix Med got 4000 + applicants last year, so I find it somewhat hard to believe that our entire AMCAS application, secondary application, and all letters of recommendation are looked at for an interview offer. I'm asking because I have a 23 MCAT, and was wondering if there is any chance of getting an interview at UA Phoenix Med? Thanks in advance! Mike B.

There are 3 reviews before an interview is extended. Each builds on the previous review and in all, every component of your application is critiqued - MCAT alone does not keep you out of med school, nor does it get you in. We read every applicant file once a supplemental is received. No smoke. We truly do.

Thanks for the quick response., Dr. Cunningham. Also, do you answer questions that are sent as Personal Messages to you as well? I sent you a message earlier, and have not received a response. I will be more than happy to ask it here. Please let me know🙂

Interested in our Pathway Scholars Program? Are you from AZ, have less than a 25 MCAT/3.5 GPA and have elements in your background that have limited your preparation for medicine (work, underserved, rural), you would be a candidate for the program.

You can only apply to one program type (MD or Pathway Scholars) at once - if you applied to the MD but want to switch to Pathway Scholars, contact our office. You can apply directly to Pathway without having to be rejected in the MD pool. This is a change from last year.

Hi Dr. Cunningham,

Will an insect physiology course in a different dept (under Environmental Science) satisfy the physiology requirement? Will an Ethic Studies Literature course qualify as one English course if it's writing intensive? When determining if a course satisfies a requirement, do you look at the course title or the dept it's listed under (Microbiology course under Public Health Dept)? Thank you so much for taking the time to answer our questions. I hope I meet the requirements so that I can apply here!

Send the course descriptions to our email address - the titles alone are not enough information to give an answer.

Thank you so much! I have one more question about the clinical letter of recommendation. I have a letter from a physician who works in the pharmaceutical clinical trials industry (not a clinic- more research related). Would this letter be good for the clinical recommendation or should I request a letter from a physician I shadowed?

Someone that observed you in a clinical setting would be better.

Hi Dr. Cunningham,

Thank you for taking the time out of your day to answer all of our questions. I have a question about entering coursework for the supplementary application; is it admissible to enter graduate-level courses? If so, is there a preference by the admissions committee for undergraduate level vs. graduate level courses? Sorry if this question has already been asked, and thanks again!

Hello Dr. Cunningham,

I took a year of general chemistry. However, it was done over three years, so I received three different grades. Are we supposed to average the three or post just one of them?

List the course(s) that most accurately completes the requirement ex: undergrad Prin of Biochem is preferred over grad course that hints to Biochem in the course description. We have access to all courses, regardless.

Hello Dr. Cunningham,

I'm sorry if this is information that I should have found easily, but I keep getting conflicting information wherever I look in terms of letters of recommendation. For UA Phoenix, is there a maximum number of letters that will be taken?

Also, if there is, what is the preferable ratio of writers such as teachers to clinical to research? (Such as 2 science teachers, 1 clinical, 1 research for example.)

I hope that makes sense and sorry again if it's a silly question!

Thank you!

More than 5 would not be necessary and at least one letter from a clinical experience, preferably from someone that has observed you and can attest to your readiness for patient interaction.
