2014-2015 University of Arizona - Phoenix Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What are your stats if you don't mind sharing? I know stats only comprise a fraction of the decision process but I figured 3.94/33 IS with solid ECs/experiences would at least yield an interview opportunity for me at Phoenix. Alas, the wait goes on..

Well you beat me! Im 3.65 GPA/ 31 MCAT- IS-.. my EC's are pretty good too. 1500 clinical hours. 3 years research, speak Spanish, lds mission , started non-profit health center, and so forth... that being said I dont know what they want per-say. I have a friend who interview about a week or two ago (Tucson) with rather similar statistics to myself and she was OOS so at this point ive got my fingers crossed but at the same time im not banking on anything.

Rejected... Not a good morning for me. OOS 73 complete 7/6 . Good luck to all.

Edit: at least now I don't have to mess with physiology!

closing in on 3 months complete with no news D:

Does Phoenix accept Update letters pre-interview?

This might be a dumb question, but please humor me (also looked through earliest posts couldn't find answer), in our "Status" portion of our online application portal, next to interview there is a lock icon and it says "None Scheduled Yet." Does everyone get this who is still active, even those who won't be invited for an interview? Thanks

Everyone gets that

Complete: 24 July
II: 19 August
Interview: 6 October
Accept/reject/waitlist date: End of November

IS, LizzyM ~76

I really like that they tell you when they will meet to discuss and select from the interview cohort. Our whole group will hear back at the end of November. They give direct responses of accept, reject, or wait list - none of this string-you-along stuff. If any of you want to know more about the interview day, PM me. I'm happy to discuss anything but the contents of the MMI (it's more fun if it's a surprise anyway, no?).

Sorry if this has been asked already, does anyone know if the Admissions Committee waits for all of your letters listed on AMCAS to be uploaded before they make a decision to offer an interview or not? I'm waiting on a letter and am still in pre-interview invite limbo

I think they need at least 1 letter to consider an applicant for an interview.

Guess not lol, rejected today

First rejection burns. IS, LizzyM around 72.

Not sure why, but the one piece of advice all med school students told me about this process is that there is no way to explain decisions.

If you're out and about at the UC-Davis AMSA event, stop by table 60 and say hi!!

Does anyone know if bacterial physiology or physiological psychology from ASU would fulfill the physiology requirements or should I prepare to enroll in a physiology course for the spring? I majored in Microbiology so I never took an anatomy/physiology course :/

Same. 7/9 for me... I did a little digging and it looks like they had a few interviews all the way up to the end of January/beginning of February so there is hope its just a LONG road!
The November interview slots just opened up on my portal, so you guys should have plenty of invites left! (I think there was even one October date open last I checked).

Good luck!

Oh wow. This is good news. Some schools are scheduling for next year already. Hopefully we hear some good news soon! Good luck, ya'll! 🙂

This is an off-the-wall thing but I need some specific advice for the women that have already interviewed here....heels or flats? Is there a lot of walking? Time to change shoes after MMI?

Where whatever you feel conformable and confident in. There's not a lot of walking. I personally wore flats to my interview last year but some of my classmates wore heels

II today! Can't wait to visit 🙂 one of my top choices for sure.

Be comfortable, heels or not, just be comfortable 😉

OOS submitted 8/5 but didnt get MCAT scores til 8/26 (so I was probably considered complete around then) and have heard absolutely nothing since. . . the silence (from everyone of my schools) is slowly killing me

Rejected Today🙁. Complete on 9/3
Good luck everyone! Interviewing in Tucson this weekend. Staying Optimistic!

rejected. so sad. OOS LizzyM ~68. complete 8/29. really wishing I can get even one interview from an MD school soon. deafening silence is absolutely terrifying.

rejected. OOS, LM ~78 complete 9/8. Really wished I could have visited Phoenix, but alas it wasn't meant to be. Good luck to all still active!

Looks eerily similar to all previous years. We'll get those up ASAP.

I would also like to see how many OOS applicants matriculated as compared to past years. What happened to the idea of taking IS so that they would stay and help the surrounding communities. Seems like your mission statement is a moving target.

I would say about 20ish are OOS. I think I can count around 16 for sure that are OOS in my class like myself. Its a good 70% at least is instate.

You should probably read through the thread more often. I quote this from Dr. Cunningham:

"Our inaugural class of non-residents entered residency this summer. 65% of the non residents stayed in AZ, compared to the 50% of residents who remained in the state."

Therefore, accepting more in-state does not necessarily translate to more students staying and helping the surrounding communities.

I think he meant to ask for the numbers of those accepted, not matriculated, from out of state, according to his tone.

Most of the classes reflect this 70% IS trend from what I've seen. Its relevant because it affects how many IS vs OOS are accepted to achieve this.

Also, I was talking to a doctor who practices in family medicine and she was talking about how the number of residency spots in the state do not reflect our need so sadly many graduates from Arizona medical schools do have to complete their training elsewhere.

I see. Well, then the question becomes why is there such a high percentage of graduates conducting their residency in-state instead of going back home?

Have you seen it here?

It was a rhetorical question. Just trying to get my first point across, in that originally out-of-staters eventually make Phoenix or Arizona home - contributing to surrounding communities. 😉

I am sorry you feel a need to advocate for Ms. Cunningham. Maybe you feel it will help promote your application by doing so. The statistics that are available from the state of Arizona don't support her claim. A majority of OOS students move OOS.
For those of us who have supported this school with our tax dollars, I find their pursuit of OOS students to be insulting.
