2014-2015 University of California - Riverside Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just out of curiosity, though, did anyone leave that last personal statement question blank?

Yeah after writing 12-something essays, I doubt that leaving the one that was repeatedly marked "optional" blank would affect you at all. 🙂

Thanks everyone! Does anyone know if they have started giving out interviews yet? Also, will they review your secondary and/or offer interviews before receiving your committee letter of recommendation?

Got a rejection today! LizzyM 70, IS from nearby but outside the IE

Surprised at no interview!

Rejected post-secondary just now. Complete 7/24. CA resident but no ties to IE. LizzyM >75

I was rejected but then I got an email saying it was a mistake...

Is that for all you guys as well?

Nothing for me either way. You guys shouldn't feel bad about being rejected, though; this school is regionally focused, and half of its class are UCR grads.

Personally, I wrote about living, working, and wanting to practice in the Inland Empire on my AMCAS personal statement, even if that meant nixing me at a few OOS schools.

I'm not sure I understand. Does this mean you were: 1) Accidentally rejected, and they are withdrawing their rejection, or 2) accidentally sent a rejection email too early?

Actually got a physical email rejection, then received another email soon after saying the email was an error and the app is still being considered

Will UC Riverside look at your application/send secondaries if you have an MCAT score but also another test day? I read somewhere on SDN that some schools wait until your next test score is out. My first test score is definitely not great but I think I have a chance for UCR. I haven't gotten a secondary yet and I'm worried

Not sure on this but I would guess as long as your score is within the MCAT range on msar you should be fine.

I'm not sure...I know UC Davis initially put my application on hold because I had a planned MCAT. I then cancelled the retake and was later sent a secondary. I'm not sure if it's the same system UC-wide. Perhaps a call to the admissions office will clarify- they are incredibly nice!

Thank you for all your help!!!!!

Just curious, was the "Interview" Application category always there when you click Home after submitting your secondary?

It shows a lock for me under application status and "not scheduled yet" under notes, but I don't remember it being there before and my other Amp secondaries don't show this status.

Like another subsection on the menu on the homepage? Nope, I don't have that! I have the "interview not scheduled yet" with the lock, but no separate interview tab.

Just submitted this secondary...least confident about this one out of all!

Does anyone know what kind of MCAT score range they are looking for?

No secondary yet. No email saying they even got my application. Anyone on the same boat?

Hi everyone,

I'm planning on applying for UCR SOM next june and I'm wondering how much they weigh ties to the IE and volunteering with the IE community? I was born and raised in the IE and I would love to practice there but I haven't visited home more than a handful of times since starting undergrad, so I haven't volunteered there since high school.

BTW, good luck to everyone applying to UCR this cycle!

Really hoping to get an II from here, I just graduated from UCR so hopefully that gives me some leeway? I just hate how they are lagging on the whole process (although they are a new medical school...) :[

How many are answering the "personal statement" question? If so, are you actuality talking about your personal life or UCRSOM itself

Apparently they don't do interviews til Jan & February, so we may have to wait a lot longer to hear anything. At least they make the interviews on week-ends so we don't have to miss work/school.

I kind of used it as a way to explain some of the ways I have been exposed to under-served communities and how those communities shaped my desire to work in such an area.

You should be in a good position assuming you put IE on your AMCAS for where you were born/spent your childhood.

About half the incoming class came from UCR so its a major advantage having done undergrad there.

My mistake. I saw that on an old document, perhaps from their first year. This year their web site says they interview from September 2014-March 2015.

phew! It seems like they are taking a while, nonetheless.

I'm in the same boat. UCR hasn't sent me anything at all. 🙁
Yea, I haven't either. 🙁

I talked to one of the MS1 a few weeks ago at one of the clinics and she told me she didn't get anything until October. Staying positive.

On the secondary, did you guys just list the activities from your primary app? I don't really understand why they want us to list our activities again especially when some don't fall under just leadership, clinical, research, and community service.

I tracked down where I read that they wouldn't do interviews until January-March. It's in the MSAR! But their web-site says something different.

I dont really care for how they worded that section either, but I tried to match my activities/work as closely with the options they give you as possible. My thought was to get the experiences I wanted them to notice on the secondary somewhere.. and just placed them where they seemed most appropriate.

Hey everyone,
I go to UCR and from what I have heard interview invites should be around October to November with UCR alumni and students receiving II's a little later than others.

Also, the dean of the SOM wants to increase the number of students from or living in the IE to around 60% of the class if not more. It has been said in earlier years threads but I will say it again, UCR is looking to make an impact in 5 specific fields: Peds, General Surgery, Psych, family medicine, & OB/Gyn. The school is hoping to award 5 students entering in 2015 major scholarships if they specify prior to entry they would be interested in one of the 5 areas they emphasis. However, the welcome applicants interested in ALL fields and areas (you just are not eligible for the scholarship).

Hope the info helps.

Look forward to hearing something in December/Jan hopefully

Do you know if the class size is still 50 for next year?
