2014-2015 University of California - San Francisco Application Thread

Got the secondary today! OOS, LizzyM ~76. I was so happy!!! I honestly was getting to the point where I didn't think it would come so seeing that email made me very happy 🙂

Congrats!! Could I ask when your primary was verified?

Thanks! My primary was verified by early June (the 10th I think?). My letter packet from my school wasn't uploaded until late July, though. However I recently found out that letters aren't considered before sending out secondaries.

Just some helpful bits of info from last year's thread:

~7,000 applicants (split pretty evenly IS vs OOS)
~1,500 secondaries
~500 interviews (342/154 IS vs OOS)
~275 accepted (179/94 IS vs OOS)
Last year's first secondary application invitation: July 11th
Last year's first interview invitation: late August
Last year's first wave of acceptances: January 29th
Last year's first wave of wait-lists: January 30th
Last year's first wave of wait-list acceptances: May 16th

Note that UCSF is unique in how highly selective it is in handing out secondary applications. As such, your odds of getting an interview invitation are much better if you've received your secondary, compared to submitting secondaries at other schools. Also, UCSF has a very high acceptance rate for those who are interviewed, and tends to pull more off the waiting list than the average school. Overall, this admissions philosophy is highly considerate to applicants, because it spares most applicants the onerous $100+ secondary fee and leaves fewer applicants spending a lot to fly to the interview only to be rejected later. This admissions philosophy is a small window into how UCSF, at large, is very kind, egalitarian, and humble as an institution as a whole.

Most of all, good luck to those applying this cycle. 🙂
I
anyone have an idea about how sf treats reapplicants or know of anyone who has had success as one?
My roommate got in as a re-applicant. He took some time off to improve areas of his application he felt he was lacking/weak in, and sure enough, he got in! Anyway, this is rare. But there is something to be said about knowing yourself and your application well. More importantly, being proactive about addressing these areas. Good luck, and don't give up!

Similar stats, a year of research experience at UCSF and now I'm a UCSF employee...still nothing....
Hey,

I am OOS and I am starting to get worried that I'm not going to receive a secondary.

I go to a top IVY league scholl with a GPA of 3.8 and MCAT score of 37. I have multiple first author publications, and I believe I have written a strong primary (spent alot of time on personal statement and activies list).

Does anyone know how likely it is for me to get a secondary if I have not received one yet? Btw, my primary was verified by 2nd week of June.

Do you think the delay means they are still considering giving me one, or just that they have already sent all they will send out to the out of state students?

Should I keep my hopes up?
Yes, I would definitely give them a call to see what's up.

I called UCSF and they told me that they were sending out more secondaries this year than in previous years, and had started earlier. They encouraged me to call back after September 1 if I still did not have a secondary. Best of luck!

did they happen to say how many more? or if much more than in previous years? and if they would have more interviews?

They did not tell me any details. The lovely gentlemen just verified that they had my application, and then casually told me the above facts about more 2ndaries and the earlier piece-I don't know if that means more spots, more II, etc. The wait is wickedly hard!

So I was initially not planning on writing anything for the optional secondary essay. And then, after waiting and realizing how selective UCSF is with giving out secondaries, when I got mine I decided I would write something. And now, after looking at the prompt again, I'm wondering if I should. I don't feel like I really have any updates or things to say that weren't covered in my primary and I don't want to write something to suck up or write for the sake of writing. But at the same time, I feel like I should write something, especially since they said in the email "We would like to learn more about you." Did anyone else not write anything for the essay?

I ended up leaving mine blank. If something was required they would have asked. I've gotten II from schools with similar secondaries that had optional prompts that I left blank. Up to you, either way I doubt it would hurt if you wrote something. I just imagine the primary is enough for schools like this.

Free sunglasses are more love than they've shown me so far 🙁
If it's any consolation they're kind of an ugly green color.

Also, I have a feeling this'll be the only love I ever get from UCSF from this point onward. The magical UCSF admissions committee octopus is going to take one look at my pathetic research ECs and let out a chuckle before tentacle-ing my app into the trash. But we gotta just hang in there 🙂

Don't lose hope! I just got a secondary the other day and I have no research experience. My AMCAS was verified in early June and I was starting to think that, at this point, my application was a lost cause at this school. And then the secondary came. You said it best - just hang in there! 🙂

To clarify, I already received and submitted a secondary. It's the II that I don't think I'm going to get. But congrats to you! And to us! And to everyone! Even to those without secondaries because the fact that you are even applying to medical school is an accomplishment! Just keep swimming.

I laughed so hard at this mental image.

Received a secondary tonight! Super unexpected, I thought I had been rejected already haha. OOS, 4.0, 36.
Easy secondary, turned it around pretty quick since I've been done with all of my other ones for weeks.

Would you gentlemen/ladies mind sharing your verified dates ? I have similar stats, no luck on the secondary though.

Are we supposed to get a complete email? It's been 2 weeks since I submitted
I got an email that said
"Thank you for submitting your secondary application. Please allow our office 4-6 weeks to review your application."

Maybe they haven't received your letters of recommendation ?

Hey guys, have anyone gotten secondaries for mstps? If so, when was ur amcas verification date? thanks

Hmm I never got that... do you think I should email or call them? It was about three weeks ago that I added them, and I was already verified with all my letters.

Did you submit a secondary? If you did and have not yet received that email, I would suggest contacting them to make sure they got your secondary submission.

Any II's yet? When do the first round of invites start to go out usually?

It looks like they went out Friday August 31st last year. So I think we still have a little time to wait unless they got a head start this year.

Hey guys, do you know if UCSF is receptive to in-the-area emails? I'm headed out to California for another interview in early October, but I'm not sure if it's appropriate to send such an email before UCSF sends any interview invites out.

I personally would wait until they start sending them out.

3.5gpa /30 mcat. But grew up in the Bay Area, went to school in socal. Have research, some interesting ECs, worked a decent amount with underserved communities. Definitely did not expect a secondary...im honestly thrilled.

Oops I got a little too excited. LizzyM 69. I was going to type out my mcat and gpa then decided to lizzym and got distracted.

Thanks for the laugh though, sometimes this place is alright.
