2014-2015 University of Maryland Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just rescinded my acceptance to Maryland. Very sad to do so as I absolutely loved this program, however it is just way way too expensive for an OOS student and the financial aid package wasn't great. Hoping the spot goes to one of you! Looking forward to being colleagues someday!
Wouldn't being instate after a year, more or less normalize the cost as compared to other schools ? Just wondering if you did consider that in your decision as not many schools offer that.

Definitely considered it but the numbers still didn't make sense when compared to other schools' fin aid packages. The OOS for that first year is extraordinarily high.

Do you happen to know if everyone is able to become instate after a year? I'd like to know if I can bank on becoming instate. Thanks.

Thats a question for the existing students probably. Hopefully someone can respond.

But the details on this are in the link that was posted earlier

Let me know what you find though...would also like to know more before making a decision in the coming days.

Yeah, I've seen that link, and I've also read the complete text of their classification policy. I just don't how strict they are with the policy--for example, like would having a part time job be sufficient to demonstrate that the student is in Maryland not only for attending an educational institution? I've called the financial aid office, and they've basically said to read the policy, and they don't have numbers as to how many students manage to obtain in-state status after 1 year. So I also would really like to hear from current students.

I have several friends who were OOS initially that obtained IS status after first year. It didn't seem like it was that big of a deal for them to get it at the time.

Thank you for the information. That helps. Do you happen to know if your friends had ties to Maryland/had lived in Maryland before attending medical school? Also, did they work during the first year? Thank you.

Just a caution....I do know that you might end up trying a few times before ur case is approved for instate..So dont bank on being instate after the first year. But eventually, most folks do get approved.

I know that one of them worked in Maryland the year prior to M1, the other did not. They did not work during the first year as well.

Agreed. You may have to be persistent, however, it is definitely worth it. Maryland has been an amazing place to train the past 4 years.

Thank you for the information and advice. I'll consider this carefully.

Hey guys, this message is mostly for the current students at Maryland. I am really excited to be attending UMSOM in the fall and am trying to decide whether or not to commute. My father lives about 25 minutes away from the school and is offering to let me stay at his house free of charge. He travels during the week so the house would be pretty distraction free. I love the idea of living in the city but am worried about debt. Do you all know anyone who commutes? If so, how is it working out for them? I appreciate any advice you can give! 🙂

Also waitlisted, interviewed 3/4. I called the admissions office today and they gladly looked up my file. Letters went out yesterday with WL rank.

That was relatively quick. Glad they are releasing the WL ranking when they said they would

I heard it's Dean Foxwell's policy to get the decisions out by April 30. Considering the lag time of others, I appreciate the timeliness of this school. Hoping for some IS love if/when the WL moves!

Is there a class of 2019 FB group? I see an institutional page, but nothing that users can actually post on.

Any idea how many students the school waitlists?

So I sent a LOI/update to UMD Admissions over a month ago and never received an acknowledgement. I was wondering whether it would be appropriate to send another update at this point to let them know that I am still interested in an acceptance from their waitlist. I don't want to pester them, but I don't want to appear aloof.
This whole process reminds me a bit of dating. 🙄

curious if any march interviewees were accepted at all

I interviewed in March 11th found out end of march with acceptance.

I heard from last year class (MS1) and previous years (MS2) that quite a few of students from WL got accepted. Hang in there.

Recent events in Baltimore making anyone reconsider? :nailbiting:
It certainly made me feel more confident in my decision to withdraw, though it was not the deciding factor.

Waitlisted folks, you might have a better chance of acceptance now, as I suspect this may prompt some people to withdraw.

I have many friends and family in Baltimore right now, and while the violence and destruction of the protests are certainly alarming, they will pass, and the community and city authorities will hopefully start mending fences that have been broken for a long time. Baltimore has a lot of problems, but even people who have been mugged multiple times will tell you it's The Greatest City in America. It says so on all the benches. 😉
I'd love to get in off the waitlist, but I'd hate for it to be because accepted students had the wrong idea about my favorite town. <3 Baltimore, and may she heal her wounds quickly.

If you think this issue couldn't come up in any city in america you have another thing coming. Nothing wrong with Baltimore and I feel very safe here as a student.

Has anyone on the waitlist got that letter that tells you whether you're in the upper half and bottom half?

Made the difficult decision to withdraw from here today. Best of luck to everyone in the class of 2019!

Does Maryland require a deposit to hold a seat in the class? Just want to make sure I didn't miss anything!

No you don't need a deposit. All the information should be in the offer letter that you got. Make sure you turned in all your paperwork 🙂

Waitlist bottom 1/2
IS/ 30/ 3.8

Oh well +pity+

What does "lower" half mean...ddoes that mean closer to being accepted or further away?

Maryland's a lost cause. I heard there is virtually no WL movement. I'll still respond to keep me on the list but I'm really happy with my acceptances, so no hard feelings! The only thing that stings is the loss of IS tuition. Sigh...

Someone already got off the waitlist this year apparently.

Before they got the standing letter? I'm not saying that's impossible, but I do smell either a rat or an exception to the rule.

Numerous friends of mine have been accepted off the WL throughout april - not sure how it works.

Bottom half of waitlist letter arrived Saturday. Accepted to a school I would be equally happy to attend, but very likely would have jumped ship for IS tuition. Bummed, but happy to be 99% certain where I'm going in August.

Upper half waitlist. It doesn't make me feel too optimistic when the upper half has ~115 people on it, but I will stay.

Hahaha I'm in the same boat
Everything happens for a reason 🙂
