2014-2015 University of Maryland Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Ugh I'm with you guys. My stats are only a little below their averages but I haven't heard back yet. I hope they give us all a chance! There's a thousand reasons why I would like to go to this school.
The IS tuition and being close to home would be really nice but I'm getting less and less optimistic and starting to think I'm gonna end up elsewhere :/

What are things that you wish you knew before you matriculated to Maryland? Also, how do you feel about not having pass/fail?
I know it was addressed to someone else but i'm also a MS1 here. It really is no different in pass/ fail schools. Those schools will still keep a numerical score and provide ranking information to residencies. If anything ABC grading is more transparent and allows you to be more realistic in your goals. Maryland does not grade on a curve if you earn an A you get an A and it has not been competitive in the least in my limited experience here at MD

Just to add on to my last post... What you guys should be looking for is a school that has block scheduling (Maryland, Temple off the top of my head) it is really nice to not have 4-5 tests in the same week in different classes. Don't worry about how it' graded, you will be graded either way!

Can you explain how a blocking schedule works vs non-blocking schedules? Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, but I'm not familiar with this.
Block scheduling means that you only take one class at a time. So right now we are in the first block which is Structure & Development which is basically anatomy (and yes cadaver lab). After that block is over we move on to our next class. Some schools will combine things into one semester so you'll be taking multiple classes with somewhat independent tests. As I'm sure you had in undergrad, this will lead to hell weeks of multiple tests.

Is anyone else having trouble checking the status of their secondary? Could they possibly be updating statuses?

Gah, best of luck to both of us, then!! Hopefully it means no news is good news, for now...

lol this is how I'm taking things at every school right now. I've seen ppl get rejections from the other schools I've applied to, so hoping the silence is a good thing...not a rejection waiting lol

Hi guys! Anyone know if these interviews are open file or closed file? Thanks!

Just as a reference guys I got my interview Feb 17th and got accepted on June 6th. It's a long and drawn out process and you aren't out until they tell you no!

For context, would you mind sharing when your application was complete?

I dont remember an exact date but it was some time in August I believe

Just for reference for other people:

IS, "completed" 8/27 (never actually got an email but this was the date when every component was submitted), II on 9/26
Earliest interview date on the calendar was December 3rd

I just decided to throw my hat into the applicant pool here and I'm submitting my secondary today. I really like this school, but I was on the fence about applying here since I had applied to ~20 other schools. I decided to go for it, but I'm wondering if it is too late for me to be seriously considered for an interview at the very least. I have north of 200 hours of shadowing, and ~3 years of research (no pubs though). GPA is 3.85, and MCAT is 41. Also, I'm OOS. Should I go for it?

Great stats and EC's, what kind of answer are you fishing for here? 😉

I guess whenever I look at these threads, I worry there aren't enough spots for late candidates like me.

If you were a low-average stat applicant, I'd say you might not have a good shot since this is a state school. But I think with your stats and ECs you have a pretty good shot at an II. Although most ppl applied pretty early this year, I've seen ppl who applied months after me get II and I'm just sitting here waiting lol but I'm a lower stat IS applicant so I think you have a better shot even being OOS. Best of luck to you, Maryland is a great school!

Interviewed today. Absolutely my top choice - I'd kill to go here.

Seconding this! Just finished interviewing - had two faculty interviews and it was an absolute blast. The facilities there are incredible as well, I had no idea how much they offered until my tour! Curriculum is great (Block scheduling, class 8-12, early patient exposure) and the students and faculty were all very friendly. :fingerscrossed:

😀

Yep totally agree! I interviewed today too! I loved the fact that the students are so grounded and seem to be very easy going. Also if you're interested in research UMD really gives you many opportunities to pursue that as well.
To everyone that I interviewed with today: it was really great meeting y'all! Good luck on the rest of your interviews and hopefully I see you guys in the fall next year!! 🙂

Here's some info from the interview day: UMD doesn't have an in-state quota. 25% are OOS.

For IS applicants: did you mail in the residency form around the same time as your secondary? Is it needed before offers of interviews/acceptance are made?
I sent mine in around the same time as my secondary, but it doesn't have any impact on interview offers (since you check off a residency box on the actual secondary). I'm not sure about before acceptance offers. If I remember correctly, some scholarship offers are made at the same time as acceptances, and these may depend on residency status, though I'm not sure.

I mailed it about a week later. I think it says this form is necessary in case you get accepted so they can see if you qualify for IS tuition so I can't imagine it affecting whether or not you get an II. Just send it ASAP so you don't forget about it lol

II!

But next available date wasn't until January, yikes!

II today! OOS, complete 25-September. I am thrilled to potentially meet these guys:

Any feedback from the folks who interviewed here. How was the interview day? Is it MMI format? Any advise or information. Have mine interview here soon. Thanx

It's two individual interviews, either both with faculty or one faculty and one student. As the email says, your interviews could be in the morning or afternoon. If they're in the afternoon, I think they'll call you so you don't have to come in so early.

Thankyou for the feedback.

OOS II this afternoon. Was very excited to have the opportunity. 35 MCAT (12, 11, 12), 3.83 cGPA, 3.82 sGPA, top 10 undergrad school

For anyone who has interviewed here already, when do you find out what time your interview is that day? thanks!
