2014-2015 University of Massachusetts Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know if it is possible/acceptable to email the admissions office here to see if earlier interview dates open up? Mine isn't until February and it would be nice if I could move it up.

Well, I did the work for you when I got the interview here a while back. They said they don't do this, which is a bummer since I work less than an hour away. I was hoping to do this for my end of jan interview.

Thanks for answering this for me. It's a shame that they don't do that.

What did everyone think of the interview process at UMASS this year? Do they still give a great lunch followed by an awesome detailed tour?

Yes. You're interviewed in groups (AM and PM group). Interview then lunch and tour OR lunch and tour followed by your interview. Lunch was pretty good. Tour was equally as great. UMASS has impressive facilities and a really great feel to it.

Anyone interviewing tomorrow.....

Are you a student adcom? Would you be able to give us hopeful but neurotic SDNers a rough estimate of how many II's have been given out already and/or about how many still remain? 😀

I liked UMass a lot more than I expected to. I didn't realize how new all the facilities are. I also looked around online and found a lot of faculty doing research in the area I am interested in. This is probably my top choice outside the top 10 ranked schools.

Hope the wait isn't too too long.

Has anyone who interviewed on 10/9 heard anything? How long does it take to hear from UMASS?

Accepted today. Interviewed early December. Shocked to hear so soon, but i felt like I completely killed the MMI, so maybe that's why. Definitely a better interview style for me.

Congrats! Did u interview on the 11th?

Accepted today! UMASS is my 1st choice so I was ecstatic to receive the acceptance email. First, I want to say thank you UMASS for giving me a chance to fulfill my dream. Second, I am a non-traditional applicant so I want to let everyone know that hard-work and persistence does pay off in the end. Third, I included my timeline so everyone can have an idea.

Completed: 9/12/14
Interview Invite: 10/3/14
Interviewed: 12/11/14
Accepted: 12/19/14

I had to say that I was lucky with UMASS because everything worked out nicely for me. My secondary apps was marked completed shortly after I called the office (tips: please understand that the people at the office is very busy with arranging interviews and answering million of questions, so be nice when you talk to them). I definitely enjoyed the MMI more than expected (English is my second language so MMI was definitely a challenge for me). Overall, I think I did ok with the MMI and I did have fun with it. Some advice for the MMI format:
a) Most important: always explore both sides of the argument or question being asked. Even if you don't agree with the opposite point of view, do acknowledge it and say out loud why you disagree with it.
b) Always try to make the connection between the scenarios and your experience in real life. Utilize any working, volunteering, personal experience to strengthen your arguments.
c) Always smile and be courteous to your interviewers, be happy that you were selected to receive an interview

This is probably the best day I have in a long time, I can really enjoy my holiday this year. For those who still in the cycle, please keep a positive mind, I know it's hard but you will succeed in the end.

Same here. Accepted within one week post-interview.

Definitely not. My adviser says they methodically plod through applications and you just have to wait.

When were you complete?

Mid September, I think. I'm just getting a little anxious because it seems like they're already scheduling really late into the season

From what I have heard, a late application to UMass doesn't hurt that much in getting an interview. You’re more likely to get interviewed here than not, so keep your fingers crossed. They interview into March and maybe April I think.

Btw, what month did you hear that they’re scheduling now?

Well just based on this thread, haha. Some Feb interviews were scheduled in November so I figure they may be further along by now

Cool. And just to edit my last reply--it looks like they only interviewed into late Feb and maybe first week of March.

Just an update for you guys, only 10 people got accepted so far, so just be patient and keep your hopes up.

can anyone who's already interviewed comment on when the day usually ends? Thanks!

It depends on which group of interview. There are 2 groups: 9am and 10:30am. The 9am will have their MMI first then have lunch + tour. Their day will end around 3pm. However, the 10:30am will have lunch + tour + MMI (around 3pm) so you guys won't get out at least until 5pm. Both groups have lunch and tour together.

Accepted ~2 weeks ago, interviewed 10/9

I'm still waiting for an II too 🙁 I work here on campus and I've been seeing several students getting interviewed so I have been losing hope. However, a lot of these students getting interviewed are MD/PhD applicants. Out of the 6 interview dates left, I wonder how many still have space.

*Wow, this thread is so dry*

Accepted! I was accepted on 12/19/14; interviewed on 12/11/14. I was shocked by the quick response, I thought it would take months before I heard back. The best advice I have for anyone who will be interviewing is to be yourself and don't make up answers that you think the interviewer would like to hear. I know everyone says this but it's honestly what helped me do well on the MMI. When you speak from the heart, the interviewer will notice that your responses are unique and genuine. Part of my job includes interviewing people for lab positions. I get tired of hearing the same thing, so I can understand how the interviewers must feel. Good luck everyone!

Hmm silence here since interviewing in Oct. Trying to stay hopeful but the wait is brutal

still waiting to receive an II here... any chance that this will happen at this point in the cycle?

Definitely-- I was in the same boat until last week. They booked me for late Feb so it's possible!

That's cool. By chance, did you get to see which interview dates were still left? Or did they just assign you an interview date?

Interview Invite! Complete almost seven MONTHS ago! Sent an update a few weeks ago. Interviewing in March. I thought my cycle was over!!

Same! I am a reapplicant btw, and I interviewed here last year around the same date (early March). There were no spots left when I interviewed and there was already a long waitlist...I loved Umass when I went last year but it was just crazy that so many people were interviewing that day and almost none of us were going to get an acceptance. Thoughts on this year being different anyone?

I am also a reapplicant and interviewed last year in the fall!

Do you mind commenting on how you obtained the data that all slots were already filled and that the waiting list was long by early March of last year? Were you told this in your interview? Just curious because I just received an II for early March and I'm trying to gauge if I still have any chance of acceptance. Any advice would be appreciated.
Good luck to all!

Lurking for awhile, but finally joined because of how empty this thread is. I was complete mid August, received an II in Oct for the end of January. I am excited, and less stressed after reading good things about the MMI!
Good luck everyone!

I'm not applying this cycle but does anyone know if umms accepts biochem 1 as a replacement for orgo 2?

Hey does anyone know what the Umass med school social scene is like? I researched a few clubs/bars in Worcester and was wondering if the med students went there?
