The instructions for Community Service and Leadership state not to include anything prior to 2011. However, there is no such stipulation on the Patient Exposure section. So, do you all think I can include ALL of my patient exposure, even that from before 2011? I have "enough" without doing so, but I want to be as complete as possible. Any insight would be appreciated.

So, they rejected my proposed class for the diversity requirement. Looks like I'm registering for another class!

I sent them my research paper I wrote for that class and they decided to accept it! No other class needed

I would! It doesn't say you can't and you want to give a complete picture. Go for it!

Also, I remember attending a meeting where the dean of admissions talked about admission requirements. They like to see experiences within 4 years of applying. This would would mean experiences back to 2010. Also from my brother who is attending the U this fall, I know that they accept at least shadowing farther back than that, probably also applies to patient exposure, especially because it is not explicitly stated otherwise.

I am including patient exposure from around 2008. I think as long as you aren't including stuff from high school you are good.

I was beginning to think that they were just doubting my ability to follow directions properly... So, I've received four so far. Let's see who can get the most from them!

Other Supervisor: This letter may be from any individual of the applicant’s choice who has supervised their involvement in academics, athletics, research, volunteering, or employment (including military). The letter must clearly state that the letter writer supervised/directed the applicant’s activity and include a detailed description of the activity. We will accept a professor letter to meet this requirement. A letter from a premedical advisor or a peer will NOT be accepted.

86% of accepted students have non-medical community services
95% have medical/clinical community services
98% have research experiences

Shouldn't it be all 100%?

Those stats are what are listed in AMCAS. Maybe 2% of applicants didn't list research at all even though they had it. Or maybe they put it under another category.

Followed by "Overlapping or double dipping experiences may be viewed negatively if done in excess."

I suppose the "excess" predicate helps to define things for us a bit but I'm not a fan of such subjective, contrary language!

I only double dipped one of my activities so I would be above average in community service. The rest I could have double dipped but didn't need to and decided not to. Their instructions are vague. First they say you should. Then they say don't be excessive. Huh?

I wouldn't worry too much about which letter goes with which category.

If it were me, I would put that experience in both categories just because it is so lengthy that it makes sense to draw attention to it in both categories. I think you can double dip maybe 3 times and be fine. But only put an experience in two categories max of course. And I would only be double dipping if you are going to be above average in any category that is double dipped and hopefully all of them if possible.

When talking to Dr. Chan, he made it clear that it's important if you are splitting up activities, to make sure you split what you did as well. If you were volunteering for 6 months somewhere great, but if you were only in a leadership position the last three, don't try and overdo it saying it was ALL leadership time. Hope that makes sense.

Repeated the description. They are all in my primary anyway. No need to get fancy 🙂

i wonder if they use the activities from the secondary app just to weed applicants out who aren't average or above in 5 areas... then use amcas descriptions for actual activity info...

They also use Umichigan essay prompt word for word

So did anyone tell their letter writers to say how long you were volunteering specifically like the U says they have to? Kinda lame if they ask my clinical supervisors to send addendums. That's the point of the contact info for supervisors on AMCAS. right?

Agreed. I think you should be fine. I can't see them rejecting your letters for something they can look up in 5 seconds on your primary app.
