2014-2015 University of Utah Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
did you wait until all letters were received before you click submit forms? Or once the payment is received ....
I didn't wait, and five days later I got the email that said, "Thank you for completing your secondary materials for the University of Utah School of Medicine. You will be contacted in 4 to 6 weeks regarding the status of your application for our school.

We thank you for your patience as we process your application."

All of my letters and my payment were marked as complete by then.

Thank you! payment was processed immediately this morning, very quickly... submitted!

Oh Utah... I applied to and interview here last year. I listed a certain class for my diversity requirement last year and they happily accepted it and processed my application without any questions. Today I received an email telling me that they had a problem with the class I posted for my diversity requirement... Grrr. Looks like I might be going back to college to take that class. And while I'm there, I may as well take stats, I always wanted to.

The U said I could contest their decision with an email so I'll try that and see if that works.

Frustrating...sorry to hear that. Hopefully you can contest it with what you just told us here. Remind them that they accepted it last year and that you're graduated (not planning on taking more classes so it's a huge hassle). Good luck!

Letters are marked as complete.. Names and date listed no notes... That means I'm all set right? ... Woo last secondary! Lets go guys :soexcited:

Thanks! Yes that's my plan. I'll let you all know what happens

Just sign up for a diversity class this fall semester and that will count towards your diversity requirement. Not a big deal...I personally wouldn't appeal it.

By the way - I am happy to answer any of your questions. I am a current MS1.

The point is that @Ginred wasn't planning on taking classes, as far as I understood. So it is kind of a big deal.

It's one general education course......anyways, you're free to do whatever you want. Last year, the same ordeal happened to me, so personally, that's how I would approach it.

It is ironic that a "diversity class" is a requirement. You simply cannot study how to relate to other people.

How you liking the iPads?

How you liking the iPads?
It's cool to have an ipad, but I don't really use it. A lot of my classmates are using their ipads to take notes during lecture, but I am not. I like to use my PC laptop. We do have to take all of our tests on the ipads, and our first test is tomorrow. We have exams every Monday, covering all of the previous week's materials.

I love having the iPad, but probably cause that's how I took notes through undergrad so it wasn't much of an adjustment... I do still used laptop a lot for writing compilations of notes and a variety of tasks though so I would def suggest you still have a computer of sorts besides the iPad. As a side note I figured out how to use the iPad as a second screen and that was pretty fun haha

Just heard back from the U:

"Thank you for providing us with the requested information regarding course title(s) and description(s) for the required pre-medical course(s). The Admissions Committee has reviewed and approved your submission to meet our requirements."

Glad I appealed that and I'm glad the committee was judicious! I'm done with undergrad so it's nice to not have to fit that into my schedule and pay for it.

Or just put something down for summer 2015 and take it only if necessary...
Thankfully, this is already resolved. How sad would it be though to get in off the wait list and not have taken the class? So no matriculation. It's better to be proactive.

Complete 8/11
I was complete 8/08 I believe.

Here is the email for everyone who hasn't gotten theirs yet:
"he University of Utah School of Medicine Admissions Committee has completed their review of your application and would like to invite you to interview at our school.

The Assessment Day process will consist of 2 one-on-one interviews, Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI), and a Moral and Ethical Problem Exam (MEPE).

To schedule your Assessment Day, access the Admissions System Portal at http://secure.uuhsc.utah.edu/som/admissions/application/. This is the same site where you completed your secondary materials. Enter your eight-digit AAMC ID number and your password.

From this site you will be able to access the scheduling form and the Qualifications for Medical School Admissions, Continuation, and Graduation (Technical Standards).

You may select from the following dates: September 8, 12, 15, 19. Select three dates in the order of your preference.

This form must be completed and submitted within three business days. An Admissions representative will contact you to confirm your Assessment date within two weeks of submission.

It is mandatory that you email us a current passport-size/style photgraph to [email protected] 3 working days prior to your interview date, this will remain in your applicant file.

You must read and acknowledge your understanding of the "qualifications" by submitting the Technical Standards prior to your Assessment Day.

Your Assessment Day will begin promptly at 7:30 a.m. and end by 3:30 p.m. Please arrive between 7:15 and 7:30 a.m. at the School of Medicine, Office of Admissions, Room 1C029.

We look forward to meeting you.

Note: You are advised to dress appropriately for the weather and for walking throughout campus."

And yes, it does sound like they are putting us through the gauntlet.

To those who got interviews! Would you mind sharing stats and whether or not you are in state?

Congrats!!

ii invite earlier today as well! I am a re-app however and when I click on the interview invitation link it takes me to the assessment day schedule form that is completely filled out from my last year's application with no options to input new information or current dates. When you click the "ok" button on the page does that submit your form or does that take you to another page that allows you to input new information? As fun as it would be to interview in the past I think I would rather have a current interview date so I'm hesitant to click "ok" and submit on accident haha. Anyone else having this problem? I would call the office but they aren't open until Monday. Being a neurotic pre-med and all...well you folks know haha.

Congrats to those who got II!

Do you guys know how to withdraw your secondary application? I can't get my letters together before the deadline since my school does Committee letters and won't be able to upload individual letters 🙁 Do I just let the deadline pass or withdraw my secondary application?

For those who got the secondary, are they asking if you are a full time student and taking classes this year?

So...I still haven't got my application completely submitted into AMCAS. I'm awaiting a couple of LORs. I am re-applying this year, and I thought it would be the same as last year for U of U. I didn't realize they changed so many things and that it's now an advantage to apply early.

Does anyone have any advice or guidance here? This is my number one choice, and I'm worried I may have taken too long to apply. I'm IS, am above average in 5 of their 7 categories, I do have all the letters I need (if not all uploaded yet), my GPA is good, and I'm still awaiting my score on the MCAT.

Just submit ASAP. You already know that though.

I'm a little slow going on the UofU app...good to see that some are getting IIs! Complete about a week ago, just playing the waiting game now 🙂. What are some of everybody's "pluses" for going to the U? What do you think makes it a good med school? (like to hear other's feedback as I try and make some of my decisions....)

Well, a big one obviously is that this is my only State school and IS tuition + lower cost of living in Utah is attractive. It's close to family, my brother just started there. I like the integrated curriculum and while a lot of schools do that nowadays, it is still a plus for me. It is a fairly large academic medical center, the only one in the region and there are a lot of research opportunities from what I've seen. That's some of the reasons.

Question for current med students. How favorably are non-traditional applicants viewed / How well are non-traditional applicants represented in matriculated classes at UUSCOM?
(By non-traditional, I mean in-state 30+ years old, master's/PhD and/or career experience in other fields, postbac pre-med, GPA repair work, etc.)

Our class definitely feels like it has its share of non-traditional students. The average age of our class is higher than I would have guessed (I want to say 25 and change or 26). Seems like we have various students who have prior experience in other fields as well. This is purely my own conjecture but I would say that being a non-traditional student does nothing to diminish your chances.

Interview invite this morning!!! (IS by the way.) I think I'm going to go with Sept 12- anyone else planning on being there on the 12th?

Also, how have you all approached the passport photo thing? Did you get a passport photo done or...?

I have a photo that I've used for all of the other schools to which I've applied, and in it I am not completely facing forward, my shoulders are angled a bit. Call me neurotic, but I wonder what you all think about what I should do- get a different photo, or just err on the side of liberality and not worry too much about it.

What did everyone else do for this?

I chose the 12th. No confirmation yet though. I am just going to use the pic I have been sending all the other schools. I took it on my iPhone haha.

I am just using the same photo that I used for all of the other apps, the email just said a passport size/style photograph. It's probably fine if your shoulders are a little tilted, they just want to have a face to match the app right? Anyway, I'll be going on the 8th (so soooon) it just got confirmed today. Good luck with your interviews on the 12th!

#selfie

Maybe we'll see you on the 12th! I'll be the guy in the suit with the really nervous look!

I was thinking the same thing, that this is more just a guideline to ensure that my face can be readily recognized. Good luck on the 8th! Give us a post-assessment day assessment when you finish up!

Regarding the Moral and Ethical Problem Exam (MEPE)- I came across a really cool resource from the AMA a month or two ago: a database with hundreds of ethical scenarios and a discussion of them. Topics include informed consent, patient-physician relationship dynamics, and surrogate decision making. This website has given me some good insight into healthcare ethics and I hope that it is helpful for some of you whether for your U of U interview day or for interviews with other schools.

Here's the website link:

Is the moral exam on interview day? Is it like a written test multiple choice what?
