2014-2015 University of Utah Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Confirmation phone call just now. I'll be there on 9/12. So soon!!!
Plus one! I asked Goldie (lady on the phone) if she knew anything about the MEPE (never hurts to ask right?) and she said that she knew as much as I did. I believe this was already said, but it will last an hour after lunch. She said that the 2 interviews and the MMI will be in the morning and then the exam will take place after lunch (they have a good cafeteria by the way!)

I'll see you there on the 12th @daenschl !

Will those with II's please share stats and dates completed? I didn't get the complete email until 8/27.

Hey everyone, I'm also currently an MS1 here at Utah. If you have any questions about applications or the school, feel free to message me or direct any questions my way in the thread. Congrats to those of you with interview invites and to those still waiting, don't worry, it's really early and the application process is a marathon not a sprint!

Interview invite today!!!! IS 31, 3.95, complete email 8-21

I walked by the admissions office yesterday and saw a few of you post-interview standing in the hallway. I shivered at the thought of being in your shoes last year - haha the overall application process is brutal, but you guys can do it! Ya'll looked sharp - good luck!

Dear everyone here-

Are any of you taking a gap year right now? If so, please PM me, I have some questions and need some advice. Also, for the M1's, if any of you took a gap year, please PM me as well. Thanks a bunch.

I'm confused - are you applying right now or waiting till next year?

Thanks for those who messaged me with their support and input, very helpful. I'm applying right now by the way Gomer

PLEASE POST STATS AND DATE OF COMPLETION E-MAIL WHEN NOTIFYING THE REST OF US OF AN II. THANKS!

Honestly stats are not super helpful at this school either, they def. look at the wholistic applicant. Our class has a wide range of stats but I feel the personalities and "feel" of the class was very well selected for. 🙂

Do I need to bring anything with me for my interview tomorrow? Copies of my application or anything? I don't really want to haha.

Lol okay buddy, good luck with that. It was just a request and most people are not scared to share if their stats are good enough to get in. Every school is a stat ***** at some level or another, especially for extending interviews. Why do you think the U takes the top score from each section of the MCAT? Or pays several professors over a million a year? Schools artificially boosts stats to gain more prestige... So it must matter to someone making decisions. It is not my favorite process either but stats matter to all schools.
Chill out man, some people don't feel comfortable sharing stats in a public forum.

good point, then again what school nowadays doesn't use a "wholistic" process in their admissions process?

GO BYU!!!!! It is nice being nationally ranked in football!!!!!!!!!

sure most schools use it but some schools use it differently/more than other school, at least that is how it was for me last year. The point is though that at this point there are more important things to be focused on than stats and as II go out I doubt you'll see any pattern in stats and who is getting them. The U looks at many factors other than metrics for the II's, metrics never hurt but they are no where near the main factor here. I can tell you that my class has a wide range of MCAT/GPA's from mid 20's to high 30's, from low GPA's to stellar ones. This is can be seen to from the fact that the UofU's (again as of last year) avg MCAT and GPA's tended to be a little on the lower side. Again, stats mean something for sure but the U is very particular in looking at the depth of learning that you explained from your experiences, how you come across in the interview (if it is like last year the U tends to weight the interview higher than other schools that I interviewed at), how careful you were writing your essays, the depth of experience, etc. It's an anxiety ridden process but worrying about other's stats just make's it worse, remember that stat's wise there will always be people better or at the same level, often the decisions come down to simply who the schools "liked more" personality wise, who they feel will best fit into the environment they have fostered, etc... basically don't get caught up in who's getting II and who's not, who's getting acceptances and who's not... just worry about your prep and keeping yourself sane during the process. 🙂

Not trying to fuel the fire here, but I third the opinion that the U is particularly interested in the whole applicant, not just stats. Some schools say that but they really only take 3.8+ and 35+ so they can say they're the "most competitive," but the U says stats aren't everything, they really mean it. Like zhopv10 said, our current MS1 class has a huge range of stats but the class meshes very well together as far as personality and outlook. It's exceptionally clear that when the U selects classes, they make sure your stats are good enough so they think you can handle the work load of medical school, but once that has been established they are much more interested in who you are as a person than what numbers are printed on your app.

You'll also find once you get to med school that GPA/MCAT are often pretty poor indicators of success in medicine. They are a very small piece of a much larger picture. Like zhopv10 said, the key to surviving an application cycle is to worry about everyone else who is applying as little as possible. Focus on you and how to best sell yourself. There's a reason you want to be a doctor and why you care about people enough to go through applying. Expressing that is priority number one, not whether your GPA/MCAT fall into a preconceived "cut-off" range.

Good luck to everyone interviewing tomorrow!

The U also isn't a highly ranked school.

Didn't our dean say that we have some of the best doctors in the country...as far as health care and patient satisfaction is concerned? From what I understood at orientation, most of our doctors are in the top 10% of the country. I think that says something...

Good luck in your interview today guys!! Any advice for the rest of us would be much appreciated!

Great feedback, thanks! I do believe for the U it is more than just lip service.

Today was really fun. Great to meet you guys. There isn't much advice to give to be honest. Know your application and be able to speak articulately. It wasn't half as scary as I had imagined.

Is there any information at all about the moral and ethical problems exam? I am trying to figure out a way to prepare, but I am coming up with nothing much. Anybody have any information about any other schools that do these during the interview? I don't know how to prepare for it.

how many stations on the MMI? 8 for 8 mins? Just wondering if it is a FULL MMI or just a couple of stations

By the way, it was nice meeting everyone at interview day! @Ginred @ScentOfPeace (although I don't exactly know who you are)
Yeah, I wasn't sure who @ScentOfPeace was either, but I've narrowed it down to two people from last week. No worries though, your identity will not be publicly guessed at in this forum.
And @daenschl , good luck with your 1,000 interviews! I'm almost inspired to convert my profile picture to a penguin...

Anyone have a good way to study for the Ethics Exam?

Google University of Washington Bioethics. I did it this morning and it is the second link. It helped me out when I was applying last year. No guarantees it helps but it couldn't hurt.

I would agree that this is a good way to prepare. Read the case studies on that website.

I'm curious who you think I am. PM me.

i feel the same way... advisor said NEVER double dip... should've double dipped LOL

yay for an II, now these little holistic hippies better let me in after an all day interview! I'm jk, this really is a good school and I'm glad to see medicine overall is making a shift towards an emphasis on the importance of a good bedside manner. I just don't believe it cam be assessed by an few hours of interviewing. Then again, I can't think of what possibly can.
