I thought you only had to be above average in 5/7 so wouldn't you still be okay? Or are you saying the double dip puts you below average in less than 5 catergories? I was complete in early August and haven't heard anything (IS). I am above average in all categories except one.

Yes you just need 5/7... I decided not to double dip and still have 6/7,. But I feel maybe the dip would've been better with 7/7... Either way we will probably see something soon. All of Utah's box checking is kinda a turnoff for me tho

Amen, I got an II from the U but the hoops they make you jump through to even interview are ridiculous. If it is a sign of what is to come in their med school, I am not interested in attending. Are they incapable of making an inference in the LOR or reading the freaking primary application? I hope it is just an intense screening process and then they welcome you with open arms and treat you like a peer upon acceptance because this busy work is total BS.

Take it easy guys. Anyway, how many people do ya'll think are going to get accepted prior to March this year? I felt like Dr. Chan was pretty ambiguous about it.

What do you mean by that? Is there a set number of people they take after March?

No, but they accept they typically accept a majority of their class around March. Last year approximately 25% got in before March.

I thought I saw it posted somewhere, but I think Dr. Chan said at my interview that he is hoping to accept closer to 50% of the class before March but might be bogged down with the new assessment system. He said we should try to be patient. Hah! Patient!:joyful:

I think this was probably a lie as part of their over-defensiveness. The only way they could actually "have a spot in med school" is by EDP (or, like you implied, DO school) and you can see that this person has applied to several schools. Clearly they regret whatever they said based on all of the MEOWs on this page now.

It is true, I do regret what I said. It is pointless to get feisty in a random online chat. Yes I applied to a top DO school in hopes of receiving a scholarship, and to have a backup plan in place so I can decline interview invites as interviewing is an expensive and time consuming hobby. No scholarship, just an acceptance offer but it is nice to have a spot in medical school already. Good luck to you cowgirls, there is a huge need for good physicians out there. I can't think of better way to admit I was wrong then to post MEOW MEOW MEOW!!!! so hopefully you don't hold it against me for getting my meow on. While I should have been more tactful, I still think the basic premise of having a real conversation instead of simply regurgitating political correctness would suit SDN better. Every school has pros and cons and it is important to discuss them.
 
Just got denied here...turned in my secondary in late July. Far above average in all EC, leadership, etc. 29 MCAT and 3.65 cGPA 3.25 sGPA In-state applicant. Thought they interviewed all in-state applicants that met their 5/7 and had at least a 3.2 and a 7+ in each MCAT section...maybe they changed it...

Sorry to hear it. I'm pretty sure they changed this with their recent policy change. Now that they only offer a total of 500 interviews, it'd be difficult to offer everyone an interview who met those requirements.

Dr. Chan said at the interview that they have previously interviewed closer to 550-600 a year (last year it was somewhere around 570) but that this year he is capping it at 500.
 
They also opened the application to OOS (beyond Idaho)
 
Right, the number interview may be a little less but the big thing is that the number of applicants increased dramatically.

But this should have no effect on in-state applicants since 82% of the class must be in state and the # of in-state applicants shouldn't increase much at all. Really the odds this year are much better since the pool of in-state applicants shouldn't be much different than previous years, while there are 20 extra spots in the class. The out of state applicants are simply competing with themselves, not with in-state...

For a seat in the class this is true, but as they decreased the number of interviews and increased the applicant pool they are drawing people to interview (even if OOS and IS are completely independent) getting an interview presumably for an IS applicant became more competitive...

This is true. Dr. Chan said they have about double the applications they had last year, but most of the increase came from OOS applicants.
But let's remember that the medical school application process is always an opaque one. Some people get rejected and others interviewed and accepted, and sometimes it is hard to tell the difference between applicants. Getting the metrics and numbers of EC's right helps but it never guarantees anything.
 
Anyone have trouble logging into their secondary application? I clicked on Forgot Password, but it said my AAMC ID and birth date did not match.

Denied here as well. Above average in 6/7, mcat ~29 gpa ~3.8 . I am confused about the IS and OOS thing here, because I don't know when they started considering graduates of Utah schools. For application purposes supposedly I am IS because I graduated from a school in Utah. I am not a Utah resident but I was planning to reclassify before matriculating (OOS tuition is 65K, IS 35K). I called the admissions office earlier this year and they assured me for application purposes I would be considered in the pool of 100 spots for IS applicants. 8 spots go to Idaho residents and the remaining 14 are for OOS (total 122 this year). I too thought I would get at least an interview. But its okay, I have other options.
 
I know I am being a bit neurotic but does anybody know how far along they have reviewed applications? I submitted mid-August and haven't heard anything yet. Maybe it is just too soon to expect anything? My application status says "submitted" so I'm guessing everything should be okay with my application.
 
You guys are still quite early in the process, no cause for alarm yet 🙂 they will extend interviews pretty far into the cycle.

Sorry to hear that. I really wonder how they are deciding who to interview and reject. Quality of experiences? Your stats are pretty average for the U so I'd imagine it has to be based on your experiences/PS.
 
So October first marks six weeks since I was complete. How is the U doing this year sticking to their timeline? Is a rejection in the pipeline for me?

When you type in your birth date, be sure that you are using the mm/dd/yyyy format; don't forget to use the dashes as well.
 
IS applying here too. Trying to be very patient, was completed 8/29th...

The whole process is seems like a crapshoot this year, but I wouldn't count yourself out until you are actually out.

Rejected on Friday, secondary submitted 8/6 but complete on 9/1 (had to wait for a U.-specific letter). Was well above the 'average' in all 7 categories. LizzyM ~70, IS. Good luck to everyone else!

Tell me about it. Their process this year must be totally different than in years past. Oh well. Time to continue the waiting game with the other 20+ schools I applied for!

I am pretty certain that they get more than 500 candidates that have qualifications like that. They just can't interview everyone. The decision who gets an interview and who does not is one of the great mysteries of the medical school application process, at every school. I know many people who have been swimming in II's from top 20 schools who got speedy rejections from mid tier schools and some who got II's nonetheless. Nobody understands!

Anyone have any interviews elsewhere? I just went to Milwaukee for the MCW and I really liked it, although I would prefer to stay in Utah as my family lives here and I would want IS tuition. I enjoyed interviewing at the U as well, and I hope that the results of the assessment day come earlier this year than they have in years past (March).

I have 8 interviews but haven't heard from Utah yet... Starting to get a little nervous.. I also interviewed at MCW last month and was really impressed hoping for an acceptance on the 15th. I know via a doctors schedule they are meeting this Friday to make admissions decisions ... Whatever that means

How was your interview at Utah? How would you compare it with MCW?

there are definitely pros and cons to both. For Utah, I think this is ultimately where I want to practice (I think...) so going to school here gives me good opportunities to make connections and practice with patients in the area, then of course IS tuition is significantly cheaper. I didn't get quite as good of a "feel" from Utah as I did at MCW. I felt like I was already accepted at MCW, and everyone was super chill. Every interviewee I talked to was cool, like I would hang out with them on the weekend or something. I don't know, for me, the cost and the location push me towards Utah. Milwaukee is surprisingly cool though, gotta love the cheese curds right?

did you apply to both MD and DO schools? JW, 8 interviews is a ton, congrats on that

MD only, they are on my md apps if you're interested. How would you compare the MCW interview with the Utah "gauntlet" interview?

only comparable in the one-on-one format. MCW was very laid back, (you only have to get there "between 10am-11am") the interviews were mostly conversational. I had one doctor and one student, and the student was more thorough and rigorous than the MD. Utah was much more rigorous from the get-go, and the group was much smaller (60 at MCW compared to 10-11 at Utah). The one-on-one interviews were fairly similar though, one MD and one MD/PhD in my case who were very nice, straighforward and conversational. No MMIs or MEPE at MCW either.
