2014-2015 University of Utah Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
can someone who has interviewed share a bit about how they prepared for the mmi?
You can't do much but just research MMI so you have an idea of the format, think about random "what if" situations and practice getting a coherent english sentence out on the spot hahaha 🙂 Something that helps me is to think of them as a game or a little puzzle (stupid but helps keep the nerves down especially when you can't specifically prepare)

As has been said before, something that at the very least helped me get into the right mindset (thinking about different viewpoints on various ethical situations) was the WashU bioethics portal. Just google that and look at the example case studies. While you probably won't get questions just like the situations in these case studies, they nicely showcase how to think about these kind of things.

This. I don't think anything other than being familiar with the format would have helped me on the MMIs.

Thanks guys! One website said you should practice speaking so you have a sense of time - was timing a concern/ challenge, or do you have a sense of how much time you have left in the scenario room?

I don't know, I didn't feel timing was an issue. As long as you strive to be succinct, it should work out. Then again, other people might tend to talk longer. Practicing definitely won't hurt. They do give you a signal when you are close to being done, but most of the discussion should already be over by then.

Has anybody applied to MD/PhD and received an interview? Secondary completed on 10/8 and no word of any kind yet.

I'm with daenschl... I did not find that time was an issue. Good luck!

I'd give it some time. 10/8 is pretty recent. There are people who applied in August and are just now getting IIs.

Does anyone know if Utah is open to updates pre II? Have been complete for 2+ months.

I agree with what everyone already said. Looking at the ethics scenarios on UW's website helped a lot. As for the time, I wouldn't worry too much about it. 7 minutes is plenty enough time to discuss the various issues in the ethical scenario. It's not like they are super long scenarios - just small paragraphs. Plus the interviewers ask follow up questions so you don't have to worry about talking for 7 minutes straight.

Got a hold letter pre interview a couple days ago. 🙁

Still the waiting game...no acceptances yet?
I don't believe so. It's my understanding that they start rolling in beginning or mid-November. I wonder if most of the OOS and Idaho applicants will hear back before March 15th since the school is only interviewing about 100 of these applicants as opposed to the 400 IS applicants

I submitted my MD/PhD secondary application on 9/24, and received my interview invitation on Oct 21st. So you will probably hear back in a couple of weeks.

To those with interview invites, did you guys get a complete email or did you go with the complete status on the secondary application page?

Edit: Ignore this post. I figured it out from the previous pages.

I'm gonna keep my Nov 5 guess, but my optimism is fading. It is going to be exhausting if I have to wait until March.
yes it is exhausting no matter how long you have to wait! It might be a good idea to find something to occupy your thoughts/time for the next six months beyond school. Students get great deals on season snow resort passes!

how long did it take for them to confirm your interview dates? It's been a few days for me and I haven't heard anything

On Tuesday I received the interview confirmation call for December 1st! I am super excited and nervous! It sounds like an intense day but the people that called seemed really nice and fun!

Does anyone know how many interview invitations are given out for md/phd applicants, and how many are accepted? Also, does in-state status matter for md/phd program?

To the best of my knowledge in state status does not make any impact on your application to the md/PhD program. Our class has 4 and 3 of them are OOS.

wow!!!!! I hope the best for everyone else as well!... I know what it feels like to be shot down, or have to face a long wait...keeping hanging in there, don't give up!!

Nice! Stats?
MCAT: National Average for accepted students.
GPA: Average for U of U accepted students.
From what I've heard so far, and from my experience... here are some suggestions (take it for what it's worth): GOOD letters of recommendation are a must (I had 10 of them sent to AMCAS, and they were mentioned specifically as setting me apart), follow the U of U's guide for 'self-assesment' and focus on the 'seven areas' (I tried to double the average accepted students' numbers in every category [except MCAT and GPA of course 🙂] ). I had extra experience beyond my undergraduate (i.e. don't give up if you don't get in right out of school), I've spent a few years in the military, and earned an MS degree. The Interview was also mentioned as an important point of my application (so prepare, but be confident and be sincere!).

Super excited to come back to Utah!! and go to the UofU!!!!
Hope to see some of you next fall!
(feel free to PM me if you really want any other 'stats' etc.)

Congrats man! Must feel great. When did you interview btw?

I just saw this on their facebook page:

"Congratulations to the first few members of the Class of 2019!!! I called them this morning and they were all extremely excited. This announcement kicks off our earliest acceptances here at the University of Utah School of Medicine.

Please remember that all applicants will learn their status by the end of March 2015 (and due to our new scoring system, the vast majority of acceptances will also be offered in March 2015 as well).

Have a great day! Stay warm out there!
- Dr. Chan"

So while some people did get accepted today, there may not be a lot of use in hoping a phone call will come any day now.
