2014-2015 University of Utah Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Have any other in-state applicants submitted their secondary in early sept and still waiting to hear back? I haven't received any II and it has been almost 12 weeks... Anyone else in the same boat?
My guess is that the bulk of applications were submitted around that time so it is taking them much longer to get back to people than their estimated 6 weeks. I was complete mid August and didn't hear back until mid October, about 8 weeks later, and it is probably taking them longer for people complete later. You are definitely still in the running!

Received the call today! I interviewed on Sept. 19th. I really hope a lot more of these calls go out sooner rather than later.
Congrats! and nice name by the way. Mind sharing your stats?

GPA- above avg for the U's matriculants

MCAT- above avg for the U's matriculants

I know this is vague, but I think if you are above these it's going to boil down to the rest of the app. I don't think it was my numbers that got me in (I know people with lower stats that got in before me, and people with higher stats that haven't heard back). I think it was my essays and PS along with ECs that sealed the deal (and great LORs). Dr.Chan also mentioned that my interviewers had good things to say.

I'm sorry if this isn't helpful, but I truly believe that the U walks the walk in their holistic approach (in other words, if your numbers are avg or above you don't have to worry about that aspect of your app).

Thanks!

Thank you. Yeah it seems like they are pretty holistic. Congrats again.

It's been almost 8 weeks and I haven't heard of the supposed 4-6 weeks post-secondary decision....

You and the rest of us. A lot of people are at the 12+ week mark with no word, so I wouldn't hold your breath! Seems they are a bit slower in the processing than they anticipated!

This is kind of an odd question but were there many female interviewees when you interviewed? When I interviewed there was only one female out of the 12 interviewees but the medical school class is roughly 50/50 I believe. I was just wondering if the numbers were like this for others.

My interview date was 2 out of 12.

I think there were 5 or 6 the day I interviewed.

you guys send thank you notes? Dr. Chan seemed to say it really wasn't necessary almost advised against it haha

On December 1 we had 1/12. I think it's great to have diversity, but if the applicant/interview pool is truly 4/12 female or less, I would expect the accepted class to reflect that.

Just venting as a white Utah male... 🙂

The principle idea of the diversity in a class is to more closely approximate the population proportions not necessarily the application proportions...this way you can train physicians to better serve the population in the community.

Ahh the wait to hear is deadly. late september here.

Are you IS or OOS

I guess I will chime in here finally (sorry for lurking so long). I am a second time applicant. Interviewed on 11/7/14. IS applicant. I recognize some of the same users from last years thread. I hope this year is our year!

Ah Jungy, good to hear from you old boy!

congrats daenschl! anyone know if there have been any OOS acceptances?

does anyone know if all of the OOS interviews have been offered?

I don't think they have all been offered because I was told a few days ago I was still under active consideration and I am OOS. I don't see why they would keep people in consideration and not put them on the U's hold if they didn't plan to give out any more IIs to out of state folks.

Just got the call this morning!! Accepted!!!
Interviewed 9/12.
That's great, now you can join the person you know in the other class (I won't reveal who that person is to keep your identity a secret)- congrats man, I'm really happy for you, you have a great personality and the U would have been very foolish not to choose you!

Does anyone think that they will send out acceptances in December or wait for after the holidays and call in January. Just from looking at posts, it looks like the only acceptances have been september or october interview dates? Could be wrong on this. any one else know?

If I were you, I wouldn't hold my breath for a response from UUSOM until late March. That is when the vast majority of their acceptances go out. That way, if you get a call early, it will be a pleasant surprise! Otherwise, it will be a very, very, VERY long and grueling wait until their decisions come out.

Just my 2 cents

I have an interview a week from today. I'm still a little unsure of what to expect with the MMI portion of the assessment day. Is this a role play scenario , or more of a "think out loud" evaluation. Also, are they all ethical scenarios, or more oriented towards decision making?

From what they said at ours, I don't think they use the same scenarios every time. And I'm not sure what we're allowed to say anyway. We all signed an NDA.

I would expect them to continue making acceptances throughout December. Looking at last years thread, an IS applicant and an Idaho applicant were accepted on Dec. 19th. I haven't heard of any acceptances outside of that interview range, either. The acceptances seem to be much more predictable this year. So far they have been every Wednesday morning.

Yeah i have also noticed the Wed trend. I am still curious as to the interview groups. Am I wrong, but have only september and october people who have interviewed been offered acceptances?

I haven't heard of any acceptances other than those posted to this thread:

Nov. 12: IS applicant (interviewed in "October")
IS or OOS applicant? (interviewed "Last week of Sept.")
Nov. 19: IS applicant (interviewed 9/12)
Dec. 3: IS applicant (interviewed 9/19)
Dec. 10: IS applicant (interviewed 9/12)

If anyone can add to this list it will be much appreciated!

Hey, thanks for looking into this and digging through old posts. I know of two people personally who have gotten in. They may be SDNers but I am not sure. yeah looks like no OOS and no one from past October has heard...

Still nothing. I was really hoping that today was the day so I could enjoy the holidays without this on my mind 24/7!

I've been having anxiety ALL day. Since it is finals week at the U do you think they would call all the way until Friday? Or do finals end on Wednesday at the U. I'm IS but didn't attend the U of U. Good luck to everyone! This suspense is literally killing me.

For what it's worth finals ended last week at the med school.
Well thanks! I'm thinking perhaps they are being considerate to those in the midst of finals in undergrad. Who knows, I'm overanalyzing here.
