2014-2015 University of Utah Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those that are still waiting on an acceptance: the official "Class of 2019" Facebook page was opened this morning and there are only 33 students added. There may be more accepted students that haven't added the page but that gives you a rough estimate as to how full the class is. Keep your heads up! There are still plenty of calls for Dr. Chan to make in the coming weeks!!!

Rejections started going out about this time last year. I wonder if we'll see any this week...

Haha everytime I get a new email I lose like 5 years of my life from the anxiety...

Idahoan Hopeful, where in Idaho Falls are you from??

Thought I'd check in on the old SDN crew. I still haven't heard anything yet, but congrats to everyone who has. Only one month until I know my fate.

Not to make this thread into a big fortune cookie, but two quotes that I've read recently have really helped me keep my head up and enjoy my time right now while waiting for March.

"The longer you wait for the future, the shorter it will be." - Loesje

"Don't push the river, it flows by itself." -Chinese Proverb

Thought I'd share these with you all as I've found them to be helpful. Less than two months friends, we've got this!

I grew up just outside of Ucon and went to Bonneville. I am currently living in Ammon.
Excellent, IF native as well, but grew up on the West Side, went to Skyline. Glad to have another IF person at the U, there aren't many of us. Congrats on your acceptance!

Owl22, Congrats! If you don't mind, what are your stats?

Today I got a call during my anatomy class from a Utah number that I didn't recognize. Obviously my first thought is that it's the UofU and I start to freak out. It turned out to be someone from the DoD doing a background check on a former roommate...

Anyone know when the U is done with interviews? It must be coming up soon.

It is coming up.... I want to say they said it was the 23rd of Feb but not sure, it was def sometime towards the end of this month.

To any recent interviewees: Did Dr. Chan mention how many have been accepted thus far?

2/13/2015 is the last interview date
Most interesting. I know that last year they at least had them through the third week of February. February 13 is this Friday- crazy! I wonder if this means the mass phone call process will begin earlier in March (ie maybe around the 15th) or even earlier. Insights from those who may know? @ERGuy501 ? @zhopv10 ?

My friend who has already been accepted says that there are ~50 students in the facebook group for the class of 2019.

Hopefully sooner :nailbiting:

As of now, there are 55 people in the group. A couple of those are faculty, as well as current students, I would say at least 5, probably more. More than half of all acceptances still have not gone out. I wish you guys all the best, especially to my fellow interviewees @ScentOfPeace and @Ginred

FWIW: I think that there should be quite a bit of action around the first 10 days or so of March. I know that I heard with the first 10 days last year and I think a fair amount of my classmates did as well.

They maybe be ending earlier, but I wouldn't expect a really early opening of the acceptance flood gates, as there are ALOT of applications/interviews to process, and the Office really goes a good job of going through each application very thoroughly. As StLouisCards said, it might be the beginning of March as it was last year, but I would be surprised if it was any earlier

Either way, excited for you all, and good luck

From what I understand they kind of have to wait on the closing of the legislature before they can send out acceptances. The legislature ultimately decides how much funding the school will have which translates into the number of seats available. I think it's more of a formality than anything. That's why there is the wait until March.

Thanks for the heads up!

I thought that the 122 seats was already a done deal from two years ago (back when the seats were at 82 and there was an agreement to add 20 each year for the next two years.) Do the 122 seats have to be re-negotiated every single year then? Seems a bit frivolous.

Weren't there MORE interviews and applications last year? I thought they cut the number down this year to 500 from 570ish. Given that and the fact that the interview cycle is finishing up earlier this time, combined with the fact that the next full moon is March 3, and that the Jazz have a record of 19-33... Okay I've got nothing. Guess we'll see when we see!

You are correct. They are not waiting for legislature. They will be funded for 122 seats. The waiting for legislature until March was only the case in 2012.

By the way, I know 2 people who got in yesterday. Have any of you heard of any post-interview rejections going out?

First time posting to this thread! Just got the acceptance call from Dr. Chan 2 days ago!! I'm IS, 3.98 GPA, 30 MCAT, interviewed 12/22 (submitted AMCAS 06/03). Utah is definitely my TOP pick school - not only because it's an incredible program and I'm an in-state applicant from Southern Utah, but also because of the amazing atmosphere of the student body and campus that I experienced on my interview day. I cannot wait to start classes here in the Fall! I'm happy to answer any questions I can, and good luck to everyone! Oh, and there are currently 63 members in the Facebook Group.

January. Don't know specific dates.
This makes sense, it's in line with the trend we've been seeing all along. We haven't seen any retroactive acceptances yet this cycle. It seems that a few are chosen from the few weeks preceding the date of the phone call, but never back to September or October (or even November now.) I suspect that any additional acceptances that come out before the big wave in March will be ones from January and February (or late in December as was the case for @hshep22 .) I do not expect any information before that time. When the "big wave" has come and gone in March, everyone will know where they stand, whether accepted, wait listed, or rejected.

Congrats to those that were recently accepted. To those waiting hang in there! I withdrew my application, so there is at least one more seat that opened up. I hope that seat helps someone reach their dream of becoming a doctor.

What?!? You would turn down Utah for the David Geffen scholarship?

Yeah I think you are right. I think that overt the next few weeks the admission committee will look at people who interviewed in late Jan through today, then they will begin looking at us September interviewees again.

Thanks for letting us know. Good luck to you.

the world needs more people like you!

Haha, that's a little much but thanks! I normally would just withdraw and not post anything on here. However, I have several friends that are anxiously waiting to hear back. I hope that my post serves as a reminder that it's not over until it's over (very cliche but true). There is still a lot movement left (both in March and the following waitlist movement). I wish everyone luck. This is a great school with awesome faculty, students, and price-tag...and very few places, if any, beat Utah out for quality of life IMO. I hope many on here will hear good news. I'm excited for the next few weeks!

After revisiting last year's thread, it seems that the end of March was when people found out about being wait listed/rejected rather than a huge amount of acceptances. As @StLouisCards mentioned, and according to what I gathered from last year's thread, I think a lot of acceptances will come out early March. I therefore rescind my previous March 15 comment.

But they did also send out rejections in early March, as I received my rejection March 7.

Correct. It's just that I'd previously been thinking that a large number of acceptances would roll out at the end of March, but doing some digging around on last year's thread reminded me that the majority of the final acceptances actually went out in the first two weeks of March and the big message on March 24 last year was mostly for rejections and waitlistees

Oh, okay. Thanks for looking into that!

Anyone hear anything today? Also, has anyone heard of any post-interview rejections yet?
