2014-2015 University of Utah Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Haha, good luck @Ginred! The whole penguin thing started in the Duke thread, but it for sure didn't work out for me there! But penguins are cool anyway, and the U seems to like them!
Ah yes, I recall you mentioning the penguins origin on interview day. That's actually when I first started noticing them on SDN

Seems to work for most people! Hopefully it does for you, I'm really pullin for ya! What if I change mine to a penguin in your honor??
Thanks @hirschman , I really appreciate that! Sure, we can increase the power of the penguins, I'll take the support!

Hi guys/gals!
I was just wondering if anyone knew the post-interview chances of an acceptance for an OOS (non-Idaho) applicant at the University of Utah? Dr. Chan mentioned that 50-60 OOS are interviewed for 14 spots and I'm curious about my situation if I am put on the alternate list in March? I really love Utah and would love the opportunity to attend this program. It just seems like there would be a high turnover rate for OOS spots with the tuition being SO high...but poking around on threads from previous years didn't really answer my question. Thanks and good luck, everyone!

That's because this this the first year (atleast in a while) with spots for non-ID OOS...

No one can tell you that. It is about the same ratio of accepted to interviewed for OOS and IS though. Around 1:5.

If you get on the waitlist I wouldn't really expect to get in. Most people who apply here want to go here it seems. Don't worry about that yet though. There are still a decent amount of seats left for us .

I don't think this is true. They have been accepting ~10 non-ID OOSers for a while now. What is relatively new is people who went to high school or college in UT are now considered IS.

Thank you for the reply! I guess I'll just continue crossing my fingers for some good news come March!

What do you guys/gals think the chances of getting accepted for an applicant who got an MCAT of 28 and a GPA of 3.7 IS. My EC are ave or above.

You honestly never know, this is especially true here I think. There are people who have gotten in with higher and lower scores than that. Good news is, it's almost March!

Looking at last years match list, did a bunch of people not match? There are 6 transitional year and 12 medicine-preliminary.
(source: http://medicine.utah.edu/alumni/students_residents/Match results by specialty 2014.pdf )

compared with 2013 where only 1 medicine-preliminary and 3 transitional year.
http://medicine.utah.edu/admissions/statistics/match2013-information-specialityandstateupdated.pdf

I know that many specialties require the first year as a preliminary year in either medicine or surgery, but most match lists I've read have where they matched along with sometimes their prelim year...

I can't speak to the others on the list, but I know a couple of the transitional year/prelim medicine students and they matched into very competitive programs that require these years. Also, while I think your question is totally valid I would like to offer my perspective on Match list and along the same line, board score data since that is what students (myself included last year) look at. While match lists have their value, also keep in mind that this match is showing results from curriculum that is 4 yrs old. There is a program (among others) that has been instituted just barely with our class for example that I think is fantastic and will help quite a bit if take advantage of. Also keep in mind that matching, like board scores, is largely the product of the students own personal work ethic. Sure the institution can help by offering plenty of resources, but if it is weighing on anyone's mind I can assure you that the U has an abundance of opportunities in just about anything you are looking to do 🙂

Interesting to compare it with this 2014 match list, of the UofU website. The numbers for preliminary medicine are much lower. This list also shows that of all those that matched that year, only 3 "SOAP-ed", meaning they didn't match the first time. I feel that's a pretty good percentage.

A friend told me that one of his classmates just got accepted this morning.
IS , Interviewed in Jan.

I was accepted earlier this week. I've been quite a regular viewer of this website, but never created an account or posted. I have more or less average GPA, MCAT for this school. IS applicant. Interviewed late January. I think it was my interviews and ECs that made the difference for me (based off the phone call).

As for the Facebook group, there are 80 people in that group as of this moment. There's a lot of seats up for grabs- hang in there!

The class has to be full (edit: 122 offers sent) by March 15 so that means two weeks left....
Where are you getting that information? I thought it was by the end of March/beginning of April.

see #4

(Change) By March 15 of the matriculation year, each school or program have issued a number of offers of acceptance at least equal to the expected number of students in its first-year entering class and have reported those acceptance actions to the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS).

They have to send out 122 offers, although some will and have already declined so there may be a few more spaces left after march 15 depending on how they do things...

Edit: I believe they have given the march 15 deadline this year as the May 15 deadline last year was moved up to April 30

Interesting. Thank you!

It's March! Cue the jitters in 3... 2... 1...
Are we thinking that calls are going to go out on Monday, or that the rule book has been thrown out the window now and calls are going to come fast and furious? If things hold true to form as last year there will be a good number of acceptances both this week and next week.

Seems he's been steady calling on Wed/Thurs the entire cycle... but with the acceptance deadline coming up who knows what will happen! I'd be fine with an 8 am wakeup call tomorrow 😉

My prediction is that this Wednesday will be the normal call day for the remaining interview days. Then starting Thursday we'll hear about the mass calls from all of the interview days (hopefully we'll each hear about the mass calls because we receive one...!).

Does anybody know what the typical daily/weekly schedule looks like for first year medical students?

First year is usually 1 to 5 pm and second year is 8 am to noon. I think Wednesdays it goes all day. There is a sample schedule online.

Thank you for this information. I remembered the schedule was similar but I couldn't remember if classes were in the morning or afternoon during first year.

Yes, this seems pretty plausible, I'm going with this as well. So on Thursday I'll start checking SDN with elevated neuroticism

Thanks.. no hope for me then.. I was interviewed before that.
I don't think that's accurate...at all. The admissions committee scores you, then you are ranked with all other applicants. He's likely just going down the list according to rank. I don't think that when you interviewed matters anymore. (Besides those that just barely interviewed and are waiting to hear)

I see.. thanks!
let's wait and see if someone else got a call!

Just got a call from Dr. Chan! He's so nice ^_^ makes me want to go to the U just because of how they've treated me as an applicant thus far. I interviewed in mid January with slightly above average GPA and average MCAT. Dr. Chan definitely stressed how well I did in my interviews and committee evaluations so I agree with other posts that say interviews determine a lot. I'm wavering between Utah and Carver in Iowa right now. Both have great programs and very nice faculty....x.x

Best of luck to everyone!

Congrats! Are you IS or OOS?
