2014-2015 University of Vermont Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
wow lots of acceptances. Congrats. I interviewed 10/18 as well, my portal still says my file will be reviewed in the coming weeks.

I just checked and got a II, no email strangely enough
Anyone else couldn't find the "scheduling interview" link to the left of the page? Not sure if it just hasn't updated

Can you tell me where you see "preliminary review" on the online applicant portal?

When I log in there is no information on status..
It's the very first thing you see when you login. There's something different for everybody but mine says I'm being preliminarily reviewed.

II today! Complete 9/15 and Small-pooled about four weeks ago. Can't to wait to interview here!

II yesterday...withdrew my application today. Good luck everyone!

I interviewed on 11/1 and they said we wouldn't hear back until JANUARY...really frustrating considering I have only until December 15th to put a 2k deposit down (non-refundable) on another school to keep my foot in the door.

Since there is practically no information on this forum about the actual school and plenty of non-informative rambling about secondary applications/waitlisting I guess I'll contribute and share my interview experience:

The area -
First off the city of Burlington is absolutely stunning. I interviewed in the Fall and the landscape is absolutely mesmerizing; all of the trees were brilliant shades of red, yellow, and green - something I don't have living in Phoenix, which makes me miss having actual seasons. The architecture in the University campus is also something to marvel at, considering each building has a cool looking brick-castle appearance. Burlington is pretty much a college town and is a melting pot of different cultures (although outside Burlington is predominately white). On Church street, a pedestrian-only avenue that is pretty much adjacent to campus, there are a variety of local bars and restaurants and live street performances. There is also a farmers market that takes place at the UVM campus each week. Overall, there is no shortage of things to do in your free time while attending school here, especially if you're an outdoorsman, considering there are plenty of hiking trails and ski resorts surrounding the area.

Interview day -
The Dean of UVM seems confident that his school will give every student the best medical education there is, considering "other schools have been copying our curriculum for years". Each new student gets to meet their first patient on day ONE which is a cool intro to life in medicine in my opinion. The best part of the campus is that the Fletcher Allen Hospital is literally connected to the school, and is the location of each student's rotations. Although it's not the most 'futuristic' looking campus, there are plenty of nice facilities which are adequate for med-school success. Each student also receives a tablet and a new laptop (a student ambassador told me they are really nice, $3k ones), and if you happen to break either, you can go to the tech-center and they give you a brand new one. The school uses the MMI format for interviews and also has a teamwork simulation exercise (pretty fun) for grading, which is all I can really tell you.

Overall I really enjoyed UVM and the surrounding area. The presentation of the school and the actual academics were slightly below average in my opinion, but it didn't take away from the experience.

I would assume that it's because of the holidays. At least some of the 10/18ers, myself included, got news in less than two weeks (10/30).

That deposit is no joke... I'm sorry if you have to lay that much cash down before you hear back elsewhere, but I hope you get some good news before then.

Also, thank you guys for the kind responses! I hope end up getting in here. It'd be much easier to stomach if Burlington and the school weren't so amazing.

yeah not being able to hear until december or january is a real bummer. although considering several people here have heard back within a couple of weeks, it's possible they just said that as a worst-case so they wouldn't get so many phone calls or emails

No. Not everyone gets small pooled.

I didn't mean to imply everyone gets small pooled. he asked if not immediately granted an interview would it say that the original status. sorry for the confusion

I've been at preliminary review for 8 weeks and it says 4-6, so hopefully I'll hear some (good) news soon! One the bright side I'm at almost 14 weeks of review for another school that said 4-6, so 8 here doesn't seem so bad.

This! I'm wondering if staying at prelim review this long is bad...

Small pooled after less than a week of prelim. review, though it had taken 3 months for my app to enter prelim. review. Progress through the backlog that was mentioned a few pages ago must be happening. I'll take slow and steady if it ends with an acceptance. 🙂

That happened to me to! I hope it's a good sign!

Has anyone gotten an II out of the small pool?

A counter example...I was small pooled back in August and haven't gotten an ii.

small pool is definitely not a bad thing -- i was "small pooled" and got an II shortly thereafter. "small" is definitely not the best term though because it seems that a large majority of people get this status

can people get II without being small pooled?

Not unless they want to invite you to interview at the precise time they small pool you. Happened to me for MCW but I haven't seen it happen here.

Any fellow SDNers going to the December 11 interview?

Does anyone know whether UVM likes letters of intent/interest?? thanks!

I know there have been a few acceptances already, has anyone received rejections/ waitlist post-interview?

Small pooled. I submitted way back in Mid-August. Hoping to get an interview. Loved Vermont when I applied last year.

Twelve weeks tomorrow and still the intial status in my portal... I suppose thats not a rejection yet but i'm starting to suspect it will be indicative of bad things to come...

Samesies, I'm assuming if we aren't small pooled then we are rejected

Interviewed 10/18, rejected today. Ah, well. Anyone else in the same boat?

Interviewed 10/18, waitlisted today. 3.7/32. Fingers crossed!!
