2014-2015 University of Virginia Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does admissions email you a confirmation email or something to let you know that they received your signed admission offer?

Hey UVa is also my top choice too. Are you IS? Looks like they are reviewing IS people more frequently now. So maybe we will here soon? Ah what do they say when you call?
Do you know if that means they're finishing up OOS interviews? I have yet to hear back as well, and I'm really hoping to hear from them but I'm OOS.

Hey, this question is for current students. When can we start filling out the application for financial aid? not the FAFSA, but the other one and also when do students typically find out about aid.
I also saw that the average debt for student is around 130K with very few going above 200K. Since UVA only gives max 20 K for instate and 24K for out of state with COA in the 70-80K a year, how is the average not higher? I am assuming everyone who goes to UVA does not have a trust fund for med school? Can anyone clarify this?

Any OOS interviews rolling out? Waiting as patiently as I can for that email!!

Oh sorry I have no idea, just speculating based on the last few II's being posted here for ISers. I doubt they are done with OOS.

You usually have to wait for your parents to file their taxes to submit your UVA financial aid application (since they will be requesting this info anyway). UVA will send accepted students an email with info to create an account to access SIS (where the financial aid app is) in January I believe. Usually students have at least some parental support (such as helping with housing costs, etc) + UVA scholarship/subsidized loan, which results in that avg debt. Btw, COA is an artificially high number to maximize the potential aid that students can get. Realistically if tuition is $57k OOS + you receive $24k scholarship = $33k per year + housing ($1k-1200 a month is more than enough to cover basic expenses and housing in cville..if you have a roommate). If you have help with housing, you would have ~$132k of debt.

I have over 200K of debt, but this included interest accrued during med school. My actual loans come out to something like $177K. I took out roughly $45K per year in loans... $10K of which was a subsidized school loan at 5% interest. I had plenty of wiggle room to travel to see family and the occasional celebratory vacation, as well as an elective to Costa Rica during fourth year. It came a little tight during fourth year (the amount of federal loans you are eligible for goes down fourth year because the year is only 9 months long, but residency applications can get expensive) and I actually got an additional scholarship during fourth year because of it.

My mom doesn't make much, so I got the full aid because of that, but I didn't have any real parental assistance. A number of my classmates had jobs prior to med school that allowed them to save up enough for housing and whatnot (one of my classmates bought a condo and is now renting it out during residency). Others have significant others not in school, which helps out with the COL expenses as well (I can think of at least 10 people off the top of my head in this situation). Some people were extremely frugal, and managed to decrease some costs that way (my monthly budget was about $1200, some people managed to cut their expenses down to half that). And, of course, some people have parental support (via purchasing a condo/townhome and renting out extra rooms for additional expenses, etc). Some people use other means to pay for school (we had 7 or so people do HPSP).

Been complete since 8/12, OOS. Anyone with a similar wait?
Seems like the name of the game is WAIT around here. There are plenty of waiters, just like you and me. Grab a Mai Tai and get comfortable! (but not so comfortable you put awkward photos on facebook or can't speak if they call you...)

ACCEPTED TODAY! Wow, I cannot believe it. I thought the first of my two interviews didn't go very well. Glad to see that didn't crush my chances.
Having them post responses every Friday is really awesome. I interviewed on Wednesday and only had 2 days to mull over what I did/didn't do. It is very humane of them! Good luck to everyone else waiting to interview or hear back. Charlottesville seemed like a really fun city and the current med students and faculty were awesome on the interview day.

So UVA is my number one school, but I have yet to hear anything back from them at this time. I've called a few times during the application season checking on my status to show interest as I heard that sometimes this helps. I know that there's still plenty of time to hear back, but I still can't help being nervous. Does anyone have any advice as far as calling in to check on my application? I don't want to do it too much, but at the same time I really want to show just how much I want to go to UVA.

Current UVA M1 here

I was an IS applicant, attending an above-average in-state university (not UVA), w/ a GPA of 3.9+ and MCAT 32-34, when I applied last year. My application was complete in mid July and I never heard from the Adcom until late December. My interview was scheduled for late January and I was accepted the Friday of that week.

From what I've noticed, the adcom seemed to have a pattern to how they selected applicants for interview. My particular interview day happened to have a majority of IS applicants, other days had more OOS, and some days had a good focus on UVA grads. I know these patterns now because they release interview calendars and basic info (hometown, undergrad, M/F) to us current students for the purposes of student hosting. Maybe this grouping had to do with deciding which interviewers to assign to each day/week?

No one should lose hope just because they haven't heard anything so far. Some very well qualified students in my class were not interviewed until very late in the cycle. UVA also has a quick turn around time for interview scheduling and decisions.

In regards to your actual question, simply emailing the adcom wouldn't be a bad idea. You could maybe ask them to verify that all parts of your application have arrived successfully (in-state form perhaps?--I emailed about this).

Let me know if you guys have any other questions

Really hoped I wouldn't be in this situation but here it is: Due to an extremely horrible exam, I am shooting straight for a C/C+ in a Biochem class this semester. I know UVA said they would want an explanation. Any current students know what kind of explanation/format they are looking for ("I didn't study hard enough")? They won't rescind my offer because of a C, right? Other classes this semester will be A's perhaps one B.
Thanks!

I don't think so. They say that they will reconsider your application if you have a D, which makes it seems that you would probably be okay if you have a good explanation for a C.

this was reassuring to hear... is there anyway you can ballpark the number of instate people that have gotten interview invitations at this point out of the 150 they give to in-staters? i'm wondering if i'm working with like 75/150 already given or 125/150 already given...

I'm in the same situation. 🙁 I'm thinking about using interviews/missing school as an excuse, which is actually a big reason for my grade in this class, anyway.

Are we thinking that everyone is (rightfully) celebrating the holidays now? Guess on more movement is first week of Jan right?

I'm looking to send UVA a pre-II update letter. Can I confirm that I send it to [email protected]? Or is there a different email address?

Where are people getting their BLS certification done? Are you you guys going to do it online and then attend a part II skills session?
I did mine at a local hospital satellite office. It only took up a weekend morning.

Dang that's pretty quick for both the classroom & testing sections, or did you do the classroom part (part I) online? Also - did you do the BLS for Healthcare Providers for prehealthcare providers? I assume it's the former but I'm not 100% sure.
I did everything in person. I took the BLS for Healthcare providers course. The course took less than 4 hours total.

Sweet, thanks! I thought it'd be like a week-2 week ordeal. Thanks for your help.

I'm a BLS instructor so I teach HCP CPR classes on a semi regular basis. Can confirm that, if taught well, the class takes about 4 hours max.

It also means I already have a certification b/c I can participate in any of the classes I teach 🙂

For any accepted applicants, do you know if we should have received any info regarding background checks, since it's the new year now?
I didn't get any info about the background check yet. And the BLS certification just has to be done sometime before matriculation right?

There's a deadline for the BLS certification somewhere in the required stuff for acceptance packet we got

*edit* I don't remember when it is, but it's in June or July or some summer month

I'm interviewing next Monday and haven't heard back about getting a student host yet. I e-mailed them again but on the off chance that they don't have a host available, are there any current students here who wouldn't mind letting me stay over on Sunday night?

I'm a current undergrad. I know it's less than perfect but if you don't have any other options I have a futon available.

Thanks for the offer! I'll let you know if I need to take you up on it 🙂

Wait. Are all accepted students required to get BLS certifcation?

Where did you find that? I don't remember seeing it in the admission packet.

Does anyone know if UVA has merit aid to give ?

Those who are accepted? Does anyone know how second-look works here? Not sure if we are supposed to be receiving information soon. I wonder if the school will pay for travel or whether we would be responsible for ourselves - if latter is the case I think I would rather book flights earlier rather than later.

Pretty sure most schools don't pay for travel to second look, but they pay for lodging and such when you arrive.

For waitlist updates, are we supposed to send emails to [email protected]?
And do they update the "communication status" tab on the secondary to confirm they've received your update?

I got the background check email yesterday, although it could've been from my other waitlists or acceptance. Anyway, I'm pretty sure I'll be matriculating here next year as an out-of-state student. Loved the school on interview day and am looking forward to coming here.

Have any other accepted applicants not gotten it yet?
