Has anyone received a packet yet with more information? I thought they would be sending a bigger packet to all the accepted soon...

I believe the original acceptance document stated that more instructions would come in May.

EDIT: not sure what that means in terms of financial aid packages

Just wondering if airfare, food and hotel for 2nd visit are ALL covered by UW SMPH?

Is there anything us wait listers can do to improve our chances?
Your final opportunity to submit any updates is during your interview sessions. Afterwards, it all comes down to what your numerical ranking is - Good luck!

In addition to april221's comment, any idea when we get financial aid packages?
Unless you have received a scholarship offer, the financial aid package will be sub+unsub loans covering your CoA since UW doesn't offer need-based financial aid (e.g. pell grant etc) until your 2nd year. Can't speak to the exact date for the larger info packages, but I remember I got mine a couple weeks before 2nd look, but definitely before the decision deadline (if you have already been accepted).

UW doesn't cover expenses for 2nd look, but I think that's a general policy for most schools. There are schools that have the special extended second look program for students who are invited to it (you will be contacted if you are invited), which does provide coverage (UW included), but there is no way schools have funding to invite all 250+ accepted applicants back for free, when only 176 will be matriculating. Low yield investments

Are there no more scholarships going out most likely?

Thanks Jenny! Your quote on the bottom always makes me laugh.

Correct, Dean Hansen told the admissions volunteers Monday that there likely won't be any more scholarship offers this year. Sorry all 🙁

So does that mean if we have not been awarded any scholarships, we won't receive it? Or that scholarships are assigned and the person receiving it will know when they get their financial aid package?
(I'm assuming it's the former, but hoping for the latter)

Oh thats a bummer about scholarships! I loved Madison but I got another scholarship offer I'm not sure I could ever turn down! :/🙁

Seems like a lot fewer went out than previous years. Related to the current Wisconsin political climate perhaps?

I should have been more clear, it is probably more close to the latter! So actually scholarship awards are sent to you separately than your financial aid, and all awards have been assigned, but some people may have yet to get those letters/calls, so I guess technically not too soon to lose hope!

See my comment above, in response to Rollerbladdin

There indeed was less scholarship money to give out this year, though I don't know that it was "a lot" less, I think it just fluctuates a bit from year to year based on the rate of alumni/private donor contributions... I can't imagine how the scholarship pool would be effected by the political climate, but maybe I am not sure what you are suggesting with that comment?

Speculating that belts might be tightening a bit with Gov. Walker's budget cuts?

As Kittykattat noted, scholarships are funded through the generous donations of alumni, other folks, etc (just like our stethoscopes and white coats). From my understanding of what Dean Hansen mentioned, they are independent of any changes that might happen at the state level regarding politics and speculated budget cuts. This might also explain why Becky has stated that financial aid packages and scholarship offers are considered two separate things at UWSMPH.

In addition to this, correct me if I am mistaken, but I believe there is a tuition freeze for the next two years. So tuition has the potential to go up for our last two years. I remember hearing that from someone but can't remember from where.

^This is true! Till 2017.

I just found out I'm #6 on the wait list. What do you think my chances are?

Does anyone know how far down UWSMPH has gone on the wait list in previous years?

I am in state, and I found out via a letter today. In the letter it said they have accepted anywhere from 0 to 30 off the wait list depending on the year, so I was just wondering if you guys had a better idea of what the actual chances were.

You asked this same question a while back, so I'll give you the same answer that anyone else will give you now (see below)

Anyone know what the wait list situation is like for in state? I'm new to this forum and just got wait listed earlier today. No idea where I stand on the wait list. I applied in October, secondary in November, interviewed December.
They'll release the rank list some time around late March/April. Last year, about a dozen(ish) folks were pulled off the in-state waitlist, and none from the OOS to my knowledge (or 1-2 at most). If you end up getting ranked 1-10, your chances of getting accepted are still "pretty good", but any higher than that is left to the fate of where the other students end up matriculating.

giannis3434: nobody knows how a waitlist moves...it comes down to INDIVIDUAL ppl making INDIVIDUAL choices (does brad go to UWSMPH or MCW? Does Stephanie choose the full ride at WashU or stay in UWSMPH)

btw: suppose a accepted person drops a scholarship (he/she does not attend the school and goes elsewhere)...does that scholarship go to someone on the waitlist?

I would assume that scholarship would go to the vast majority of already accepted students who haven't received a scholarship

Most med schools offer more scholarships than they can actually afford, knowing that they won't retain all of the highly sought after applicants they accepted, as most have several good scholarship offers. So the first few rejected scholarships wouldn't go to anyone. But if there are an unusual number of people that receive a scholarship but don't attend that year, like @:)) said, they will go to the most qualified students out of those who have already been accepted at the time of the scholarship committee meeting.

Most people at UW Madison do not receive a scholarship at all, as the tuition is already among the very cheapest in the country.

Jennyfishy sorry bout that, didn't check back to see your old responses. I really didn't ask the same exact question just to clarify: before I asked about the wait list situation, like how many are on it, how much it might move, when you find out more info, etc. recently, I asked what the chances are for someone ranked 6th. So slightly different questions. I understand how they could be easily confused to be the same though, and you answered both questions in your first response anyway, so thank you for that. My bad for not looking at former replies.

Got my wait list letter today(non-resident) and let's just say my rank is impossible especially when the letter mentions that zero non-residents have been accepted off the alternate list in the past four years. I always knew my chances were extremely small as a non-resident so its not a surprise.

UWSMPH seems like a great school and the students I talked to at the social (@Jennyfishy ) were extremely friendly. Best of luck to all accepted students and those on the wait list!

Same here. Would be extremely disappointed if I hadnt already accepted the WL status from them as a rejection...

Sorry to hear about the waitlists. I have a question for current students- @kittykattat , @Jennyfishy -perhaps you can help. About how many weeks do most non-WARM students spend away from Madison during their third year rotations? Does it vary a lot depending on students' preferences? What about for students in TRIUMPH? Do TRIUMPH students do non-Madison rotations in rural areas in addition to their rotations in Milwaukee?

From what I've heard its usually two rotations so about 12 weeks (two 6 weeks or an 8 week and a 4 week) for non WARM non TRIUMPH students. However if you have a good reason not to leave the area (small children, a sick parent or SO, etc) the school will let you do all of your rotations in Madison.

I don't know much about TRIMPH so you might want to look on their website or call the school for more info, but the way I understand it all 3rd year rotations are in Milwaukee (so no, you don't have to do anything rural) and then fourth year you can do a few rotations wherever you want (Madison, rural WI, east coast, west coast, international, wherever) in preparation for residency

Anyone coming to the extended 2nd visit? I was wondering if it's for everybody or just a few people. And do you guys know what will be the activities for these few days? Thank you!

You'll get your official itinerary when you all arrive, but only a small group of the currently accepted pool are invited to attend by the office of multicultural affairs.

Enjoy it! I met my closest classmates/friends and potential housemates as well as a handful of M2s who I am still pretty close with during that week 😀

Anyone get financial aid packages yet? Also, did anyone receive a scholarship notification after the facebook update last month? Thanks!

I emailed the financial aid office. They said they plan on sending packages this week.

Email I was sent: "We are hoping to send the first awards within the week!"

Buuump... any takers?

You'll see me there. I'll be the strikingly handsome but mysterious loner who everyone wants to meet but no one has the courage to talk to because his face, which is always cast in shadow, bears the brooding expression of a man who spent 8 years in an Iranian prison secretly mastering the ancient Persian combat art known as Razmafzar until one frigid night in January he made his bloody escape and disappeared into the Arab underworld where he began earning a living as a swabbie on a Somalian pirate ship until at last he could no longer condone the atrocities of his shipmates and single-handedly mutinied, commandeering their vessel to sail around the horn of Africa, eventually landing in North America where the alluring promise of the simple life of an American medical student propelled his journey to the idyllic physiography of south-central Wisconsin.

Tl;dr: My personal statement kicked total ass.

I'm not too sure. Your guess is as good as mine. I would hope that it would include scholarship information

As previously stated on this page, scholarship awards are sent out separately from financial aid packages. However I suppose it's possible that once in a while one might log into the fin aid portal to see a loan amount less a scholarship that had been entered in the system at the fin aid office but who's notification letter has not yet reached you.

Has anyone received their financial aid package yet? I'm gnashing my teeth as April 30 looms.:help:

I don't think anyone has yet. According to Becky's post in the FB group it could be another week or two...I talked to Becky at second look, too, and she said people might be finding out into May. Not sure how people who are waiting on financials to make their decision are supposed to decide. Unfortunately the fin aid packages are run through the same office that processes packages for undergrads and all the other professional schools, so they don't have any particular deadlines in mind. I also heard they do the med school last. Maybe if you called and stressed the timeliness they could expedite it? Who knows.
