2014-2015 Virginia Commonwealth University Application Thread

Got the #4 status today (We have some reservations about granting an interview...will be reviewed by subcommittee). Bummed, but we'll see what happens down the road.

It still sounds hopeful! But on the more serious note…are they really reviewing on the weekend or are these just automated messages designated to ruin peoples weekends???

Rejected today 🙁 3.9 GPA, 33 MCAT, OOS, very strong EC, I am still in shock and wonder why not even an II?! 🙁

I am so sorry, this is making me very nervous, My stats don't even touch yours!

Sorry! Maybe VCU likes people from the region? Are you close? Via status update?

No, I am from IL, so pretty far, but I didn't know that VCU places that much importance on locations! I got an email saying that my status has changed and when I logged in, I saw the rejection notice 🙁 first rejection of the cycle really stings... sigh...

Also from the Midwest. Hoping for the best for you!

VCU loves great ECs. They can really make up for a lower MCAT or GPA at this school. They are also looking for "good fits."

They have a little IS preference, but definitely are OOS friendly. They end up taking 100 IS & 100 OOS each year and then 10 MD/PhD people. But with OOS they have no geographical or regional preference or anything.

With those stats I'm sure you'll have better luck elsewhere! 🙂

Don't let it get you down cuz everybody gets at least one rejection. It may have just been that there was something that made them feel you weren't a good fit for the school. You can always call and ask. Keep your head up though!

Just got a status update. Complete 7/10. Had this status for a long time, as I'm sure many of you also do:

Your M.D. file is now complete. The Admissions Committee will now do a comprehensive review of your application. Once the review is complete, your file will be prioritized, and interviews will be granted based on your priority score and the date your file was completed.

But today my status changed to this:

Your file is complete, and has been forwarded to the Admissions Committee for further decison.

What does this mean? Did anyone else get this status update? Does this mean I'm going to get one of the hinting interview status updates or rejection soon? Or does this not mean anything and some of you have been on this status for a while?

It seems to be the concensus that the site switches between these 2 updates for some reason, but they essentially mean the same thing. That's the gist of what I've been getting from everyone's posts.

I hope so my friend, thanks for the positive feedback. I wish you and everyone the best of luck, may we all get accepted to our favorite school 🙂

You and I are stat-twins! Sorry to hear about your rejection 🙁 But I'm sure you will do great at other schools!

I am in shock too! If they rejected someone with your credentials, how is there hope for the rest of us?

Anyone else getting status update emails and not have their status updated? It happened twice to me now.

Trust me, VCU likes fit a lot. They take lower stat applicants over higher all the time.
Well sh**, guess I'm out of the running now. OOS with cGPA/sGPA/MCAT of 3.73/3.78/36, WUSTL alum 2014, no research but lots of community service, currently working as ER scribe and hospice care volunteer. I've been at "App is complete and has been forward to committee for review" for weeks now.

Sitting at that same status, too. -___- They were so quick on the upstart, but I'm beginning to think my app is on an indefinite hold.

It can be kind of hard to gauge "fit" from the primary – especially in my case, since my ECs don't have a consistent slant and my PS was not directed towards a specific medical path. The secondary was based on a hypothetical scenario, so not much "fit" to derive from there either. 😢 In hindsight I suppose I should have been more of a salesperson with my app.

Any school that would refuse to give you an II is run by idiots.

No doubt they will get an acceptance - and likely multiple acceptances! Those really are impressive stats and good ECs. But schools reject higher stat applicants all the time to "protect the yield" ... If an applicant is OOS and has great stats, they are more likely to stay in state because it's cheaper or they'll go to a top 20 school. So schools that are state schools & not top tier will pass them over since the chances of them accepting an offer wouldn't be that high. They would rather give an interview slot to someone who is more likely to attend

I still have the same status as well with similar stats and complete before 7/10, but I don't think its time to adopt such a negative outlook just yet. I applied last year with lower stats (although not to VCU) and learned that the application process can be a long one, and most of the time there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to the timing when updates occur. Keeping a positive outlook until I have reason to think otherwise.

Why do you guys think that means out of the running? I was under the impression everyone eventually gets a 1-5 status update...

Yeah, VCU's secondary wasn't so great in terms of gauging fit or letting us show how we fit with them. And trust me, I'm not good at "selling myself" at all lol.

Any school that would refuse to give you an II is run by idiots.
LOL thanks for having more faith in me than I do myself. I keep kicking myself for more EC's, including research, during undergrad. I was reluctant to break out of my shell completely (I'm an introvert), unlike all those extraverted go-getter "I love doing a million activities at the cost of my sleep, health, and grades!" WashU kids.

Your logic makes complete sense, which is why I dislike it lol. I only chose OOS schools that I would actually attend if I didin't get accepted anywhere else. It's always a big risk to apply to VCU as OOS (or anywhere else for that matter). It's too bad that candidates can't just apply to their state schools and be fine with that.

I know, I shouldn't become negative either. I think I had that initial shock like everyone else did when we all read that post.

I still haven't gotten 1-5, and it's been like 3 weeks now. I'm starting to think they really didn't like my answer for their required essay lol.

How long after submitting did it take for you guys to get a status update? I haven't heard from them at all after submitting late last week (like thursday i think).

Read some of the thread and you'll get a good idea of how long some people have been waiting. For example, I was complete on 7/10 and have had silence.

Are you talking complete status or priority status? I submitted on Saturday and received complete status today.

It varies, some people got status updates quicker than others who submitted earlier.

Don't worry! You are definitely gonna get acceptances unless you have a big red flag or something! Haha. And VCU (as well as all the Virginia schools) is more friendly to OOS than a lot of other states!

Wow..........what are they (VCU) looking for?

Weird, my letters were submitted last Thursday and I still have not been marked as complete...

has anyone else noticed a pattern of IS--> further status--> II? maybe its just me because I got the further status yesterday and I'm IS.

Very sad, hope I "fit" well. 40 mcat here with advanced degree, etc. Would be nice to have in state tuition. I finished the secondary a bit ago with no change...

do they email you when there is a status change?

yes you get some generic email saying that it changed and then you have to log in and see what the actual status is

I really hope this is true! I am IS and got a 'Further' status two nights ago (Sunday night). I was complete 7/21. Have you seen many IS'ers get II after the further?

ya seems to be a pretty consistent trend that i'm noticing here and from last year and the year before last year's threads (really bored at work yesterday) but only for IS and I only looked at July/August timeframe. looks like IS people get II in 3 days- 1 week after further. let me know if you hear because I got further Monday!
