2014-2015 Virginia Commonwealth University Application Thread

Could you kindly post your stats <3

Sure, although, I'm a very non-traditional student. IS; GPA 3.25 sGPA 3.28; nsGPA: 3.22, 30 MCAT but I have a masters degree in health policy- GPA: 3.8, and I've been doing health policy work in DC since 2012

Has anyone who has interviewed still not received the post-interview hold?

For those that interviewed in the afternoon - what time did you have to arrive? Was there a tour, etc beforehand? I'm curious as to whether I could drive down from DC in the morning, or if I should think about spending the night before in Richmond. Thanks!

If you have an afternoon interview, you don't have to get there until 11 and there's nothing planned for you until then. However, because the traffic around DC can be unpredictable (I'm not super familiar with the area so correct me if I'm wrong), you may not want to try getting there the morning of.

So, I completed and submitted the secondary sometime in late July, recieved my new MCAT score on August 12th and my status was listed as "complete" and do not contact admissions. However, just a few moments ago my status changed to complete and being forwarded to the committee for further decision. My question, although I'm sure it's been asked too many time to count-- how long after my current status should I expect one of these "may" statuses or one of the others they seem to offer? Again, I apologize for asking such a repetitive question, but I don't feel like reading 33 pages of a forum; I just don't have the time.

Sounds like you got the "further" status. Just hold tight and hope for an II.

Just a question for those of you who have interviewed...do they send you a rejection notice 10 days after you are reviewed in committee if you are given a score of a 4 or a 5?

Correct. According to the info session we received interview day, anybody who scores above a certain threshold (3.5 or higher I think?) will receive a rejection notice approximately 10 days after.

As for people getting nervous about post-interview hold status...relax! There are folks who interviewed only one week prior to the first round of acceptances going out that got an acceptance. Once the committee meets the following week to discuss your file, as long as you make it past the ~10 day rejection window, you have a final score and will be considered during the next round of acceptances.

This might not be available information, but do you (or anyone else) know approximately what percentage of interviewees are outright rejected like this?

I have been complete since about August 20th with only silence. Then again, I have had silence from all of the MD programs that I am highly interested in...... CO resident, 3.62cumulative undergrad, 3.82BCMP, 28MCAT, 3.16PharmD gpa (hoping to get a chance to explain that GPA drop in an interview).

I am still at your file is ready.... It says possible reasons for hold on the bottom... Does this mean I have a hold?

Odd...I got an email from VCU about a status update, and I was excited that maybe it was an II, but all it said was that my file was now being reviewed by the committee. Secondary submitted 8/8, but apparently my file was only "complete" yesterday (11/5).

I received the same thing yesterday and then my status was switched back to my original today. I'm just going to go with the flow and not worry about it until I get an II or rejection.

Further status today. Come on VCU would love an II, you are beyond any doubt my number one choice.

Complete 9/12. No change. I must have a low "priority score."
Stay positive my man! There's no way to be certain that you have a low priority score if they haven't actually prioritized your application!

It gets really frustrating to see people on here that were complete in September/October and already have status updates and interviews. Especially when they have similar stats to mine. I keep trying to figure out how the admissions committee goes about reviewing applications. It doesn't seem to make since. Perhaps its done by region? I know some medical schools send out secondaries based on what region the applicant lives in. If so, IS would obviously be first, but perhaps those of us that have been complete since July/August simply live in a region that they review later on?
Just a guess. I can't figure out any other rationale behind it all.

Well, I'm from Canada so let's test this region theory haha

for everyone that has interviewed, how long after the interview did you get the survey? thanks

Yesterday I finally got a status change after being complete waaay back in julyish. This is what it said, "The committee's file review indicates that they are interested in your candidacy. However, due to the increase in the applicant pool this year, it is clear we MAY be unable to interview all the candidates at your priority score. If we do find that we are unable to grant an interview, you will be notified by e-mail in March."

If I have a morning interview will I be able to make my flight at 5pm?

Also, can anyone shed some light on the interview format? open vs closed file? Thanks!

I had a morning interview and the day was done at around 1, so I would think you're okay. The interview was one on one with a gentleman who had access to and had read my file, very casual and conversational overall.

Can someone please explain how the interview day works. I'm trying to schedule it and there is a date and a one hour time window. I thought it was longer than that, how does it work? Isn't there a tour and lunch (it says a chicken wrap)?

Information session/Lunch/Tour starts at 11am regardless. If you have a morning interview, you show up at your interview time and you're done around 2 after the tour. If you have an afternoon interview, you show up at at the info session and you're done after your interview.

Aah ok. Thank you!

I received this yesterday - can anyone reference me to a page on this thread discussing the meaning of different statuses? This one doesn't sound too positive to me.

The committee's file review indicates that they would like to consider your file further. We are now in the process of scheduling interviews and will continue to do so through February. Unfortunately, the committee indicates interest in far more candidates than we are able to interview. Since we are dependent on the Committee member's schedules for interview spaces, we are unable to predict when or if we will be able to schedule you this year. Please continue to check this site to learn when further action has been taken.
