2014-2015 Virginia Commonwealth University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sorry everyone for the annoying/frequent questions, but anyone know what the interview itinerary is? I have school during many of the interview dates and the latest flights are at 3:45 PM with the interview being one hour long. When is the official interview day over? Thank you so much.

Depends on when you schedule the interview. From 12pm to 2pm is the deans rep conference, then the financial aid talk, then lunch, then the tour. If you schedule a morning interview then you will be done at 2pm after the tour. If you schedule an afternoon interview, it will be after the tour and it will end about an hour after your chosen time. Regardless of your interview time, you are supposed to be present from 12-2pm.

Post interview question here: what effect do you think updates will have on our rank? I have had a couple papers published in high ranking journals since my interview and was wondering if it was worth the update

Thanks

They don't accept updates UNLESS it's a publication or new grades. So yes let them know!

Source: As per the FAQs on admissions website. Also I'm a current M1 at VCU and I sent an update about a publication myself.

What do we have to have done prior to two weeks after acceptance? I paid my deposit and filled out the matriculation form. Is there anything else to do? I was going to call today but haven't got in touch with anyone.

I think they are closed until the 5th.

This is for others who are still hoping for an interview invite. Complete ~8/7/14 and interview invite 12/21/14. Dates available were mid to late January. Will likely withdraw though so another highly qualified applicant gets the opportunity to check out this great school 🙂

I am going for an Interview at VCU in January and would love any tips or feedback from anyone's interview at the school?? Good luck to all! Thanks 🙂

Mine was a pretty relaxed and conversational interview. Just one individual interview

Congrats! Were you ever put on hold? Mind sharing stats?
I was never placed on hold. I got the MAY status about a week before the invitation to interview. My stats are 3.65/31 OOS but I think my extracurriculars and background seem to align well with their mission.

And I was rejected 24 hours later. Wow, talk about a letdown. 🙁

The real Leslie Knope would go talk to Ron Swanson and learn how to carry on.

I'll be your Ron.... "Leslie you're one of the strongest people I know. You can do this. I've never known one set ban to get you down! KEEP AT IT!!! We believe in ya!"

And happy holidays! Who knows...maybe good news is on its way from another school!

Every interviewer is different but some generic yet important things to focus on are:-

1. Why VCU? Why Richmond?
2. Why Medicine?
3. Tell me about yourself?
4. Tell me about your weaknesses? or something you regret and would like to change?

An extremely important thing to keep in mind at VCU is that your interviewer is your attorney. Obviously this might be different at other schools but at VCU your interviewer (attorney) will stand up for you in front of the entire committee (jury) and answer questions about your weaknesses and highlight your strengths. If you think there is some weakness then you might want to point it out and explain it to your interviewer. If your interviewer is unable to stand up for you if a committee member brings up something well that's not going to look good for you.

Just to give you an idea of some typical weaknesses you should talk about I'll mention some examples. Obviously these examples might not apply to you but just to give you an idea.
For example: If you had a bad freshman year in college because of extenuating circumstances then at the end of the interview make sure to bring it up. If you got a low VR score because English is your third language and you've hardly been in the country for 5 years then bring it up. If you lack some clinical or research experience etc... bring it up.

As a general principle I would bring up the weaknesses at the end of the interview. Also when going to the interview have a couple questions ready to ask the interviewer about the school and city of Richmond. You want to show some interests. This interview might feel like the school is interviewing you but in reality you should be interviewing the school too (not with stupid questions but you know important stuff).

Received II today. I was given choices for either January or Feb interview times. I chose Feb 16 since I have a week off school that time but now I'm thinking it might be a little late..although if I'm really good enough for a seat I should get one regardless of when I interview. Hoping that's true...lol

I feel like the difference in a few weeks at this point isn't that big of a deal.

Yeah, only thing is that if you interview January before the 23rd I think you should be considered for the February offer date, otherwise you'll probably have to wait till mid March.

Just withdrew my application, along with my Interview Invite. I hope my spot goes to someone really set on attending VCU; it seems like a great school, but I can't justify leaving my family and friends for 4 years when I have an acceptance closer to home. Best of luck to everyone still waiting!

Wow. Flat out rejected pre-interview just now. This is a real bummer considering it was one of my top choices and completely unexpected. 🙁Just received the short complete status on Sunday and complete late on 10/7 with LizzyM ~70. Good luck to everyone still in the running!

Interviewed right before Thanksgiving, but didn't even get the post interview survey, yet. Do you think it's worth calling the office about where my application is?

Does anybody have any advice about a hotel to stay at before my interview? Preferably within walking distance.

These are all within walking distance. Marriott and Omni are pricer. Crown Plaza is the furthest away.

Hilton Garden Inn (Downtown)
Richmond Marriott
Commonwealth Park Suites
Omni
The Berkeley Hotel
Crowne Plaza

Got the "May" status just now. LizzyM of 71. This is the first change I've seen whatsoever since being marked complete 8/5. This thread is massive, and I'm sure the answer is in here, but I assume this "May" status is pretty much a death sentence for my application, correct?

I got the may status, saying it was "clear that they may be unable" to give me an interview, and then three days later I got an invitation. I don't think any correspondence in this process can be considered a death sentence unless they actually tell you no. Have hope 🙂

Incorrect. It's actually a pretty good sign. Of the messages you can get before an II this is actually the better one, and none of them are 'death sentences'.

Swedish is right. I got the "May" status 4 days ago and got an II yesterday (LizzyM of 70). Good luck!

Withdrew my application and interview invite. While I really wanted to see their new facilities, I did not want to take an opportunity from someone who really wants to go here. Interview was for 1/19, hope someone can snag it soon!
