2014-2015 Virginia Commonwealth University Application Thread

So if we have not received any email by now we've been bumped to February?

What does the email mean that states they have reservations about interviewing you and want to hold onto your application? Thanks!

So if we did not get accepted today does that mean our chances are less for each consecutive round of acceptance ?

Well I would assume that there will be fewer people with better priority scores than us, so the threshold will be easier to meet, BUT there will be more people that have been interviewed by that point as well, so.. I think those that just barely missed the cut are probably in good shape.. The hard part is we don't know how far down in the rankings we are

Depends on how you look at it. My student interviewer was originally interviewed there in September, but wasn't accepted until March. So I guess it happens.

Can someone shed some light on what this means in terms of possible II? Good? Bad?

"The committee's file review indicates that they wish to consider your file over the next several weeks before making a decision about interview. Since they have some reservations about granting an interview, your file will be reviewed again by a small sub-committee before making a final decision"...

Yes, and I heard that there was a person who was accepted on the first or second day of the orientation in the past. It is not over until it's really over. And once you are in school it does not matter when you got in. Waiting is hard, but let's hope for the best. Happy holidays, see you in Feb!

I believe there is even a scholarship for the very last person that is accepted!

This is the exact status I received, and then about 3 weeks later it became "Congrats, you've been invited to interview." I'd say it's a great status to have, even though when I asked others it was considered to be the lowest status before rejection. Hang in there and keep your spirits high!

This means that the file reviewer saw something in your application that they did not like, however, they also liked your application enough to not reject you. So they sent your file to a subcommittee and another set of eyes will look at your application and make the decision to offer an interview or to reject you. So it could go either way, but because there is something that someone did not like, it usually is a bad sign. Although, as demonstrated by Mr. @elfman5150 , the subcommittee can like your application and offer you an interview.

So I have been complete since 9/23, but last Thursday got an email that my status had changed. Went online and nothing had changed. Still complete and still being sent to review by committee. Has anyone had this happen? I don't notice anything different. Should I call them?

Quite a few posters on here, myself included, have had a similar experience with VCU; status e-mail alerts with no discernible change in status. Your guess as to what that actually means is as good as any. If you do end up calling, please report back to here. Many of us would appreciate insight into their process.

Post interview question here: what effect do you think updates will have on our rank? I have had a couple papers published in high ranking journals since my interview and was wondering if it was worth the update

Thanks

They state that they don't accept updates I believe. Also, I think it doesn't effect your rank because the committee determines your rank (priority score) and once that is done then I don't think your file goes back to the committee, so a new rank won't be established. But I guess you could call and ask!

Just got an II! Pretty excited! Anyone have any tips at all for me regarding the interview, where to stay, etc? Also, what percentage of interviewees do they accept? Thank you guys!

Latest U.S. & World Report data (couple years old) says they interviewed 977 and offered 407 total, in-state 474/172.

Since they have more seats now than a few years ago they will probably offer around 440 seats or so. Dr. WHC also said they want to keep interviews closer to 900, usually about half IS and half OOS.

If you're coming from north of Richmond - I stayed at the Best Western Kings Quarters just off I-95 and it was pretty inexpensive since it's off season for King's Dominion and outside Richmond. Minor side note: You might need to walk outside to get to your interview (it downpoured the day I interviewed and a few other interviewees unfortunately didn't bring umbrellas).

Last year, they interviewed ~1,034. Accepted 373 for a class of 216.

Ah wow. I was just saying the higher number because of the previous post so it would have made sense to accept more because of more seats. Although, Dr. WHC still said that last year the high amount of interviews was not intended and they will interview closer to 900 this year.

I stayed with a student the night before, and she set me up with another student who let me sit in on his class which was pretty nice - we chatted about the school and after my interview we got drinks to celebrate the end of my interview and the end of her exam

I have posted this before but with 40 pages it gets lost - I am a current VCU student and if you have questions, feel free to PM me!

Wait so how did you get in contact with a student? Is there a student host program?

Yea they link to it on the interview invite page on your portal. It gives you a list of phone numbers of students with info like whether they can give you a ride in the morning, whether they have a bed/couch/etc.

After I schedule or before?

Sorry everyone for the annoying/frequent questions, but anyone know what the interview itinerary is? I have school during many of the interview dates and the latest flights are at 3:45 PM with the interview being one hour long. When is the official interview day over? Thank you so much.

I thought it was the 15th. The website says "Offers for admission are made on or before October 1 for the Early Decision Plan and October 16, December 15, February 1 and March 16"

Did they say differently at your interview?
Yes, they told us that it would be on the 16th, unless I misheard!
