2014-2015 Virginia Commonwealth University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
May status last night, complete mid August. LizzyM 69.

Going to do some digging for this if it pans out. I was in Virginia twice over the holidays so their timing kinda sucks for me lol.

Anybody interested in a Facebook group for accepted students?
Haven't seen one yet.

I really tried my best to go through old posts because I'm sure it's been asked before but this thread is so long. Do those of you who have interviewed have any tips for how to prepare? Were the interviews generally laid back or more technical/ethical?

My interview was very laid back and conversational. Just the normal questions nothing complicated or ethical for me.

The interview is decently laid back, but my interviewer did ask some ethical questions towards the end (at which point I was kind of in laid back mode, making it hard to give a response without sounding too scripted), so it wouldn't hurt to be prepared.

It's an interview with just one person correct?

Rejected just now. second rejection in a couple hours. no good news in what feels like forever. gotta love the medical school application process. good luck to all

Hey everyone! This thread is massive so I'm assuming everyone has similar questions but my status has read "The committee's file review indicates that they are interested in your candidacy. However, due to the increase in the applicant pool this year, it is clear we MAY be unable to interview all the candidates at your priority score. If we do find that we are unable to grant an interview, you will be notified by e-mail in March." since 10/6/14....such a long time!!! How long has everyone had to wait between getting this status and a further update? Are most of these people getting interviews or are most in limbo still?

Hey there applicants! I offered my help many many pages ago but thought i'd check in again. I'm a 4th year student who is very familiar with both campuses (richmond and inova), so I'd be happy to answer any questions about the school, faculty, interview process, etc. I actually know the exact process to how people are granted interviews and how acceptances are handled, but I'm pretty sure I'm not able to give specifics, but I'd be happy to answer any general questions (Or specific questions in a PM). I actually had to google this LizzyM score, and believe me, that is wayyyy too basic a calculation to figure out who should be getting interviews.

I can tell you going through my interviews right now (applying for an above avg competitive field), i'm receiving interviews at basically all the big time east coast institutions (you name it, I've probably visited). MCV has a great history (I think it's top 20 in oldest med schools) and is greatly respected across the country (but prob more so on the east, simply because it's located on the east!) so I would not hesitate to come here again. Anyway hang in there and good luck. I know that every year there's more and more applicants so the process tends to get more and more drawn out.

Maybe this is too specific, but is it a good or bad sign if you receive the "may" status? How likely are you to get an ii at this point?

So it's more on the good side I'd say. I can't put a specific percentage on it but a lot of interviews invites go out to people who get that status. I would use say be patient and hope for the best! I'm pretty sure that's the status I got back many years ago but I got my invite a few days after and this was in Oct. Hope that helps

So what is the difference between this MAY and FURTHER status I keep hearing about? I believe I have the MAY status. Why does a person get one versus the other?

I'd like to know too. Maybe @k0b3 can answer?

So this is one area where I do not have specific information regarding. In years past, getting the MAY status was generally believed to be a higher pre-interview score. However, what I believe happens is that let's say you get a pre interview score of 8 (this is a completely random number i'm using). Then let's say this is assigned a MAY status since you're in the top x% of applicants and you would have gotten an interview invite. However, a few days later after a more applicants are reviewed, you can suddenly fall out of top x% that get the II. So even though you got the MAY status, you would not get the interview right away, vs. some who gets it 3 days later.

So long story short, generally it has always been believed the MAY stats was slightly higher than the FURTHER status, but people tend to get interviews from both categories. Sorry I can't be more of a help on this topic, just know if you have either status, you can get an II at anytime (weeks, months later is possible).

Is the next acceptance date on 2/1 or 2/2? I know there was some confusion for the December date.

It says 2/1 but also "if any of these dates falls on a weekend the offers will be made on the following Monday." So then 2/2, but last two times it did come a day later... so either 2/2 or 2/3.

A couple days ago I got an email invite to VCU's pre-matriculation program, and I was wondering if anyone here had some insight into the program. What's provided? Is it worth cutting 4 weeks out my summer break? Will it help with transitioning to med school life. @k0b3 have you or anyone you know gone through this program?

Thanks!

Anyone have luck with in the area emails? I've had the MAY status since August.

So from what I remember talking to my classmates who went through this, they all regretted it, saying that it really didn't help and they would have rather used the summer break. I think it was just being able to sit in a few classes. To be honest, I also would use the summer break because any advantage you will have initially by doing this will be gone in a week or two, as EVERYONE else will catch up. Enjoy your breaks!!!!

MAY status today, after a brief stint on the FURTHER status back in November. Complete since the end of July. Guess I'm still in this game of cryptic status updates...

The amount of energy and time devoted to these hilariously cryptic statuses is cracking me up right now. Capitalizing the keystone word in the status is Owen Meany-ish and so so funny. I am just eating this up.
I know right? VCU is just trying to suck me back in, but I already gave up on this guessing game. The status updates mean nothing unless it's an II or an acceptance 🙂

Edit: Actually on second read, the application cycle is pretty stressful for the applicants and with VCU stirring the pot with these cryptic status updates, the energy and frustration are understandably palpable. Hang in there everyone! Let's just block out any irrelevant notifications and keep working towards our goals to becoming physicians 🙂

Does anyone know if it's possible to find out the name of your interviewer before the interview?

They told me when I got to the school. You could probably call and ask the morning before your interview, I'm not sure if that would seem weird or not.

In all honesty I don't think this would make a difference to you for interview day. Some of the interviewers are M4 students, so nothing to research on them, and the interview is all about you. Your interest in them won't give you any brownie points.

got the post interview hold tonight. complete mid july, may status in early october, II dec 10, interviewed dec 17th.

MAY status yesterday as well, was also complete in late August.
