2014-2015 Virginia Commonwealth University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just got this status update:

"The committee's file review indicates that they are interested in your candidacy. However, due to the increase in the applicant pool this year, it is clear we MAY be unable to interview all the candidates at your priority score. If we do find that we are unable to grant an interview, you will be notified by e-mail in March."

Not sure what this means...
Mine was also changed to this ^...

Not sure what it really means? Is this the best status right now or have some people gotten IIs?

When were you complete if you don't mind me asking? And are you IS or OOS? As far as the message I wouldn't sweat it. To me it just sounds like a generic "we still haven't made a decision yet" worded in a slightly different way.

OOS, LizzyM~75, AMCAS verified in June, complete 7/12 at VCU.

I'm hoping it's is a good sign for everyone that got this, since before it just said my app was complete.

From last year's thread:
The following was taken from last year's thread, which was subsequently taken from the previous year's thread. 😛 Hopefully it'll help? I'm not sure how accurate it is though.

"Application Status:

1) "The Committee's file review indicates that they are very interested in your candidacy. There is another increase in the applicant pool this year, but we are trying to get all candidates at your priority score interviewed as soon as possible. Please watch for an e-mail from us regarding a possible interview date."

2) "The committee's file review indicates that they are interested in your candidacy. However, due to the increase in the applicant pool this year, it is clear we MAY be unable to interview all the candidates at your priority score. If we do find that we are able to grant an interview you will be notified by e-mail."

3) "The committee's file review indicates that they would like to consider your file further. We are now in the process of scheduling interviews and will continue to do so through February. Unfortunately, the committee indicates interest in far more candidates than we are able to interview. Since we are dependent on the Committee member's schedules for interview spaces, we are unable to predict when or if we will be able to schedule you this year. Please continue to check this site to learn when further action has been taken."

4) "The committee's file review indicates that they wish to consider your file over the next several weeks before making a decision about interview. Since they have some reservations about granting an interview, your file will be reviewed again by a small sub-committee before making a final decision. Please continue to check this site to learn when further action has been taken."

5) "REJECTED"

#1 - you are interviewed
#2/3 - may be interviewed (still not sure how they are different or which is better)
#4 - subcommitee message
#5 - rejection."

I believe I would take that as being 'small pooled.'

At least you guys got a status update, indicating they actually are proactive with your application. Mine is so dull: "Your file is complete, and has been forwarded to the Admissions Committee for further decision."

Hmm I am interested in what other statuses people are seeing!

Interesting that the end of the MAY status changed. Last year it said you'll hear from them if they "are able to grant an interview" and this year it says you'll hear from them if they "are unable to grant an interview."

I think I'm reading into this too much...

See the thing I posted about 4 comments up.
Yeah I saw, but I'm just wondering if there are any #1 statuses right now or if people will get moved from other #s to that status. THanks though!

I think most people stay at their status until they either get an interview or get rejected. I assume they limit #1s this early in the cycle.

I'm still at complete!

Edit: this is the exact wording --
"Your M.D. file is now complete. The Admissions Committee will now do a comprehensive review of your application. Once the review is complete, your file will be prioritized, and interviews will be granted based on your priority score and the date your file was completed."

Edit 2: I submitted 7/10/14

what does that even mean? mine has said it's been forwarded to the admissions committee for over a week. what does that mean for me?

+1 for me, except I submitted 7/3/14..

So many statuses...so much confusion lol. I need some excitement at the moment, so VCU, whatever your decision, just make it entertaining and asap please. thanks.

The statuses don't really mean much unless you have been rejected. I had one of the "MAY" statuses at this point when I applied and I got one of the earliest interview dates in September. So I know it's hard but try not to read too much into them 🙂

Small pooled would be something similar to 'Eligible for Interview' it isn't an interview, but you have gotten past the secondary without getting rejected, and you are considered competitive for an interview but you might not get one. For example, if a school takes 5000 apps, sends out 4000 secondaries, and then small pools 1000, then gives 500 interviews, then making it to the small pool means a 50% chance of interview (all these numbers are just MADE UP examples, but this is what a small pool is).

Forwarded to admissions committee just means complete and not reject yet, your still in the stage before the 'small pool.' I think what VCU did in sending the email was nice, they informed him that they are considering for an interview. Its not as happy as an II, but I don't think its a bad thing at all.

+1, this is the best answer! Hard to hold neurosis back sometimes. But I just read last years thread, and then I feel better. Got a long ways to go, I am getting comfortable right now.

Thank you--that makes me relieved!

Anyone else keep getting status update emails and having no actual change in status? I've gotten two emails in 24 hours with no change in my app status on the website.

I submitted 7/10, I didn't get a status update...Anyone past this date get one?

Whenever I try to send in a scanned copy of my green card via email, it keeps saying that the email failed to deliver... anyone else have this issue? I submitted a tech request through their website but honestly, this has put me behind 4 days 🙁.

On an unrelated note, do natural-born citizens have to send anything in to admissions as far as p
"proof of citizenship" goes?? I probably should've asked this a while ago 😉

Submitted 7/13, mine says: "Your M.D. file is now complete. The Admissions Committee will now do a comprehensive review of your application. Please do not call the Admissions Office requesting special dates. Please continue to read all paragraphs below."

It said only if you are a non citizen I think

my application has been complete since 7/09 and still says "forwarded to admissions", how long does it take for them to go through our applications usually?

Has anyone gotten a secondary yet?

Mine says, "Your Application to the UM Miller School of Medicine is complete and is currently being reviewed by the Admissions Committee."

Edit: I hate this.

One of my letter writers will not have my letter in for at least another week. Perhaps I could ask for them to mark me complete with out the letter just so they can get a move on my application? I'm not expecting it to be one of my best letters anyway...

After digging a little in last year's thread I found a' ranking system' that apparently has been around since 2011, but may or may not be true:

Application Status:

You are the man HandsomeRob!

One more clarification on the difference between the "MAY" and "FURTHER" status:

The OFFICIAL answer on 2 & 3 you have all been waiting for (but are going to hate):

#2 ("May" status) -- You are a great applicant and we want to interview you but you are not yet in the "Interview Now" zone. Your priority score has been assigned. This is a favorable hold status -- basically a pre-interview "waitlist."

#3 ("Further" status) -- We haven't finished reviewing your application yet. We might be distracted by other candidates, research, or teaching duties, but we will get back to you soon. Sorry about that. This is basically a wait list for #2 with the possibility of going directly to #0 (i.e., an interview invite)

I would consider #2 to be the better of the two since it indicates you have been given a positive review and they are waiting to invite you for an interview. #3 is a blind hold, whereas #2 is a hold with a favorable score (just not quite favorable enough for an immediate or promised interview invite)."

Wonder how these scores are calculated...

Are we allowed to send in more than 3 LORs - I know we are required to send in 3 but how many optional ones can we send?
