2014-2015 Virginia Commonwealth University Application Thread

Been complete since July 11th...but no update after this:
Your M.D. file is now complete. The Admissions Committee will now do a comprehensive review of your application. Once the review is complete, your file will be prioritized, and interviews will be granted based on your priority score and the date your file was completed.

I'm in the same situation and e-mailed them today. I'll PM you if I get a response.

You and me are in the exact same boat. Complete since the 11th also. I am beginning to think that a reject might be in my future.

just got rejected. wow i thought i did a good job on the cancer question on the secondary. ohh well hope other schools invite me...🙁

I have been keeping up with this forum for a while now, so I guess it is just as good of a time as ever to post. I just got a status update! It's not super promising, but at least it isn't a rejection!

"The committee's file review indicates that they would like to consider your file further. We are now in the process of scheduling interviews and will continue to do so through February. Unfortunately, the committee indicates interest in far more candidates than we are able to interview. Since we are dependent on the Committee member's schedules for interview spaces, we are unable to predict when or if we will be able to schedule you this year. Please continue to check this site to learn when further action has been taken."

Has anyone received an II after receiving this status??

I'm OOS(but graduated HS in VA) with below average stats(28/3.7) but decent EC's.

VCU is my top choice so I hope it works out!

Further is not the worst one, in fact, some people got interviews within a few days last year, while some never got interveiws. But it is the most ambiguous status. So basically your not out yet!

Just got rejected post-secondary was complete 8/7. I was wait-listed here last year, I guess they didn't like the changes I made to my application. If they knew they were going to reject me this fast I wish they would have done it pre-secondary to save me some money. Oh well. IS 3.9+ GPA 32 MCAT if anyone was wondering.

These guys are being brutal!

Submitted 7/14
Complete 7/16
"MAY" 8/9

Fingers crossed! Good luck to the rest of y'all too.

if you don't mind, what did the rejection message say exactly?

Ooof. My heart goes out to all those in silent limbo. 🙁 I have no idea how VCU triages all their apps, but they must be going through them very fast if they're constantly running out of II dates and are scheduling into February. They've been rejecting a lot of people with very good stats, so I'm thankful to have not gotten the axe just yet.

I was complete on 7/11, got the "very interested" status on 7/30, and nothing since then. I think they update "very interested" applicants ~2 weeks after their status update, while people with "MAY" or "further" statuses have reported IIs as little as a few days afterwards. I suppose if you get a may/further status, to take that as a good sign – it's possibly even better than the very interested one! 🙂

A lot of IS have gotten the 'Further' status then received a secondary exactly 3 days after. Wishing you the same luck!

It seems contradict how they say they review apps. They say they give priority based on completion date but how is that possible if they don't review in order? Starting to lose hope that there will be any spots left. Silence is the worst haha

i just dont like the fact that they decided to go ahead and change the prompt and review both those who had submitted already and those who haven't had to write the new prompt. I can't really believe that you can judge applications fairly when the prompts are different...oh well cant cry over spilled milk. Best of luck to the rest of u guys!

Been complete since 7/9...status still hasn't changed from complete, and it's been a whole month...stats are 3.7+GPA and 36 balanced MCAT. Have no research experience but lots of volunteering, shadowing, and community service.

gah... still at the "File complete" status... been like that since 7/11

Been complete since 7/11 too =(

Been complete since 7/10 and nothing but crickets! Ughhhhh

I'm in the same boat as you. Complete since 7/10 with no updates for the past month, but I haven't been straight up rejected yet, so I've got that going for me, which is nice.

Wow, At least there are alot of us. I think its pretty clear that they don't review by completion date. I am another 7/11 complete. I have no idea how they reveiw apps though. I feel like they just throw darts at a board, or draw names from a hat. I mean its not stat based, it doesn't appear to be IS/OOS based, its not completion date based. So I am not sure what that leaves for us... Maybe we should go back to the mass meltdown plan.

No news is good news right?

Does VCU accept updates? I have status #4 (I think)

EDIT: jk, found this: Does VCU accept update letters to applications for admission? The only updates that we accept are grades from courses that were completed after an application was submitted and academic publication material that was published after an application was submitted. We do not accept letters of interest.

Bummer, I have a lot to say about why I think this school is awesome!

From speaking with the admissions office, my understanding is that one committee member reviews your application once it is complete and assigns a score, and everyone with a certain score will get whatever status update ('May', 'Further', etc) on certain dates. It is just like the process for being reviewed by the committee once your interview is over- when you go to committee review is dependent on when your interviewer is able to make it to the Monday meetings following your interview. In the same way, I think those of you still waiting to hear back, your reviewer has a pile of apps to review based on completion date but just has not gotten to them yet, whereas other reviewers have worked faster and gotten through some later dates.

Just one person looks at each application? I don't like that. 🙁

Although, if they are truthful, if we get any of the first 3 scores we should get an interview since we have earlier completion fates than others who received interviews after the "further" status. So all it takes is one person to look at your app somewhat favorably!

I like the way you think, and I really like VCU! I would be thrilled to interview there.

I sincerely hope this "sophisticated" admission process is not a reflection of the mindset on how VCU managing the school....🙁

Any M1, M2, M3 & M4 bros like to comment on that?

Just received the "MAY" status today and doing a dance by myself in my apartment! Its the first thing I've heard from any med school, and I've been really worried since my MCAT score went down 2 points (from 30 to 28). Hoping that this will turn into an interview!!

For those interested:
Application Complete 7/25
GPA 3.8 (cumulative and science)

Here's hoping for some continued underdog love!!
