2014-2015 Wayne State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I interview in jan. Accepted 2 weeks later. And had something in the mail sent to me about a month after that with a temp wayne user and pass.

I got accepted during the Feb date and now it's been a month with no info regarding an account...My official letter didn't tell me to do anything except to accept the offer to hold my spot. I don't know what to do next...

Any Canadian Wayne students? I have money questions...

I'm kinda worried about paying the ridiculous high OOS tuition with no scholarship. However, I know that WSU accepts the most Canadians and there are ways Canadians are managing. I'd highly appreciate some insight. A bank loan won't suffice especially considering the terrible exchange rate. Where am I supposed to get the rest of the money?

Thanks in advance

call and ask about the account info, things maybe different for canadian/international students because you guys don't do fafsa. which may primarily be why i think you haven't received yours yet.

I haven't received financial aid information either, and I've been accepted since October. My account is set up and everything. Have people already gotten theirs?

Have you heard anything yet today? I'm on the alternate list still too, and I keep checking my email over and over... haha
I feel ya brother. I have to charge my phone because I've been abusing the mail refresh :O haha

Edit: just heard. No change. What exactly does "multiple accept" mean?

Application and Acceptance Protocols - Applicants
The AAMC recommends the following to help ensure that all M.D. and M.D.-Ph.D. applicants receive timely notification about the outcome of their application and to protect schools and programs from having unfilled positions in their entering classes. These protocols are often referred to as “Traffic Rules” by admissions officers and pre-health advisors. Prospective applicants, their advisors, and admission staff at medical schools and programs should all be aware of these Application and Acceptance Protocols for applicants.

The AAMC recommends that as an applicant to a M.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. program, you:

1. Understand, and comply with these Applicant Responsibilities as well as with the application, acceptance, and admission procedures at each school or program to which you

2.Provide accurate and truthful information in all aspects of your application, interview(s), acceptance, and admission processes for each school or program to which you apply.

3. Submit all application documents (e.g., primary and secondary application forms, transcript, letters of evaluation/recommendation, fees, etc.) on or before the school or program's published deadline date.

4. Notify all relevant medical school application services of any change, permanent or temporary, your contact information (e.g., mailing address, telephone number, and email address).

5. If you will be unavailable for an extended period of time (e.g., during foreign travel, vacation, holidays) during the application/admission process:

a. Provide instructions regarding your application, and the authority to respond to any offers of acceptance to a parent or other responsible individual in your absence.

b. Inform all schools or programs at which your application remains under consideration of this person's name and contact information.

6. Respond promptly to a school's or program's invitation for interview. If you cannot appear for a previously scheduled interview, notify the school or program immediately that you need to cancel via the school or program’s preferred method.

7. Begin the steps necessary to determine your eligibility for financial aid. This may include filing need-analysis forms early, and encouraging your parents (when required) to file the appropriate income tax forms.

8. In fairness to other applicants, if you have decided before April 30 not to attend a medical school or program that has offered you an acceptance, promptly withdraw your application from that school(s) or program(s) by written correspondence or the method preferred.

9. If you receive an offer of acceptance from more than one school or program, choose the school at which you will enroll by April 30. Then, promptly withdraw your application, by written correspondence, from all other schools or programs that have offered you an acceptance.

10. Withdraw your application from consideration at all other schools or programs as soon as you enroll, or start an orientation program prior to enrollment, at a U.S. or Canadian school or program.

*If any date falls on a weekend/holiday the recommendation(s) will apply to the following business day.

Yup I was just about to post this too.

Anyone know anything about a date for the second look day? I've been accepted to MSU too and their's are April 16/17th... I'm hoping I can check out Wayne again too before the end of April now.

I just got accepted off the alternate list today, but am now in the predicament of deciding between MSUCOM and Wayne. The pros and the cons seem to be equal for both. At Wayne I worry that there isn't as big of a community within the student body, but there is more opportunity for networking within their hospital networks (since I already have contacts in their networks). I also identify more with the DO philosophy, but still have reservations about the match process and residency merger (also having to take both COMLEX and USMLE) and my ability to specialize as a DO.

Thoughts, SDN friends? I'm super excited about my acceptance to Wayne and this is the best possible problem to have (I never thought I'd have a choice as to where I go to medical school!!), but wow is this stressful!

Also for those interested, my stats were MCAT 27, sGPA 3.54, overall GPA 3.74, interviewed in October

Conglatulations , you should grab WSUSOM with no delay,MD SCHOOL and your stats are below their median of MCAT 31 and GPA 3.8

To be honest I would go with Wayne, but the "right" answer is where you're most comfortable I guess. Give both schools a chance on "Second Look" day (if MSU's hasn't happened yet) and see which feels right to ya!
Then again, I haven't gotten in to either so I guess take my advice with a grain of salt.
3.85 GPA, 32 mcat trying to make it off this alternate lost over here haha.

We have a great community within in the student body. If you can't form relationships with people in all of the small group things we do here (esp. anatomy), then that is on you. Also, it is pretty hard to get to know all of your classmates when you are spread out to 3 different campuses like at MSUCOM. Also, MSUCOM's statewide clinical system would probably have you moving after year 2 or at the very least your community will evaporate as others do. At Wayne the worst thing that happens is you get placed at Oakwood which is ~20 mins from Midtown.

You should be focused on the bold though as the point of medical school is to be able to enter the specialty you want and preferably the residency program you want. With new MD schools starting to graduate their classes and other MD schools expanding their classes and the current generation of PDs and chairs opinions of DOs already set, I don't see the merger changing much in the short term. Ask @themockjock how he would've felt applying to residency as a DO.

I just called to ask about second look day... it's tomorrow. I guess this Yooper isn't going to make it there in time for that. 🙁

Yeah, I just called as well since I live close enough that I could drive tomorrow, but they're all filled up. My heart is telling me one thing but my head is telling me another! I really could have used that second look day to get a better perspective.

Wow, we had to call to find out about second day look? How did people even know about it if it filled up already?

I know someone in forums mentioned that they only invite people with multiple acceptances, but I still didn't get any information =/

How would they even know if we have multiple acceptances unless we tell them? It kinda sucks that anyone accepted yesterday can't attend the second look day.

Where else have you been accepted? I've gotta decide between MSUCHM and Wayne.

Parts of your AMCAS are shared between schools. This includes acceptances. I assume they gave first priority to applicants that have been holding multiple acceptances the longest.

I dunno, still seems kind of strange. Also strange that no one posted on SDN that they heard about second day look before calling the school. Thanks for the speculation though.

They emailed some people last week inviting them to the second look day. Outside of having multiple acceptances, I don't know how they chose who to invite since not everyone with multiple acceptances was invited either.

I mean, DO is fine if you want to do primary care, or even non-primary care non-academic, PP stuff in less competitive fields (GS, gas, rads, etc). The door is basically closed to any ivory tower academic anything. Also, as a DO unless you are an absolute superstar the door is essentially closed to you for competitive ACGME spots like Neurosurg, ENT, etc. There are some AOA residencies in these specialties, but far fewer and the quality is much more variable (AOA has much lower standards for accreditation than ACGME, just a fact).

I mean DO is a vastly, no question, 100000% better option than Caribbean or something, but there still are doors closed to DOs that aren't for MDs. This is especially true in academia and competitive subspecialties.

Applying as a DO would have been a total nightmare going through a very competitive specialty... I only saw 2 DOs on my entire trail and neither of them matched.

Edit: Also, forgot to add. While you may want to do something not competitive now, that might change as you go through, don't let that door close.

Quick question. I'm on the alternate list and at the bottom of my decision letter it says the following:
"Applicants who have matriculated to any U.S. allopathic or osteopathic school of medicine during the present application year will be withdrawn from any further consideration for admission by Wayne State University School of Medicine"

Wayne is my absolute top choice, but my only other acceptance is at an Osteopathic school which starts on 06/15/2015. Does the above statement mean that if I matriculate to that DO school, my application to WSUSOM will be thrown out as of that date? I was not aware that MD schools could see your DO acceptance offers, and vice versa.

Yup, pretty sure that's exactly what that means

I’m trying to decide between MSU CHM (so their MD program, not DO) and Wayne. I love Wayne, but there were a couple thing that MSU has to offer that I wanted to make sure were parallel to what Wayne had.

One was the sense of collaboration I saw between the students. For example, M1’s have access to previous years tests and study material because older students keep adding them to a shared Box folder for anyone to access. Do Wayne students do something similar? Is there a lot of competitiveness amongst students?

It seems that Wayne is a bit on the disorganized side in terms of admin stuff. I’m okay with that, but my concern is, at the end of the day does it interfere with your education?

How are student academic support services? Are they actually helpful?

My tour guide said that if you do the co-curriculm program you get an extra month off in fourth year. It made me concerned that you might not get enough time off for residency applications otherwise?

Thanks for any insight you might have!

1) Sure do. Study material that is, not tests.
2) Not that I've seen
3) No
4+5) Pretty great actually. I have found the counselors and academic affairs people to be very available and helpful
6) There are 2 months during 4th year you can use for "vacation", so the co-curricular program adds flexibility but isn't essential. As far as applying for residency and matters relating to 4th year, I'll defer to @themockjock

I am most of the way through 2nd year and I am quite happy with Wayne. Wayne gives you a lot of resources to be successful, but the responsibility to make the most of it is on you.

Thanks for your post.

I had a question aside from whats being discussed above.

Do most students have a car? How difficult is it to get around detroit without a car?

Thanks

You need a car by 3rd year. The administration will not make adjustments for you not having a car. I would think not having a car in the first 2 years might be doable if you live in midtown but other than that...

The fourth year technically runs from July-May. Everyone (except for rare exceptions like if you have to make up a rotation) gets May off. Then, you get 2 other months off that you can use however you want. Most people take July or Aug off to take Step 2 and then one month off out of Nov/Dec/Jan for interviewing and schedule interviews during that month. You will have some interviews that run during times when you are on rotation, so most people schedule easy rotations (radiology, anesthesiology) during those months where you can take off a lot of time to interview.

If you do co-curricular 1st/2nd year, you get an extra month off in addition to what I listed above. So you could take July off for step 2 and Nov and Dec off for interviewing if you wanted. Personally I didn't do this because I never drank the co-curricular kool-aid and thought that pseudo-mandatory volunteering and being told what kind of volunteering had to be done was sort of stupid. Regardless, I wouldn't have wanted an extra month off. Between my away rotations, Sub-Is, etc. I feel like I didn't have enough time to do rotations in ancillary fields to what I'm going into as it was without co-curricular.

That said you can always do co-curricular and then just not take the extra month off if you don't want to give you that flexibility...

Does the school care about the final year GPA after being accepted?

Thanks @joker2400 and @themockjock for the great answers! They were really helpful.

How is Wayne's simulation center?
It's worked for me so far. We don't really use it the 1st 2 years. You have physical diagnosis in the skills center with standardized patients in the middle part of 2nr year but that's it really.

Does the school care about the final year GPA after being accepted?
Don't fail, obviously. I am fairly certain they won't rescind your acceptance if you have a lower GPA

Someone earlier mentioned microbio labs...When/How often do these occur? And for how many months?
Do other schools not have required microbio labs?

3-4x/week for ~4 weeks in aug/sept of 2nd year. I have no clue if other schools require them

Does the simulation center have patient simulators - the dummy kind?

Thanks for answering all our questions!

can anyone enlighten me regarding what areas of Detroit to ABSOLUTELY avoid for living or visiting.

can anyone enlighten me regarding what areas of Detroit to ABSOLUTELY avoid for living or visiting.

I think most people tend to stick to downtown, Brush park, midtown, cork town, Greek town and Mexican town, while avoiding the east side. There are always exceptions, just be smart (don't go down dark alleys at night while drunk). This is just Detroit-I live in Brush park. A decent number of students live further out in places like Grosse Pointe, Royal Oak, Hamtramck, even Troy and Ann Arbor.

Alright guys, i'm on the wait list, so naturally, i'm irrationally trying to figure out my chances of getting in.
- I've seen on here that last year, Wayne gave out ~500 offers from the ~700 interviewees
- The wait list letter says that they offer ~40 spots/ acceptance date (there are 6 acceptance dates, excluding EDP)
40*6= 240

Am I correct in thinking that, at this point, they have given out about half of the offers for this cycle, which would mean my chances of getting in off the wait list are still pretty good? Or am I missing something?

There are still some pretty good chances. Don't forget that after April 30 applicants can only hold one acceptance so there will be some waitlist movement around then. Wayne also accepts a lot of Canadian applicants, so more movement will occur around May 15 when Canadian results come out.

Hi everyone! Sorry to ask this again, I know the answer is somewhere in this 18 page thread, but I cannot find it.. Do we send updates to

[email protected]
?

If I remember correctly, I recall seeing on this thread that a brief note of acceptance is required to accept an offer of admission - does anyone know how much time you have to do so? I haven't received anything in the mail yet (offer from the March 25th) and emailed the office early this week but haven't heard back yet... getting a little nervous here =S

from what i remember you have 2 weeks to accept your offer from when you get it via e-mail (NOT snail mail).
also, admissions isn't in the habit of sending a notice that they got your acceptance of their offer because they have so many matriculants, so just call up and ask if they got it. congrats
