2014-2015 Wayne State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If I remember correctly, I recall seeing on this thread that a brief note of acceptance is required to accept an offer of admission - does anyone know how much time you have to do so? I haven't received anything in the mail yet (offer from the March 25th) and emailed the office early this week but haven't heard back yet... getting a little nervous here =S
I would check with them. I was accepted on the same day and about a week later I got stuff in the mail from them. You have three weeks to send in your acceptance notice, but the packet they mail you has a form in it to send back too.

Hi everyone! Sorry to ask this again, I know the answer is somewhere in this 18 page thread, but I cannot find it.. Do we send updates to

[email protected]
?

Have you sent your update yet? I sent an update pre-interview about one of my publications that got accepted. When I sent the update I got an email back immediately that said they would read my email and reply within 1-2 days. Then, a day later, I got an email from the office saying that the update had been added to my application.

I just sent another update last week because I got a research fellowship at a institution different than where I did my undergrad. But I haven't heard anything.. No email at all.

Has anyone sent an update letter recently? If you have, did you hear back from them?

Non-need-based aid includes merit scholarships, will they use GPA,MCAT score,or both to determine eligibility?

I received an email from WSU SOM regarding merit based scholarships. This was their opening statement:

"The admissions committee and the Dean's Scholarhsip Committee from Wayne State University School of Medicine has carefully reviewed your application and the Committees are very impressed with your credentials, both academic and personal."

I believe that it includes not only just "academic" (GPA/MCAT), but also "personal" accomplishments as well.

They'll use whatever they like. I suspect the greatest factor will be other competitive acceptances.

Anyone wait longer than 3 weeks for their financial aid package?
I am still waiting for the email and thinking about giving them a call tomorrow.
Did you check if you have unsatisfied requirements on their website ?if there is any .you need to finish it first

Did you receive an email from WSU SOM regarding merit based scholarships with the same initial package , or separate on a later date. when?

Just had my interview. My interviewer was an angel, he was such a nice guy! However the receptionist told me that my interviewer usually takes the whole hour. He only took about 20-30 min with me. If felt very fast. Im a little worried especially since March 25th is the last scheduled acceptance release date. Can anyone else tell me if their interview was similar to this.

Do not feel bad about this at all. Mine was an hour and 20 minutes long, and I had to catch up to the group. They all finished lunch already. So I grabbed a sandwich and water, and tried my best to politely eat fast. Awkward when they also are trying to ask you questions. I'm still waitlisted. Length is not indicative of an acceptance. 🙂

I received it in a separate email on March 17th.
To make it clear,at this time, do you have both "need based scholarship + private merit scholarship" ?at their website, they will offer private scholarship on summer/early fall !!

Is lecture attendance during pre-clinical years optional? Can you stream lectures from home?

From what the tour guides told us, yes on both accounts.

100% optional, the first week in anatomy/histology usually most people show up, but attendance quickly drops off and by the wintertime it's not uncommon to have only 10-20 people (out of a class of 300) in a given lecture. There are a couple of required lectures scattered throughout, usually things with live patients etc. that they can't stream due to HIPAA. There are only a couple throughout the whole year though.

All of the lectures are streamed, available as .mp4 files so you can speed them up to 1.5-2x speed with your video player of choice (I used VLC). They also make .mp3 audio files of each lecture available if you want to listen in the car, while you're working out, or whatever.

The streaming site is quite nice (stream.med.wayne.edu) and the lectures are uploaded quickly, usually within an hour of the end of the lecture.

So uhhh...how much do lectures vary from year to year? =)

I was looking at the online calendar for year 1 which would be for the incoming class. Can any current students comment on Thanksgiving break. It seems like the week of Thanksgiving has no required class. Is it common for students to leave the weekend before thanksgiving and study using the videos? Since I am OOS and from pretty far away, I would ideally like to go home or to my GFs and study there.

Granted I'm several years out from the pre-clinical world, but it varies. Some blocks do have pre-recorded videos from years past with faculty support on Blackboard, office hours, etc. That though is very much the exception. The vast majority are live... they generally tweak from year to year, update things, etc. Although recently they have made some fairly large changes to some classes and units, especially as Dr. Bosch, who runs 2nd year pathophys, becomes more involved and takes over more and more lectures from other people (this is a good thing).

I looked at the calendar, there's no required class, you can leave and go wherever you want during that week.

I think it is merit based but i could be wrong. The reason im thinking it is merit based is because there are minimum scores (Step1, Step2, class standing, ect.) that I must meet in order to continue my scholarship which is not typically required in need based scholarships as far as i know.

if we have multiple acceptances, how are we suppose to notify wayne that we are accepting their offer?

Before I bother the administration with this question, has anyone contacted them about the timing of the first wave of acceptances off the alternate list?

I'm curious too. My understanding is that it would be via email at some point tomorrow but that's just what the email led me to believe.

Hopefully you mean @Wayne, right? 😛
But yeah, I guess that'd be good to know before I chew my fingers to the bone with anxiety tomorrow.

Yes, I meant @Wayne lol. This whole process has thrown my brain for a loop, but I would like to keep fingers so I can break my mail app clicking refresh.

I just got a response from Wayne. The Admissions Committee will be meeting Monday to evaluate where they are.

I'm pretty sure that last year they didn't send anything out until May 16, at which point they did a big batch. I don't know why that's advantageous for them, but maybe they'll do the same thing this year

May 15 was the multiple acceptance deadline last year. They moved it up to April 30 this year. I assume it is only a matter of convenience for the committee to send out acceptances after this deadline.

So hearing anything tomorrow is unlikely then? I'm not counting on it but who knows.

I don't think my email is undeniably conclusive given last years thread:

Called admissions and they said they are going to release the wave of waitlist-acceptances next week -- most likely on Monday or Tuesday -- as opposed to the traditional May 15/16th offers. Best of luck everyone!!

And yet they did indeed send out acceptances on May 16; quite a few it seemed.

First few weeks of May up to May 15 is also when a lot of Canadian acceptances come out, and since there are quite a few Canadians accepted to Wayne that may be another reason

Well, has anyone heard anything today? 😀

Yes, I read everything, but even one person hearing something good would be great!

I haven't heard anything yet, personally. You could try calling and asking about it. They were supposed to have a committee meeting today.

Oh! They are? I think those meetings are usually at night, so we probably have a little bit of a wait yet! Good luck to all!

This is 100% accurate.
"The elves are still building your toys, don't worry, it'll come any day now."
Like, the toys are under the tree. I can see them. Everyone else got their stuff like, 6 months ago. But Dad's over here like "Alright, buddy. Maybe if you paint the house and rotate my tires, you can open your toys sometime in the next 1- 90 days!"

Hey guys! Does anyone know what the secondary prompts were? I was wondering so I could start pre-writing my secondaries.

Thanks!

Question I (Choose one of the questions to answer)
A. Briefly describe a work or educational situation in which you were a member of a small group and the ways in which you learned from and taught others. What were the positive and negative aspects of this teaching and learning experience for you?
B. The practice of medicine often involves working with patients of varying backgrounds and from diverse communities. What are your experiences and thoughts about diversity and how would you apply them in the practice of medicine?

Question II (Non Residents must answer Question A – Michigan residents may choose any of the 3 to answer)
A. Discuss the reasons you wish to pursue your medical education at Wayne State University School of Medicine. What do you anticipate being the most challenging and most rewarding?
B. Discuss your reasons for selecting medicine as a career. What benefits do you feel a career would offer that other careers would not?
C. Briefly discuss what particular non-academic experiences (e.g. community service, employment, patient care activities) most influenced your decision to pursue a medical career. Why and how did this influence your decision?

Question III (Choose one of the questions to answer)
A. One of your pediatric patients has been diagnosed with a progressive degenerative disorder. You have recommended a stem cell therapy which, when completed, has been proven to arrest the progress of the disorder and, in some cases, reverse its effects, resulting in normal growth and development. Based on their beliefs, the parents have not given their approval for the stem cell therapy but will give their approval for a previously widely used drug therapy which slowed the disorder's progress but did not arrest or reverse its progress. Considering your obligation to your patient, the values of the parents and standards of best medical practices how would you respond to this situation?
B. One of your elderly patients has been hospitalized for the third time following a catastrophic stroke. Paralyzed, unable to speak but able to respond "yes" or "no" with eye blinks. His signed advanced directives specify that should the continuation of therapeutic treatment be determined to be futile, that aggressive treatment would be judged inappropriate and his care would be "palliative". The patient's family insists that their loved one is "aware" and that therapeutic treatment should continue.
What action do you take when confronted with this situation?

Question IV - (only reapplicants must answer this question)
What academic, employment, volunteer experiences have you been engaged in since your last application to medical school? How does your current application differ from your previous application?

Question V - (only applicants with an institutional action must answer this question)
Fully describe the circumstances that resulted in the disciplinary institutional action citation noted on your AMCAS application. What "lasting" lessons have you learned from the experience?

Question VI- (MD/MPH applicants must answer this question)
Please explain your specific interest in Public Health. Include any relevant experiences and/or education.

Length is 250-500 words (1500 to 3000 characters).

In this case it wasn't. It was buried a bit.
