2014-2015 Wayne State University Application Thread

Hey everyone
I've been struggling to find a place within my budget of $5-600 a month including utilities. I was initially looking for a 1 bedroom in Midtown but haven't found any vacancies. Now, I'm exploring roommate options. Does anyone know of someone who already has a 2 or 3 bedroom place looking for an extra roommate? I'm in Detroit today (originally from Canada) so it'd be awesome to meet up with anyone who is looking for a roommate today. I know there's a roommate spreadsheet by wsu and I've been using it but I need more options as I don't think many post on it. Thanks in advance! 🙂

Have you tried making a post in the facebook group?

So I don't know how this will go over with you but I heavily recommend getting facebook if only for the express reason of communicating with classmates. I shut down my main account for over a year and a half and still kept a secret one so I could be part of the class communication, which was really helpful throughout the year for communicating about required things, passing along study guides, etc.

There are a lot of people looking for roommates and stuff right now and the facebook is where most of the communication is going to go down. Midtown rents and availabilities were one of the most shocking things about moving to Detroit. If you have a car I would recommend looking into other areas like Hamtramck, Grosse Pointe, Royal Oak, as those would be places that would fit the 600 a month including utilities price range. If I hear of anyone looking for a roommate I will send you a private message.

Don't have fb lol

You make a good point. I've already felt the impact of not having fb and I haven't even started classes...anyone mind sending me the fb page for the class of 2019? Thanks in advance!

Can you expand on this a little more? Midtown sounded the most appealing to me so that doesn't sound like good news.

The occupancy rate is fairly high, so there are already waiting lists for most of the nicer buildings. Rents are probably high relative to the greater detroit area but in my experience, comparable or less than other major US cities I've lived in. No need to lose hope though as there are quite a few students (m1's and upperclassmen) who already have two or 3 br spots and are looking for roommates. You should definitely be watching the FB page, and also sign up on the roommate finder spreadsheet and proactively contact the people who have listed available rooms. The spreadsheet exists for a purpose. I'm an incoming M1 and this is how I found a roommate/spot in Midtown.

Thanks, appreciate the info.

I'm looking at the M1 December 2015 calendar now since I'm trying to make travel arrangements around that time - does anyone know if there will be anything on December 21st? It looks like there's nothing listed that day as of now (https://www.google.com/calendar/emb...roup.calendar.google.com&ctz=America/New_York), but the official start of winter break is listed as 12-22. Is it safe to assume that there won't be anything on 12-21? Thanks.

That's the way it has been in years past, but no guarantee they don't switch it up

Thanks @dr.0ne and @joker2400

I looked at the calendar again and 12-21 now has "winter break" under it, so I guess we are off that day.

Just withdrew. I was really looking forward to starting classes at WSU and meeting all the entering students, and I've had it in my head for the past month or so that this is the school I would be attending. Sending that email was tough to do. I got off the waitlist at another great school, and they made me a really strong offer. I'm sure my spot at Wayne State will go to someone deserving -- hopefully one of you guys on SDN.

hey guys!
i am debating to live either in studio or union at midtown(more inclined). I wanted to know if someone can comment on the safety of cass ave. Also, I understand that the parking facility for the union is 5-7 mins away on foot. How safe would that walk be during the day and night?

Just got in off the wait list. Looking forward to a stressful, bloody, coffee-filled 4 years with you all

It's a city so use all general city precautions (that you would use anywhere). But Cass Avenue in the vicinity of campus has always felt safe to me. I moved from a much more dangerous neighborhood on the east coast and generally have always felt fine walking at night, even by myself (I'm female, but have always lived in cities). It depends on your general comfort and street sense, however.

So for the post bacc program, how many people get into that? And what percentage actually make it into medical school after?
